Oregon officials kill American black bear because it “habituated,” became too friendly after humans took selfies with it and fed it food near lake

A young black bear was killed after it had been spotted several times near Henry Hagg Lake in Oregon, state wildlife officials said. The bear had become “habituated” or accustomed to the area after people left food for it near Scoggins Valley Park, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife officials told KOIN.

The friendly bear had been fed trail mix, sunflower seeds and cracked corn.

It also appeared in several selfies taken by park-goers. Once the bear became used to humans, it became difficult for it to relocate, experts said, increasing the likelihood that the bear would have dangerous interactions with humans in the future.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office shared photos of the bear, warning people to stay away from the area while they try to get the cub back into the woods. The bear ultimately had to be put down, KOIN reports.

    — WCSO Oregon (@WCSOOregon)

“This is a classic example of why we implore members of the public not to feed bears,” wildlife biologist Kurt Licence told KOIN. “While the individuals who put food out for this bear may have had good intentions, bears should never, ever be fed.”

In Oregon, it is illegal to scatter food or garbage that could attract “potentially habituated wildlife,” according to KOIN.

Licence said it is unfortunate that the bear was fed in the first place — especially in an area where many families go for recreation and so close to a busy road.

Jennifer Harrison, who visited Hagg Lake with her family, said she’s always wanted to see a bear, but it is unfortunate that humans were the cause of this one’s demise.

“They got [the] bear killed and that’s not OK,” she told KOIN. “They tried to do something they thought was a good thing, but it ended up getting the bear killed so please do not feed the bears.”

Harrison said she has seen evidence of bears and cougars in the area and that her neighbor actually took a photo of a bear sitting by the side of the road. It’s unclear if the bear in question is the one her friend saw.

  • $32b demand – Venezuelans seek hefty compensation for Petrojam takeover

$32b demand – Venezuelans seek hefty compensation for Petrojam takeover

Venezuelan oil subsidiary PDV Caribe is demanding that the Government of Jamaica (GOJ) pay a minimum of US$50 million (J$6.5 billion) in core share value as compensation for the forcible takeover of its 49 per cent stake in the local refinery, Petrojam.

But The Gleaner understands that the claim includes supplementary add-ons in relation to dividends and prospective value that could bring the total compensation package sought to US$250 million (J$32.5 billion).

The Jamaican Government’s initial offer of US$40 million was rejected by Venezuela and a later proposal of US$50 million also refused.

Yesterday, reliable Gleaner sources said that the GOJ has been sent communication this month on Venezuela’s behalf, through its legal team headed by Queen’s Counsel Michael Hylton.

Hylton could not be reached yesterday evening, but Gleaner sources confirmed the figure.

Jamaica’s Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith also acknowledged that the Government has received communication from Venezuela. However, she said, no lawsuit has been filed.

Through the Compulsory Acquisition (Shares in Petrojam Limited) Act 2019, the Jamaican Government gave itself powers to acquire the 392,490,000 shares owned by Venezuela in Petrojam. After a valuation by Muse Stancil – the full-service, global energy consultancy firm specialising in the mid- and downstream sectors of the petroleum industry – Jamaica expropriated the shares.

Energy Minister Fayval Williams, who replaced Andrew Wheatley on February 14, said Petrojam’s market value was eroded by nearly US$100 million because of a decade of broken promises, delays and inaction by the Venezuelan government.

She told Parliament that Petrojam’s market value was listed at between US$126 million and US$128 million by Muse Stancil in 2006, when Jamaica signed a joint-venture agreement with Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), Venezuela’s state-owned oil company and parent to PDV Caribe that was expected to finance a major upgrade of the 55-year-old refinery, among other things.

But Williams said that an evaluation carried out in 2018 by the same consultants listed Petrojam’s market value at US$34 million.

Muse Stancil, however, has remained silent, four months after The Gleaner first sought responses about the massive variance in the sale-as-is price and the investment value.

Sources have said that there is a non-disclosure agreement between the company and Jamaica.

At the time of the share swipe, Petrojam was jointly owned by the governments of Venezuela and Jamaica, with Jamaica’s shares – 51 per cent – held by the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica.

