5 Fascinating Studies That Prove the Physical and Mental Health Benefits of Spending Time in Nature

    BY SOFO ARCHON

All human beings love being close to nature and respond to it, whether they consciously feel connected to it or not.

Psychoanalyst Erich Fromm coined the term biophilia in 1973 to describe this phenomenon, which was later expanded by Harvard biologist E. O. Wilson in his effort to describe the connections people unconsciously seek with the natural world.

Over the past decades, numerous studies have shown that people have an inherent connection with the natural world, by proving the amazing physical and mental health benefits of spending time in nature. Below are five fascinating findings from such studies, all pointing to how healing nature could be, if only we chose to spend more time in it:

    1. The cognitive functioning of children was enhanced when a park or greenery could be seen from their home. [1]

    2. Workers in rooms with windows tend to have a better overall health, feel less frustration and have more patience, as well as enjoy working more. [2]

    3. Two groups of patients who underwent the exact same surgery had different health outcomes, depending on whether their hospital rooms had a view of a brown block wall or a stand of trees. In particular, the group of patients whose rooms looked out on trees experienced shorter stays — that is, one full day on average — and had a lower need of taking medication to soothe pain. In addition, it was found that their moods were better and that they suffered fewer minor complications. [3]

    4. When two groups of patients in a John Hopkins Hospital were told to spend the hours before surgery either a) listening to recordings of a birdsong and a babbling brook and looking at a poster depicting a landscape, or b) without sounds or image, the former group reported significantly better pain management than the latter one. [4]

    5. When participants in a University of Essex experiment were shown before & after pictures of urban and rural scenes, and afterwards were put on a treadmill, those who were shown pleasant rural scenes had a significantly lower blood pressure, while those who were shown unpleasant urban photos were found to have an increase in their blood pressure levels. [5]

As you can understand, the physical and mental health benefits one can derive from spending time in nature are tremendous. Unfortunately, living in city jungles and being confined in spaces of concrete, most of us are unaware of nature’s healing power, and hence don’t make a conscious effort to come closer to the natural world.

Now that you are aware, make sure to start spending more of your time in nature and reap its amazing benefits!

“Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.” ~John Muir

  • Trump Presents NCAA Champs With Fast Food Feast

Trump Presents NCAA Champs With Fast Food Feast

Trump stacked silver platters with fast food for his White House guests — yes, really

In celebration of their national college football championship win, Trump had the Clemson Tigers NCAA team to the White House for dinner. Only because of the ongoing government shutdown, most of the White House kitchen staff is on furlough and couldn’t prepare a meal. So what did Trump do? He ordered in a massive amount of fast food, arranged it on a bunch of silver platters, and fed it to his elite athlete guests.

Trump called the spread “great American food.” It reportedly included items from McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, and Domino’s.

“Because of the shutdown, as you know, we have the great Clemson team with us,” Trump said, according to Buzzfeed. “So we went out and we ordered American fast food paid for by me. Lots of hamburgers, lots of pizza, I think they’d like it better than anything we could give. And so, we’ll have a little fun.”

Great being with the National Champion Clemson Tigers last night at the White House. Because of the Shutdown I served them massive amounts of Fast Food (I paid), over 1000 hamburgers etc. Within one hour, it was all gone. Great guys and big eaters!

    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 15, 2019

“I paid.” Like, how is this real life?

In this video, you can literally hear the team talking about how ridiculous this is. One mentions that they thought it was a joke.

Clemson’s championship athletes cannot believe that Trump actually served them a ton of junk food at the White House.

They said so out loud in this video.

    — Brian J. Karem (@BrianKarem) January 14, 2019

What’s more is that the president announced that, because of the shutdown, he was paying for all the fast food himself. How generous of him, to personally pay for the cheapest prepared food you can get in this country. But hey, he put it on the nice silver trays. He also put out the white linens and lit the White House candelabras, because if the food is gonna suck, you gotta go for some atmosphere, I guess.

I can’t get over how Trump’s fast food feast with Clemson was candlelit. And served on legit White House China. This is such a Donald Trump thing to do. Mister Rich Guy Donald couldn’t shell out a few thousand bucks for a catered dinner? What a broke classless ogre. Embarrassing.

    — Scott Dworkin (@funder) January 15, 2019

Oh, and this classy event wouldn’t be complete without a super douchey dig at Melania. The president reportedly told his guests that he didn’t want to feed them anything made by the First Lady, so he ordered fast food instead. Because telling a crowd of guests and reporters that fast food is better than anything his wife can make is something our president does now. MAGA, amirite?

If this were kindergartners and the president invited them over for Happy Meals, it would be pretty darn adorable. But these are adults. More than that, they are world class athletes who train daily and follow a strict nutritional plan. But sure, give ’em platters of Big Macs and Domino’s pizza.

McDonald Trump owns a restaurant in DC but decided to give top athletes fast food.

    This describes his whole presidency.

Can you imagine? You’re a guest to the White House. You show up and see white linens and lit candelabras. And then you’re served silver trays of food that turns out to be from goddamn McDonald’s. WTF.

If it weren’t for all the photos, we’d think this story was fake. It’s that ridiculous. But nope, it really happened. America in 2019, y’all.
