A magnitude 4.6 earthquake shook Seattle and the Puget Sound region just before 3 a.m. Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey. “It’s been widely felt throughout the Seattle area,” said Paul Caruso, a USGS geophysicist. The shaking emanated from Three Lakes, Snohomish County, about nine miles east of downtown Everett. The earthquake was relatively shallow, originating about 14 miles beneath the surface, according to a USGS map. At most, the earthquake lasted a “couple seconds,” said Joan Gomberg, a USGS seismologist and affiliate faculty member at the University of Washington, though shaking can feel longer “because some houses reverberate a little bit.” There were no immediate reports of damage in Snohomish County, according to a tweet from the Sheriff’s Office. Police in nearby Lake Stevens reported no damage to city infrastructure. The Washington State Department of Transportation said in a tweet that the agency would be inspecting bridgesFriday morning, but had no reports of damage.

Amazon Will Pay a Whopping $0 in Federal Taxes on $11.2 Billion Profits
Those wondering how many zeros Amazon, which is valued at nearly $800 billion, has to pay in federal taxes might be surprised to learn that its check to the IRS will read exactly $0.00. According to a report published by the Institute on Taxation and Economic (ITEP) policy Wednesday, the e-tail/retail/tech/entertainment/everything giant won’t have to pay a cent in federal taxes for the second year in a row. This tax-free break comes even though Amazon almost doubled its U.S. profits from $5.6 billion to $11.2 billion between 2017 and 2018. To top it off, Amazon actually reported a $129 million 2018 federal income tax rebate—making its tax rate -1%. Amazon’s low (to non-existent) tax rate has been chided by politicians ranging from Senator Bernie Sanders to President Donald Trump.
But even though Trump previously blasted Amazon for its limited state taxes—a single presidential tweet caused the company’s shares to fall by 9%—ITEP notes that its non-existent federal tax payment is a result of the Trump Administration’s corporation-friendly tax cuts. The think tank writes that the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act not only decreased corporate tax rates from 35% to 21%, but it also didn’t close “a slew of tax loopholes that allow profitable companies to routinely avoid paying federal and state income taxes on almost half of their profits.” According to The Week, Amazon ended up paying an 11.4% federal income tax rate between 2011 and 2016, which is a contrast to the -1% rate this year. Amazon has a history of avoiding various sales taxes and made headlines last summer after successfully convincing Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan to repeal a taxthat would have helped the city’s homeless population.
Furthermore, New Yorkers made waves after learning about the significant tax cuts Amazon would receive if it built a headquarters in Long Island City.

FRANCE: ALGERIAN FOOTBALL FANS RIOT, WIELD CHAINSAWS, LOOT STORES
Algerian football fans in Paris, Marseille, Lyon and other cities celebrated their soccer team’s Africa Cup of Nations win by rioting, looting stores and wielding chainsaws in a night of chaos.
Police were deployed to the center of Paris to keep order as vandals threw fireworks. One video even shows a man wielding a chainsaw. The fans shouted “Allahu Akbar!,” “Nique la France” (Fuck France) and “on va baiser des keufs” (We are going to fuck the cops) as they attacked store fronts. “Tensions started boiling by around 11pm with at least one Molotov cocktail thrown at police lines. Riot forces responded with tear gas and rubber bullets to stop the crowd from vandalizing cars and looting shops,” reports RT. Similar disturbances were also reported in Marseille, Lyon, Valence and other French cities. As we previously reported, during last year’s World Cup, a woman and her partner were viciously beaten in Paris by a group of Algerian men the sin of shouting “Vive la France!” French cities were also besieged by anarchists and migrants after the World Cup final, with shops being looted, vehicles set alight and buildings torched.

Move Over Therapy Dogs. Hello, Therapy Cows.
Even without a psychology degree, Bella’s natural talents made her an excellent therapist: She is calm and accommodating of a range of personalities, with the patience to listen to endless problems without so much as a judgmental moo. From a lush, secluded pasture on the Mountain Horse Farm, a 33-acre bed-and-breakfast in the Finger Lakes region of New York, 3-year-old Bella and 2-year-old Bonnie are the highlander-angus crossbred cows that provide animal-based therapy. Cow cuddling, as the practice is called, invites interaction with the farm animals via brushing, petting or heartfelt chats with the bovines. The experience is similar to equine therapy, with one game-changing difference: Horses tend to stand, but cows spontaneously lie down in the grass while chewing their cud, allowing humans to get even more up close and personal by joining on the ground and offering a warm embrace. As more people are turning to a variety of animals — dogs, ducks, alligators — for their mental health, states are cracking down on how and when therapy animals can be used. But cows? You can’t take them with you.