Venezuela valued the refinery at just under US$90 million, which included the initial sum paid for shares at the time of the joint-venture agreement, plus unpaid dividends and retained earnings.

A&A Lime Hall Development Limited, a company incorporated in 2004 as a rental service in Montego Bay, St James, had also offered PDV Caribe SA US$100 million for its 49 per cent stake in Petrojam Limited.

PDV Caribe SA is the company tasked with organising and coordinating PetroCaribe’s hydrocarbon transportation network, including its vessels, storage facilities, and port terminals, as well as refining and distribution capacity.

PetroCaribe is an energy cooperation agreement signed by 14 Caribbean countries, including Jamaica, which was established to secure a direct oil supply among members on preferential terms. Created in 2005 by Venezuelan state-owned PDVSA, and acting as a subsidiary, PDV Caribe holds interests in several subsidiaries established in each of these countries.

PDV Caribe is headquartered in Caracas.

Australian dollar nears decade-low after Reserve Bank justifies interest rate cut

Australian dollar nears decade-low after Reserve Bank justifies interest rate cut

    Updated June 18, 2019 17:08:20

The Australian dollar has fallen to its lowest level in around a decade as investors anticipate further interest rate cuts from the Reserve Bank in the next few months.

    Key points:

By 12:00pm (AEST), the local currency had fallen 0.2 per cent to 68.42 US cents, following the RBA’s release of its June meeting minutes.

That is the lowest level since January 2016, and you have to go all the way back to the aftermath of the global financial crisis in March 2009 to find an even lower level.

The minutes revealed Australia’s central bankers thought it was “more likely than not” that it would be appropriate for the cash rate to fall in the period ahead.

However, the board recognised that lower interest rates are not the only monetary policy lever.

It also said that other options might assist in lowering the rate of unemployment towards 4.5 percent, the level which the RBA regards as full employment.

Late last year, RBA deputy governor Guy Debelle has flagged the option of quantitative easing — or metaphorical money printing — to help stimulate the economy through bond buying and asset purchases, used by major global central banks during the global financial crisis.

The minutes reiterated previous public statements that the RBA is now focussed on lowering the jobless rate given it is “apparent that the labour market still had significant spare capacity”.

    Depositors feel rate pain

The minutes also revealed that impact of lower interest rates on depositors — in particular older Australians — was a key consideration in the RBA’s decision to slash the cash rate to a record low earlier this month.

The “implications of lower interest rates on household incomes” was discussed at length, and “changes in interest rates can have different effects on different groups of households”, according to the RBA’s minutes of its June meeting.

“Members recognised that many older Australians rely on interest income which would decline with lower rates,” the RBA said.

However, board members opted to cut the cash rate to 1.25 per cent to help lower the unemployment rate after “carefully considering” the impact on people relying on interest from bank deposits.

The argument in favour of cutting rates was based on the outlook for a lower Australian dollar, reduced borrowing rates for business, and lower interest payments for households which would free up cash for other spending.

Since the RBA’s decision to cut rates, banks have passed on either all or most of the reduction to borrowers — while also reducing deposit rates to the disappointment of older Australians who rely on the income stream.

The RBA board also discussed the risks of lower interest rates, especially given the current high levels of household debt.

“Members judged a decline in interest rates was unlikely to encourage a material pickup in borrowing by households that would add to medium term risks in the economy,” the minutes said.

The board also noted the trade dispute between the United States and China had “intensified the downside risk posed to the global economic outlook”.

  • BREAKING: Trump Announces ICE To Begin Removing ‘Millions Of Illegal Aliens’ Next Week

BREAKING: Trump Announces ICE To Begin Removing ‘Millions Of Illegal Aliens’ Next Week

President Donald Trump announced late on Monday night that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will begin the process of removing illegal aliens unlawfully present in the United States.

“Next week ICE will begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “They will be removed as fast as they come in. Mexico, using their strong immigration laws, is doing a very good job of stopping people long before they get to our Southern Border. Guatemala is getting ready to sign a Safe-Third Agreement. The only ones who won’t do anything are the Democrats in Congress. They must vote to get rid of the loopholes, and fix asylum! If so, Border Crisis will end quickly!”

