Fashion world shaken by cultural appropriation claims

The women embroiderers of the remote Mexican mountain village of Tenango de Doria made worldwide headlines this week when their government went to war with an American designer for “plagiarising” their patterns.

Wes Gordon, the artistic director of the New York label founded by Venezuelan designer Carolina Herrera, found himself accused of cultural appropriation.

The women of the indigenous community in the east of the country told AFP how they felt cheated of their traditional motifs where “each element has a personal, family or community meaning”.

It is the latest in a long line of controversies where multinational brands stand accused of ransacking the cultural heritage of poor villagers.

Four years ago another indigenous Mexican community complained that the French designer Isabel Marant had lifted a 600-year-old Tlahuitoltepec blouse design that symbolises the Mixe people for one of her collections.

Mexico has previously protested about Zara, Mango and Michael Kors designs.

    – Tougher copyright laws –

Some of the country’s leaders now want to toughen a copyright law that already protects traditional patterns to punish “plagiarism that different indigenous peoples have suffered”.

It is a suggestion that sent a chill down the spines of some designers at Paris fashion week.

Berluti’s new artistic director Kris van Assche — who headed Dior’s menswear line for 11 years — told AFP that “when I was at fashion school we learned that there was nothing shameful about taking inspiration from other cultures.

“We must be careful not to attack everybody for everything,” the Belgian creator added.

Rising young Spanish star Alejandro Gomez Palomo was more dismissive.

“Cultural appropriation is something we should all forget,” said the designer, who refuses to leave his own Andalusian village where his Palomo Spain label is based.

  • Japanese sign up for DNA matchmaking as country faces demographic crisis

Japanese sign up for DNA matchmaking as country faces demographic crisis

he scene resembles a typical blind speed-dating event: 13 women and 13 men, seated on either side of a bamboo screen in an upmarket Tokyo restaurant, are chatting in pairs on a strictly timed three-minute rotation.

But the doctor hovering on the fringes and the scientific documents held in the participant’s hands, however, offer a hint that this is no ordinary dating event: for everyone attending has undergone a DNA test in a bid to find their best romantic match.

Welcome to the world of DNA matchmaking. Forget hobbies, professions, ages or nose sizes: one critical new criteria for finding the perfect partner was recently added to Japan’s fast-paced dating world, with the launch of a new service that promises to find love based on genetic compatibility.

Created by the dating company Nozze., which operates 21 branches across Japan, DNA Matching works with scientists at a Tokyo laboratory in order to decode the science of attraction and find the perfect match for its clients.

The company staged its first “DNA Party” at a restaurant in Ginza earlier this month – attended by 26 guests and resulting in four new couples – with more events planned across the country, including a special DNA Cruise in the autumn.

Its launch is timely: Japan is grappling with something of an epidemic of singles who are unable to find a partner, an issue intrinsically linked to the nation’s famously low marriage and birth rates and doing little to help balance the rapidly aging demographics of Japanese society.

Earlier this week, new government figures revealed that almost half of Japanese singles who wished to marry were unable to find a suitable partner, with more than 60 per cent admitting they were not doing anything to change the situation.

One of the main reasons for failing to settle down was cited as a lack of opportunities to meet an appropriate partner – a situation most likely made worse by the nation’s culture of long working hours. Other reasons ranged from lack of financial resources to an inability to connect with people, according to the report.

And so it is perhaps little surprise that a raft of dating events and matchmaking innovations have cropped up in Japan in recent years, from speed dating in temples for single nuns to local government-funded matchmaking events in depopulated areas of rural Japan.

  • Mutant DNA-edited babies created by ‘Frankenstein’ scientist ‘secretly born in China’

Mutant DNA-edited babies created by ‘Frankenstein’ scientist ‘secretly born in China’

Scientist He Jiankui was condemned around the world last year where he brazenly announced in a YouTube video he had produced the first gene-edited humans in history – dubbed “Frankenstein babies” by some critics.

Dr Pete Mills, the Assistant Director of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, attended the scientific conference in Hong Kong where the world first learnt about the experiment.

Speaking to Daily Star Online, he said the scientific community was aware at the time of the creation of other mutant baby pregnancies in China – and the women would have come to the end of their pregnancies around now.

However, information on the cases ceased to be released following an international outcry – and China’s repressive state and censorious laws could be to blame.

Jiankui was criticised harshly because of the ethical questions about experimenting on humans, and last month it was reported China was planning tougher laws and regulations.

“We may or may not hear about those [secret babies],” Dr Mills continued, explaining that the Chinese scientists behind the experiment have still not published their full data following the outcry.

He said there was no evidence Chinese people have a different attitude to experiment on humans, but insisted the experiment by Jiankui and his team was “absolutely not acceptable.”

Dr Mills described the experiments on humans as impossible to justify “where we really do not know what the consequence will be and if there will be terrible consequences”.

Human genetics are extremely complex, and small changes to one gene, understood to influence one body part, can unexpectedly effect other organs or bodily systems.

Just weeks ago, it was reported that the two gene-edited babies might have shorter life expectancies, as people with altered genes appear to be more susceptible to infection.

Shortly after the babies were announced – which shocked many top scientists as Jiankui was not a known leader in the field – reports circulated that Jiankui was on house arrest and little has been heard from him since.