“Can you see how quiet she gets?” said Suzanne Vullers, 51, an accountant turned equine therapist who co-owns the bed-and-breakfast with her husband, Rudi Vullers, also 51. “That’s what we’re looking for,” she said. “For the person and the cow.”Hailing from the rural town of Reuver, in the Netherlands, the pair came across “koe knuffelen,” which means “cow hugging” in Dutch, on a return visit to their homeland two years ago. In parts of the Netherlands, cow cuddling is offered as part of half-day visits, and is part of an larger movement to connect people with country life. In the major urban center of Rotterdam, a newly opened floating dairy farm in the city’s oldest port invites city dwellers to visit the beasts. About a decade earlier, in 2007, Mr. and Ms. Vullers — he a former supply chain manager, she a former accountant — traded their corporate lives to set up their farming shop in Naples, N.Y. (Population: 2,500. Claim to fame: a grape festival that takes place in the fall, with a competition for grape pie.) The idea of cow cuddling opened the barn gates. In May of 2018, they purchased Bonnie and Bella, selecting them for their gentle personalities and lack of horns. “A lot of cows are not suited for it,” Mr. Vullers said. ”They can chase you out of the field.”

Leaves Of Grass: Views Of Greenery From Home, Work Help Reduce Harmful Cravings
So much of modern life happens indoors. From offices to apartments or homes, most people in today’s day and age find themselves cooped up inside for most of the day. Spending more time outdoors has long been linked to a more positive mindset, but now a study has concluded that just seeing greenery on a day-to-day basis can put us in a better mindset and reduce harmful cravings for substances such as alcohol, cigarettes, and junk food.
According to the study out of the University of Plymouth, being able to see greenery and nature from your home will lead to less frequent, and intense cravings. The research builds off of previous work that has established a link between exercising outdoors and reduced cravings, but the study’s authors assert that exercise isn’t necessary to reap the benefits of nature.
“It has been known for some time that being outdoors in nature is linked to a person’s wellbeing. But for there to be a similar association with cravings from simply being able to see green spaces adds a new dimension to previous research. This is the first study to explore this idea, and it could have a range of implications for both public health and environmental protection programmes in the future,” explains lead researcher Leanne Martin in a release.
Participants in the study filled out an online survey that asked questions about their daily exposure to nature, usual cravings, and how often they experience negative emotions. Regarding nature, the survey measured participants’ exposure to greenery in their own neighborhoods, the amount of foliage visible from their homes, access to a garden, and how often they frequent public parks.
The results indicated that daily access to a garden or other green spaces lowered the frequency and occurrence of harmful cravings. Additionally, the ability to view nature from one’s home caused similar results. Researchers also took exercise into account in the surveys, but they found that participants reported less cravings after seeing nature regardless of whether they exercised or not.

Your vegetable garden’s early summer to-do list | The Star
Early riches. The “early croppers” are ready for harvest — start looking for shorter season zucchinis before they get too big and spoil in the field. The first kale, Swiss chard, carrots, peas, and radishes you planted should also be nearing harvest. Staying ahead of this onslaught will prevent woody radishes and maximize the bounty of leafy greens.
Last chances. Take whatever leftover lettuce, mesclun, radish, broccoli (all “cold” crops), carrots, onions and pea seed you have left over and plant them. This is not a Hail Mary as you are certain to get a great fall harvest from these cool-season crops.
A great e-scape. Garlic scapes are ready for harvest — go out there and get them! Many gardeners do not realize the pigtail atop their garlic plants is delicious and valued. They sell for about a dollar each at farmers’ markets. Cut them off and toss them in a salad or grill them on the barbecue. Truth is, every part of the garlic plant is edible.
A thorny treasure. Sweet, delicious raspberries are maturing behind the guarded veil of their thorny branches. A good pair of rose-pruning gloves with leather gauntlet are perfect for reaching in for the harvest or go barefisted if you’re brave.
Alas, the locusts. And other insects or disease. Protect your fruit trees by applying Green Earth insecticidal soap and garden sulphur. Mark applies both at the same time in his orchard to protect his crop through to harvest.