….long before they get to our Southern Border. Guatemala is getting ready to sign a Safe-Third Agreement. The only ones who won’t do anything are the Democrats in Congress. They must vote to get rid of the loopholes, and fix asylum! If so, Border Crisis will end quickly!

    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump)

Trump’s announcement comes after the administration reached a deal with Mexico two weeks in which Mexico agreed to stop the flow of illegal aliens headed to the U.S. border and in return, the administration canceled massive tariffs it was prepared to implement against Mexico.

Also on Monday, State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said that the administration was canceling future economic aid to the Northern Triangle, which is comprised of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

“We will not provide new funds for programs in those countries until we are satisfied the Northern Triangle governments are taking concrete actions to reduce the number of illegal migrants coming to the U.S. border,” Ortagus said. “Working with Congress, we will reprogram those funds to other priorities as appropriate.”

  • Scientists Say They Can Recreate Living Dinosaurs Within the Next Few Years

Scientists Say They Can Recreate Living Dinosaurs Within the Next Few Years

    2 min read

Don’t we already know how this movie’s going to end?

In a potentially terrifying case of life imitating art, the renowned paleontologist who served as the inspiration for Jurassic Park protagonist Dr. Alan Grant is spearheading genetic research that could engineer dinosaurs back into existence within the next five to 10 years, he says.

While Dr. Jack Horner, who has consulted on all four Jurassic films, initially believed the key to recreating the prehistoric creatures lay in working with ancient DNA strands, further study about DNA degradation over time has since ruled out that possibility.

Instead, a group of scientists at Harvard and Yale have turned their eye to — wait for it — the modern-day chicken. “Of course, birds are dinosaurs,” Horner told People magazine. “So we just need to fix them so they look a little more like a dinosaur.”

In an attempt to reverse evolution, the team has already made significant strides in mutating chickens back to the very creatures from which they descended. If that wasn’t enough genetic splicing and dicing, Harvard scientists attempted a similar feat recently by inserting the genes of a woolly mammoth into elephants in order to recreate the extinct beasts. Whoa, baby.

If the four major differences between dinosaurs and birds are their tails, arms, hands and mouths, Horner and team have already flipped certain genetic switches in chicken embryos to reverse-engineer a bird’s beak into a dinosaur-like snout.

“Actually, the wings and hands are not as difficult,” Horner said, adding that a “Chickensoraus” — as he calls the creation — is well on its way to becoming reality. “The tail is the biggest project,” he said. “But on the other hand, we have been able to do some things recently that have given us hope that it won’t take too long.”

Check out Horner discussing the endeavor, among other topics, in the video below:

Watch Tom Morello launch selfie-taking fan’s phone into the crowd

Tom Morello was just one of the artists who played at last weekend’s 1010WKQK’s Piqniq festival at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre at Tinley Park, Illinois.

During his performance, he invited fans up on to the stage while he played. But one was left red-faced when he attempted to take a selfie with Morello.

As can be seen in the video footage below, Morello was having none of it and grabbed the phone and threw it into the main crowd.

Morello later reacted to the moment on Twitter, saying: “Put a phone in my face onstage and I’ll throw it. #LiveInTheMoment. Great fun today at the 101WKQX show. #SweetHomeChicago.”

The guitarist later received some flak on Twitter about the incident, to which Morello responded: “When you invite guests to your stage and clearly tell them, ‘If you stick a cell phone in my face I will throw it’ and then their uncontrollable entitled selfie urges overcome their sense of reason, they get their f*ckin phones thrown. Simple.”

He later added the fan got his phone back.

Last month, Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford hit the headlines when he booted the phone from the hands on a front row fan during their set at the Rosemont Theatre in Illinois.

He later explained: “The facts are we love our fans and you can film us all you like and watch our show on your phone rather than in the flesh.

“However, if you physically interfere with the Metal God’s performance, you now know what will happen.”

Morello and Halford join a growing list of musicians who have reacted to fans with phones at concerts in recent years, including A Perfect CircleGreen DaySlipknot’s Corey TaylorDisturbed and Peter Frampton.

