    According to the leading researcher at Oxford University, Dr. Paul Kelley, waking up for work before 10 AM is the most common form of torture we’re experiencing daily.

    The internal body clock or The Circadian Rhythm is the biological timers that mandate our bodily functions and the pre-programmed genetic cycle controls our perception of time, energy levels, brain functions, and hormone production.

    Because of that, waking up before 10 o’clock is a way of torture to our body and affects the natural balance in the body negatively.

    In his research, Kelley shows that people are not able to change their 24-hour rhythms and one cannot learn to wake up at a certain time. The heart and the liver have different patterns and they are supposed to shift between two and three hours.

    During the early 20th century, when the working day of 8-hours was introduced together with the 24/7 factory productivity, no one thought about the natural human body clock.

    Consequently, Dr. Paul Kelley shows that this can affect the emotional, physical, and performance systems which can damage our body. All of the workers should be starting at 10 AM. Additionally, he says that people have chronic sleep deprivation which is a worldwide issue.

    Furthermore, one week with less than 6 hours of sleep during the night will lead to 711 different changes to the function of our genes.

    Dr. Kelley thinks that effectiveness in the workplace should be improved if the simple changes of the starting time and ending time would be implemented.

    Many neuroscientists alongside with Dr. Kelly show the importance of knowing the functionality of the body at different ages, specifically for the sleep cycles. Sleep deprivation can start when we’re in the ages of adolescence since teens are predisposed biologically to sleep sometime around midnight. Thus, the teens are not exactly awake until 10 AM in the morning, but because of their early morning schedule with schools, the teens lose about 10 hours of sleep during a week. Additionally, they have a habit to stay awake longer in the night during weekends so the constant readjusting to going to bed early and waking up early cycle which is designed for a 55-year old.

    A British school listened to Dr. Kelley’s theory and implemented it in their school system. They started school at 10.00 AM instead of 8.30 AM After some time, many of the students showed significant results since their grades increased as well as their general productivity and attendance.

    Because of this, if we choose to implement these changes in all sectors of our society, many people will become happier, more productive, healthy, and filled with joy and energy instead of being stressed, fatigued, and very addicted to coffee.

    Navy SEALs Use This 7-Step Process to Achieve Any Goal. You Can Too

    When most of us civilians hear about Navy SEAL’s capturing terrorists or pulling off hair-raising rescue missions, we stand in awe of their toughness. But according to Rob Roy, a 25-year veteran of the SEALs and author of The Navy SEAL Art of War, being a SEAL “is not about being the toughest guy. It’s about being the smartest guy.”

    In a recent Big Think video, Roy explains that while SEALs are clearly incredible warriors, they rely on careful planning and battle-tested approaches to leadership, as much as sheer strength and bravery. Accomplishing jaw-dropping things, Roy explains, is less about innate grit than you probably think, and more about process. Roy lays out the seven-step approach SEALs use to tackle even the most daunting missions, so you can adapt it to achieve your own biggest, scariest goals.

    1. Ask clarifying questions.

    Clearly, in military situations it’s essential to be clear about your objective, both so you don’t capture the wrong guy and know what winning looks like. But in civilian life, too, it’s impossible to achieve success if you don’t define it first. SEALs ask, “Exactly what do you want me to do? Who, what, when, where, how?” Roy notes. Adapt and answer this sort of question for your own context ,and you’ve taken taken the first step to reaching your goal.

    2. Identify all your resources.

    The next step is to marshal all your resources and see what you have to work with to achieve your aim. That means not only material resources like money and technology, but also intangible ones like your network and skills.

    3. Clarify roles and responsibilities.

    Before SEALs go into any mission, they make sure each person knows their role, from machine gunner to medic, what each must accomplish, and when. The roles in your team are unlikely to involve automatic weapons or morphine, but nonetheless, it’s essential to make sure everyone understands their area of responsibility and how it fits into the larger mission.

    4. Focus relentlessly on your goal.

    As Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has explained, all good leaders take responsibility for outcomes, whatever the circumstances. For true leaders, there is no such thing as an excuse, because they always keep their focus on the goal and look for ways around each constraint.

    Roy explains, “In the SEAL teams, what we’ll do is we’ll say, ‘Hey, we’re going to get Bin Laden.’ And one of the first questions they always ask is, ‘How many people do you think you can do the mission with if the helo crashes?’” In short, never let circumstances turn into excuses.