Researchers Find That Gardening Soil Is A Natural Antidepressant | Spirit Science
Gardening enthusiasts adamantly tout the long list of benefits include stress reduction and mood improvement. But, why stop there? Could tending to a garden, breathing in fresh air and exposure to Vitamin D sunshine rays help those suffering with depression? The votes are in and experts say “yes.”
The answer lies in the actual antidepressant microorganisms in the soil.
Antidepressant Microbes in the Soil
Mycobacterium vaccae (M. vaccae) in dirt and soil naturally activate the release of serotonin and dopamine in the brain.
Together, these neurotransmitters send chemical messages to the brain: dopamine affects your emotions via sensations of pleasure and pain, while serotonin regulates our mood, social behavior, libido, memory and sleep.
When gardening, these microorganisms absorb into your skin and are inhaled with each breath. Upon entering your bloodstream and respiratory system, they quickly get to work – boosting your mood and subsiding your pain.
According to O’Brien, not only did the vaccae microbial bacteria improve their immune system, but patients also demonstrated a sizeable boost in their happiness, vitality and pain relief.
Study: Soil Organisms and Performed Behaviour
According to a study conducted by neuroscientists Dorothy Matthews and Susan Jenks, published in the Behavioural Processes Journal, “eating, touching and breathing a soil organism may be tied to the development of our immune system and nervous system.”
The research was conducted on mice, administered M. vaccae and put through a series of behavioral tests. Not only were the mice less anxious, but they also demonstrated boosted cognitive functioning – navigating a maze twice as fast as their placebo counterparts who weren’t administered any microorganism.
According to Matthews, these findings lay the foundation for human adolescent schooling practices, “it is interesting to speculate that creating learning environments in schools that include time outdoors where M. vaccae is present may decrease anxiety and improve the ability to learn new tasks.”
Professor Graham Rook at the University College London has weighed in on the issue. Rook points to the gastrointestinal tract, the home to a hundred trillion microbes at any given time.
These bacteria are a product of both genetics and lifestyle, interacting with our entire body, from our lungs to our gut. Deficiencies in microbial exposure, Rook argues, is the link between the rise in chronic health problems, including both autoimmunity deficiencies and depression.
This brain-gut connection proves to be the bridge between gardening and mental health.
Get Dirty: Gardening for your Brain
The long-held benefits of gardening, as proven here, are true. Not only is gardening an exceptional activity to incorporate into your daily routine, but the release of happy neurotransmitters are undeniable.
From the soil brain-boosting benefits to the grounding effects of nature, getting down and dirty by tending to a garden proves to be a worthy investment in your mental wellbeing.
What are you waiting for? Start a garden, get outside, enjoy nature and get dirty.

Bank of England warns of lending crisis for EU firms after no-deal Brexit | Business | The Guardian
The Bank of England has sounded the alarm over the risks to City banks from no-deal Brexit, warning that companies across Europe could be cut off from their lenders overnight.
Threadneedle Street said the City of London was well prepared to withstand the shock of Britain crashing out without a deal at the end of October without banks failing as they did in the financial crisis. However, there would still be major disruption for companies.
Publishing its twice yearly financial stability report, the central bank said progress had been made to ready UK and European banks, as well as international lenders based in London, for a no-deal scenario.
However, it warned that about half of EU companies using banks registered in Britain could be cut off from their banking services after Halloween, as they had yet to fully prepare for Brexit.
“In the absence of further action by EU authorities, some disruption to cross-border financial services is possible. Although such disruption would primarily affect EU households and businesses, it could amplify volatility and spill back to the UK in ways that cannot be fully anticipated or mitigated,” the Bank said.
Britain has enabled UK companies banking with EU banks located in Britain to keep on trading in the same way, even in a no-deal Brexit, under special rules legislated for by the government. Brussels has however not taken similar steps, the Bank warned.
Assessing the ability of the City to withstand the shock of leaving the EU without a transition period from the end of October, the central bank said all of the UK’s biggest banks could continue trading without risk of collapse, unlike the financial crisis a decade ago.
The Bank also said they could withstand a simultaneous international trade war, amid heightened tensions between the US and China.
Threadneedle Street also revealed fresh details of its plans to stress test banks for climate-linked financial risks as part of its annual health check of the banking system planned for 2021.
It said it would look at the risks facing UK banks from a world of rising temperatures with mounting natural disasters, as well as a separate scenario where governments introduce new rules to limit the burning of fossil fuels. It said it would publish further details later this year about the stress test.