DMX Reports for Duty as Detective on Set of ‘Chronicle of a Serial Killer’

DMX is resuming his acting career, but in a role most would consider a stretch … ’cause now he’s playing Johnny Law and busting bad guys. It’s called “range” in the biz.

We got this shot of DMX on the set of the upcoming film, “Chronicle of a Serial Killer” … and he’s fully embracing the role of a cop, badge and all! It’s a pretty striking image, considering X’s lengthy rap sheet.

The movie features Brendan Sexton as a serial murderer … and DMX is playing Detective White, who’s trying to track down the killer. Tara Reid, Eric Roberts and Aly Mang are also starring in the film.

TMZ broke the story … Michael Madsen was booted from the cast because of his recent DUI charge, and as it turns out … DMX was tabbed to fill Michael’s shoes.

The director, Steve Stanulis, tells TMZ … when his casting director suggested X for the role, he knew it was a perfect fit, and the rapper didn’t even have to audition. Steve says he has no doubt DMX is “going to bring a different dynamic to the role.”

Filming just started in New York, and Steve says he’s excited to bring DMX into the fold.

No word on if X gets to work with the K-9 unit.

  • Bella Thorne Rips Whoopi Goldberg For Shaming Nude Photos on ‘The View’

Bella Thorne Rips Whoopi Goldberg For Shaming Nude Photos on ‘The View’

Bella Thorne is firing back at Whoopi Goldberg after she seemingly shamed Bella for having nude photos on her phone, on the cloud, or anywhere.

In a series of super emotional posts Tuesday, Bella tearfully blasted Whoopi … who took the stance on “The View” that celebs who take nude photos are just asking for trouble with hackers and, essentially, said they should know better.

Bella said Whoopi’s comment only inflames a painful situation. She also suggested Whoopi’s lack of sympathy toward young people who get exposed this way is part of the reason people commit suicide after their nudes are leaked.

In case you missed it … Bella’s Twitter was hacked last week, and over the weekend she posted a series of topless photos in order to beat her alleged hacker to the punch. She says the person was attempting to extort her with the racy pics.

Whoopi, Meghan McCain, Sunny Hostin and Joy Behar debated the issue in Monday’s episode of “The View” … and their convo clearly triggered Bella.

Bella says she’s not going on “The View” anymore, because she doesn’t want to be judged by a bunch of older women … and she’s calling out the hosts for brainwashing the next generation and accusing them of some serious double standards.

This Same-Sex Couple are giving them all a bad image and avoid any of them at all cost!

These people are just mean!  What on earth is wrong with them.  Really!!  You want a cake for your special day to be created by people who do not want to make it?  Why?  You think you are making a point?  The point I get here, is you are a mean, vindictive, cruel, selfish and full of a need for political drama.  You do not care about helping others understand.  We must follow your rules, and you do not have to follow any yourself.  Let people be!  Do you think you are so much better than anyone else?

The Supreme Court is throwing out an Oregon court ruling against bakers who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. The justices’ action Monday keeps the high-profile case off the court’s election-year calendar and orders state judges to take a new look at the dispute between the lesbian couple and the owners of a now-closed bakery in Gresham.

The case involves bakers Melissa and Aaron Klein, who paid a $135,000 judgment to the couple for declining to create a cake for them in 2013. The owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, who closed their shop months after the controversy began, refused to sell a wedding cake to a lesbian couple, citing a conflict with their religious beliefs. “I asked for the name of the bride and groom. She informed me that it was two brides. And I literally apologized to her. I said I’m sorry, I didn’t’ mean to waste your time,” said Aaron Klein.

The justices already have agreed to decide whether federal civil rights law protects people from job discrimination because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

However, a little advice to the couple that bakes the cake.  Do you believe in the power of the Holy Spirit and Jesus?  You really need to check  this site  https://unveiledlife.org/.You have an opportunity to bless your cake creation with the power of the Holy Spirit.  Get that wedding crowd anointed with the Spirit of Christ with every bite they eat.  You are blessed to have this event and many more, it sounds like, to invade this group with the taste of goodness!