    5. Think through all possible contingencies.

    In practice, this means letting your pessimistic imagination run wild to dream up every hiccup and holdup you might face. How can you work around these possibilities? “There’s a car accident? OK, I’m going to walk. Well, the roads are blocked. OK, so how do I get around there?” Roy offers as an example. “You need to constantly think about what’s the next thing to do in that situation, because again, at the end of the day, you have to be able to accomplish your mission.”

    6. Train until you’re stress-proof.

    OK, you know your aim, you’ve assigned your roles, and you’ve talked through everything that could go wrong. Your planning is ace, but there’s another essential step to making  sure your paper plan actually translates to real life. This is the step where many of us fall down. There is no great accomplishment without day in, day out effort and training. One, because that’s how you build skills and a body of work. But also because steady practice is how you teach yourself to handle the stress of struggling for any audacious goal.

    “When you’re a SEAL, you train a lot, you train a lot. You do everything repetitively over and over and over again, because you want muscle memory,” Roy explains. “The more you know about what you’re doing, the more frequently you train for the mistakes and the problems and the hiccups, the more you’re able to do a lot more in a shorter period of time without much effort.”

    7. After-action review.

    Reached your goal? Congrats, but there’s still one final step left to go. “You do yourself and the people in the room or the people in the organization a disservice if you don’t debrief what happened or where the mistakes are at,” Roy concludes. This isn’t about assigning blame to people. It’s about figuring out what went wrong so you can do better next time.

    Gonorrhoea diagnoses in England have risen to their highest level for 40 years and jumped 26 per cent since 2017, sparking warnings from health chiefs about the threat from drug resistant strains. Public Health England figures show there were 447,694 sexually transmitted infections diagnosed in 2018, a rise of 5 per cent in a year. The biggest increase was in gonorrhoea where there were 56,259 cases diagnosed, 14,000 more than in 2017. Experts warned about the UK’s first case of “super-gonorrhoea” a year ago, although the man was eventually cured it required extensive treatment with a cocktail of drugs usually held in reserve for the most serious infection. “This is of concern given the three cases of extensively drug resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae identified in England in 2018,” PHE warned. The number of gonorrhoea diagnosis in 2018 was the largest annual number reported since 1978, since 2009, gonorrhoea diagnoses have risen by 249 per cent (from 16,141 to 56,259), mostly due to increases among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (referred to collectively as ‘MSM’).” Sexual health groups have warned about the damaging impact of repeated government cuts to sexual health programmes.  Testing fell again, by 1 per cent, last year but the number of chlamydia cases rose by 2 per cent since 2017, with roughly one in 10 tests resulting in a positive diagnosis, 131,000 infections in all.

    Syphilis and herpes cases also continued to rise, jumping 5 per cent and 3 per cent respectively. “The continuing escalation in gonorrhoea and syphilis diagnoses must be addressed as an urgent health priority, otherwise there is the potential for devastating consequences to the wellbeing of the wider population and the health system as a whole,” said Dr Olwen Williams, president of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV. “The workforce issues currently being experienced have left the sector at breaking point.” Cases of genital warts fell by 3 per cent, to 57,318, and halved in 15-17-year-olds, because of the routine vaccination of school age girls against the human papillomavirus (HPV). Dr Gwenda Hughes, head of STI surveillance at PHE, said: “The rise in sexually transmitted infections is concerning. STIs can pose serious consequences to health – both your own and that of current and future sexual partners. “No matter what age you are, or what type of relationship you are in, it’s important to look after your sexual health. If you have sex with a new or casual partner, make sure you use condoms and get regularly tested.”

    The Sunday shark attack off North Carolina that cost a teenager her leg ended when the girl’s father “punched the shark in the face,” according to Janet Winter, identified as the girl’s grandmother.  Paige Winter, 17, of Havelock was attacked by a shark while standing in waist-deep water off Fort Macon, as her father stood nearby, according to a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $23,000.  The father, Charlie Winter, is a firefighter and paramedic with the City of Havelock Fire and Rescue and served in the Marines, according to the campaign.  Paige Winter lost part of one leg above the knee and some fingers, Janet Winter posted on her Facebook page. “Charlie wouldn’t stop until it released his little girl,” Bersch told the show. “He lives for his children.” Winter’s instinct to punch the shark was actually a brilliant move, experts say.