Ocasio-Cortez Suggests Pelosi Is Targeting Her Because Pelosi Is Racist | Daily Wire
Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during multiple recent interviews, going as far as to say that she believes that Pelosi is targeting her because Pelosi is racist.
“I think sometimes people think that we have a relationship,” Ocasio-Cortez told The New Yorker Radio Hour. “Not particularly.”
“The last time I kind of spoke to her one on one was when she asked me to join the Select Committee on Climate Change,” Ocasio-Cortez continued. “I was assigned to some of the busiest committees and four subcommittees. So my hands are full. And sometimes I wonder if they’re trying to keep me busy.”
Ocasio-Cortez suggested to The Washington Post on Wednesday that Pelosi was a racist: “When these comments first started, I kind of thought that she was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arm’s distance in order to protect more moderate members, which I understood. But the persistent singling out . . . it got to a point where it was just outright disrespectful . . . the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color.”
Pelosi has repeatedly mocked Ocasio-Cortez and the other three far-left freshmen House Democrats, recently telling The New York Times: “All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world. But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.”
Pelosi echoed a similar statement in April, saying: “While there are people who have a large number of Twitter followers, what’s important is that we have large numbers of votes on the floor of the House.”
Pelosi also mocked Ocasio-Cortez in an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” in April, while dismissing the far-left wing of the party.
“So you are contending with a group in Congress: Over here on the left flank are these self-described socialists, on the right, these moderates,” host Lesley Stahl said. “And you yourself said that you’re the only one who can unify everybody. And the question is, can you?”
“By and large, whatever orientation they came to Congress with, they know that we have to hold the center,” Pelosi responded. “That we have to go down the mainstream.”
“You have these wings — AOC, and her group on one side —” Lesley responded.
“That’s like five people,” Pelosi fired back.

Scientific Breakthrough: Octopus DNA Is Not From This World | Spirit Science
According to a new breakthrough study, the Octopuses DNA is not of this world! That is right, their genome is far more complex than a human and contains around 33,000 protein-coding genes! This never before seen Alien DNA is nothing like anything else we have studied here on earth.
The Oceans are full of mysteries that we are still unlocking every year as marine biologists are able to go deeper and study with better technologies. Recently a group of researchers decided to look into the DNA codes around the cephalopods in order to better understand them.

This classification covers various mollusks such as the squid, cuttlefish and of course the octopus. Scientists believe that their evolution goes back at least 500 million years which means they would even predate land plant species! The Octopus species are so versatile that they are at every depth and in every corner of the ocean.
They have some incredibly advanced biotechnology on them especially when you think about their sophisticated chameleonic skin color changing response, camera-like eyes, and extremely flexible bodies. Considering these are all invertebrates, they have a very large nervous systems as well.
These highly developed brains are considered to be extremely intelligent and they have been able to prove their skills by solving complex puzzles. Just check out this video of an octopus opening up a jar!
This revolutionary new DNA sequencing was able to show that the Octopus is unlike any other creature on this planet. This never-before-seen complexity was more complex than the human genome and a very exciting discovery for marine biologists worldwide.
Dr. Clifton Ragsdale from the University of Chicago, U.S. said:
“The octopus appears to be utterly different from all other animals, even other molluscs, with its eight prehensile arms, its large brain, and its clever problem-solving abilities.
The late British zoologist Martin Wells said the octopus is an alien. In this sense, then, our paper describes the first sequenced genome from an alien.”
One of the reasons why biologists wanted to study the octopus to such great lengths is because they seem to naturally be able to adapt and solve very complex problems. The Octopus’s ability to learn and remember baffled scientists which led to a DNA sequencing test.
This new genome may help explain why they are able to rapidly change colors and even communicate with the color of their skin.
The scientists also found that the genome is full of transposons which are also known as “Jumping Genes”. These genes rearrange themselves within the genome. Though the scientists aren’t sure what these highly advanced genes do, there is something really alien going on inside the neurons of the Octopus.
Imagine your body being full of stem cells that could rapidly change based on what you needed from moment to moment. This would be an incredibly advanced biology that could make a huge difference in our ability to adapt to changes in the environment and survive extreme conditions.
“With a few notable exceptions, the octopus basically has a typical invertebrate genome that’s just been completely rearranged, like it’s been put into a blender and mixed,” said Caroline Albertin, graduate student in Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the University of Chicago. “This leads to genes being placed in new genomic environments with different regulatory elements, and was an entirely unexpected finding.” (Source)
The scientific report concludes that Octopuses have ‘Alien’ genes that are both shocking and intriguing the marine biologist community.
It may be time to look deeper in our own oceans and see what other Alien mysteries are buried in the depths.