    “If… a shark bites you, what we recommend is you should hit the shark in the eye, in the nose, or stick your hand in the gills,” according to a video from Chris Lowe, Director of California State University Long Beach Shark Lab. “Those are all sensitive tissues and quite often it causes the shark to release. Family members say Paige Winter will likely need multiple surgeries and possibly a hand transplant. Marcy Goodrum Winter, the teen’s mother, posted on Facebook that her daughter was “groggy but cracking jokes” after her first surgery on Sunday. “She wants everyone to know that sharks are still good people,” her mom was quoted saying on the GoFundMe page. Paige Winter is a junior at New Bern High School in eastern North Carolina, according to the school’s Facebook page. New Bern is about 120 miles southeast of Raleigh. Charlie Winter’s fearless attack on the shark has won him praise across the country, particularly from news outlets that cover the U.S. Marines. “Who needs a bigger boat when you have a Marine’s fists?” wrote TaskandPurpose.com. The “horrific shark attack” occurred about 12:20 p.m. Sunday off Fort Macon State Park at Atlantic Beach, according to the GoFundMe page. Paige Winter was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where she was listed in good condition after surgery, according to the GoFundMe page.

    “Her family expresses their appreciation for the first responders, the individuals on the beach who helped and her heroic father who saved her life,” the page says. “Despite this unfortunate circumstance, Paige is an unwavering advocate for the marine life and the animals.”

    Israeli study authored by Dr. Michel Balaish, Director of the Veterinary Institute at the Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development, has discovered that the blood pressure of children who were raised with a dog in the house were lower than children who were raised without one, according to Israeli media.  It is widely known that having an animal in the house can greatly reduce stress and anxiety among pet owners and can even lead to a longer life. In fact, some doctors even prescribe therapy dogs or recommend that a patient adopt an animal if their anxiety or depression is severe enough, as opposed to normal medications. Although it has been discovered in past studies that introducing a dog into a room will immediately reduce the blood pressure of a young child, there have been no studies conducted that have determined if children growing up with a dog in the house do in fact have lower blood pressure, according to Israel Hayom.
    The observational clinical trial had a sample size of 229 children, ages six to nine, chosen from two different schools in the Shoham area, just southeast of Tel Aviv. The children’s blood pressure were checked at three different times throughout the day – during class, during relaxation and during times of stress (such as reading an excerpt from a text to the class). The process was tracked through questionnaires and daily diaries the parents of the children kept throughout the process.

    The blood pressure of children who raised a dog had an average measurement of 4.5mm Hg during times of stress, whereas the rate dropped as expected during times of relaxation, the difference was not significant to the findings. “The study shows that raising a dog at home is associated with low blood pressure during stressful situations in children and that owning a dog has added health value,” Dr. Blaish explained. In a related development, UK-based researchers found in that by combining information from different senses dogs form abstract mental representations of positive and negative emotional states in people. “Our dog Bamba gives me a sense of security and good feeling. I feel really happy with her and when I’m sad she comforts me. It’s fun to play and hug her. Sometimes, when I have nothing to do, I just lie with her. I have never lived without a dog in the family and I can not imagine my life any differently,” said eight-year-old dog-owner Yaara. Yaara’s statement can be confirmed by previous studies in the past that have shown that dogs can differentiate between human emotions from signs such as facial expressions. However, this is not the same as emotional recognition, according to Dr Kun Guo, from the University of Lincoln’s School of Psychology.

    “This is the first empirical experiment that will show dogs can integrate visual and oratory inputs to understand or differentiate human emotion as dog emotion,” Kun told Reuters. Experiments were carried out by a team of animal behavior experts and psychologists at the University of Lincoln, UK, and University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.  They presented 17 untrained domestic dogs with images and sounds conveying either positive or negative emotional expressions in humans and dogs. The dogs used in the testing were unfamiliar with the procedure; avoiding any chance of conditioning. The vocalization sound accompanying the human faces was also unfamiliar. “We used Portuguese to British dogs so they weren’t habituated with any words, they weren’t familiar with any words. So, we wanted to see if the dogs could assess the emotional content of the human voices and whether they would actually discriminate the emotional information within them,” explained Natalia De Souza Albuquerque, a PhD student in experimental psychology. The results, published recently in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters, found that dogs spent significantly longer looking at the facial expressions which matched the emotional state of the vocalization, for both human and canine subjects. “What we found is that when dogs were hearing positive sounds they would look longer to positive faces, both human and dog. And when they were listening to negative sounds they would look longer to negative, angry faces,” added De Souza Albuquerque. The study shows that dogs can integrate two different sources of sensory information into a perception of emotion in both humans and dogs. This means dogs must have a system of internal categorization of emotional states. Among animal groups, it’s a cognitive ability previously only evidenced in primates.

    Is Vermin Infestation Making People Sick At Downtown LAPD Station?

    An infestation of vermin at a building in Downtown Los Angeles is allegedly making people sick.  CBS2’KCAL9’s Sara Donchey reports that the people getting sick are work at one of LAPD’s stations. LAPD’s Central Division is in the heart of Skid Row.  It appears the troubled areas problems are, in this case, stemming from inside the building. The LAPD says an employee at that station contracted salmonella typhi, which typically comes from infected food or water. A second employee is believed to have now contracted the same thing. CBS2/KCAL9 has obtained an OSHA report citing the LAPD for an unclean work area. The report cited, among other things, “the presence of rats/rodents, fleas, roaches, flies gnats, mosquitoes and grasshoppers” at the LAPD Central Community Police Station. This isn’t the first time rats have infested a city building. Earlier this year, a city attorney contracted typhus at LA City Hall. The LA Police Protective League issued a statement Wednesday evening. It read in part, “Officers worry enough about being shot or injured policing the streets of Los Angeles. They shouldn’t also have to worry about being infected with diseases they can take home to their families simply by showing up to work.” The strong statement also called for the immediate clean-up of these buildings.

The WHO designation excludes those who have been diagnosed with anxiety, mood disorders, and other stress-related medical conditions. The WHO’s revision of the International Classification of Diseases defines burnout as a syndrome “resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.”

    The health guidelines characterize burnout as:

    1. Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion
    2. Increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job
    3. Reduced professional efficacy

    The Centers for Disease Control gives several suggestions to those dealing with chronic workplace stress. The CDC encourages people to find:

    1. Balance between work and family or personal life
    2. A support network of friends and coworkers
    3. A relaxed and positive outlook

    It’s about time that naps were taken more seriously.

    It’s no lie that in a modern society, many of us are sleep deprived, so much so that power naps may actually be of benefit to us all.

    Napping could so effective that it may help boost our brains, improving problem solving, verbal memory, perceptual learning, object learning and statistical learning. This in turn will improve our reaction time, help with math, logical reasoning, treat fatigue and of course, improve our moods.

    The benefits don’t end there – this aids to alleviate stress, assists in weight management, better heart health and lowers blood pressure.

    Based on the National Sleep Foundation, naps can be put into three different categories:

    — Planned napping (also known as preparatory napping) involves taking a nap before one actually gets sleepy. This technique can be used to prevent tiredness and fatigue, or when one knows that he will be up later than the normal bed time

    — Emergency napping occurs when one suddenly feels very tired and cannot go on with the activity he was engaged in at that time. This nap type often helps to treat drowsy driving or fatigue while using heavy and dangerous machinery.

    — Habitual napping is a routine practiced when a person takes a nap at the same time each day. Young children usually fall asleep at about the same time every afternoon, or adults take a short name every day after lunch.

    A Greek study found that adult men who napped 3 times a week were 37% less likely to die from heart related illness compared to others who didn’t nap.

    Many countries customarily nap too. Think of the famous siesta in Spain. The USA and UK likewise are not very supportive of napping in the afternoons and both countries suffer the most heart attacks worldwide as the leading cause of death.

    Not only do naps improve mental function, they also provide physiological benefits, boosting rejuvenation.

    In 1995, NASA came forth with a groundbreaking study in which they evaluated the effects of 747 pilots taking naps, allowed 40 min a day. The findings revealed vigilance performance improvements from 16% in median reaction time to 34% in lapses compared to the No-Rest Group.

    In 2008, studies showed that naps actually work better than caffeine when it comes to improving mental functioning.

    A short nap has many benefits, the length will determine the benefits you’ll experience:

    20 Minute Nap – It enhances memory, mental alertness, and motor learning skills.

    20 To 30 Minute Nap – It boosts creativity and boosts memory.

    30 To 60 Minute Nap – It enhances decision-making skills and memory

    60 To 90 Minute Nap – It ensures REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, so it is the most beneficial nap type. It helps you reset the brain, and has a dramatic effect on the problem-solving skills.

    Therefore, we could all definitely benefit from a nap during the day, unless you suffer from a sleeping disorder – you may find that napping could hinder your already trying sleeping pattern.