Furthermore, as Jiankui has previously argued, the privacy of the small girls and their family is an important factor.

The babies, known only as Lulu and Nana, were just single cells when a technology known as CRISPR editing was used to remove a gene known to offer the HIV virus a way to infect people.

As Daily Star Online also reports today, CRISP has made gene-editing experiments far cheaper and easier than ever before.

This raises the prospect that non-state backed entities could create mutant babies who are already out there, Dr Mills says, while stressing this is unlikely right now.

Just a couple of weeks ago, it was reported that a Russian molecular biologist is seeking approval to genetically modify more human embryos.

Molecular biologist Denis Rebrikov told Nature he is considering implanting gene-edited embryos into women, possibly before the end of the year if he can get approval.

“We as a species need to come to terms with this,” Dr William Hurlbut, a senior research scholar in neurobiology at Stanford Medical School, commented at CNBC’s Healthy Returns conference last month.

“For the first time in the history of life, we can affect the future of our evolution.”

Tattoo Story About Heaven and Life After Death Is Going Viral

A remarkable story about life after death has gone viral, all because of a special tattoo.

In an Instagram post, a California woman named Madie Johnson explains her new tattoo and the miracle behind it.

Johnson’s Aunt Tina had died after suffering a severe heart attack. She was brought back to life four times by first responders before making it to a hospital.

There, her aunt was “put on a defibrillator” and woke up. She was intubated and unable to speak, so she asked for a pen scrawling the message “it’s real.”

When asked “what’s real?” her aunt responded – tears in her eyes – by pointing up to heaven.

“Her story is too real not to share and has given me a stronger confidence in a faith that so often goes unseen,” Maddie writes. “It has given me a tangibleness to an eternal hope that is not too far away. I love you @_tinahines! The way you boldly love Jesus and others has changed the way I hope to live and love.”

That “It’s real” message is now a memorial, tattooed on Maddie’s wrist, spreading her eternal hope to those around her.

Maddie writes the whole story on Instagram saying:

“A little over a year ago my Aunt Tina, one of the most amazing, discerning, and healthy people I know had an unexpected cardiac arrest and according to doctors had died and was brought back to life four times by my Uncle Brian and first responders before arriving to the hospital. She was put on a defibrillator and after miraculously waking up the first thing she did, unable to speak because she was intubated, was ask for a pen and in my cousin’s journal wrote ‘it’s real’. The people in the room asked ‘what’s real?’ and she responded by pointing up to heaven with tears in her eyes.

  • PA National Guard Unit Bans Christian Scouts From Tour Because of Religious Beliefs

PA National Guard Unit Bans Christian Scouts From Tour Because of Religious Beliefs

A Pennsylvania-based Christian scouting troop was banned from touring a National Guard facility due to the troop’s religious affiliation.

The  Fort Indiantown Gap National Guard regularly hosts tours for Boy Scout troops, civic and other youth organizations.  However, last February, Trail Life USA Troopmaster Joseph Evege sent an email asking if he could schedule a tour for Troop PA-2717.  After submitting the required paperwork, in April, Evege was told the group could not participate because they belonged to a Christian scouting organization.

Trail Life USA is a church-based, Christ-centered and boy-focused scouting organization that was founded in 2013 as an alternative to the Boy Scouts, according to Fox News.

In an op-ed posted on the Fox News website,Todd Starnes, host of ‘The Todd Starnes Radio Show” and “Starnes Country” on Fox Nation, reminded the Guard unit “the idea that Christian boys would be banned strictly because of their religious beliefs is not only ludicrous, but it’s also illegal.”

“Fort Indiantown Gap’s denial of access to the base facilities, which are open to other civic, fraternal, and youth organizations and for youth activities, constitutes viewpoint discrimination,” First Liberty Institute and Independence Law Center wrote in a letter to the National Guard.

The Guard unit responded by allowing the Trail Life troop to tour the facility.

“We are grateful that Guard has chosen to open its doors to the Trail Life troop,” said Independence Law Center Senior Counsel Jeremy Samek.  “The boys from Trail Life USA’s troop deserve to be treated fairly and equally.  I know that they are excited to get the opportunity to interact with those who defend our freedom.”

“The Trail Life troop is very pleased with the outcome and appreciates the manner in which the Guard worked so quickly to resolve this dispute, Lea Patterson, Counsel for First Liberty Institute noted.

John Stemberger, the chairman of the Trail Life USA board, said it’s disheartening that a “federal institution like the Army is buying into this leftist idea that faith has to be excluded from the public square.”

“It’s sad that an institution of our society is treating faith like it is some kind of bacteria or virus that needs to be exterminated from secular society,” Stemberger told Fox News. “We need faith integrated with society.”

Stemberger said he was thankful for the work of the religious liberty law firms.

“Thank God for good lawyers,” he said.

The National Guard’s public affairs office did not return multiple inquiries seeking comment, according to Fox News.

  • How To Pack Your Bug Out Bag For Survival

How To Pack Your Bug Out Bag For Survival

Scared yet excited, Rick raced anxiously to retrieve the large bundle he had carefully hidden in the corner of his garage. This was the moment he had anticipated, and he was ready.

Several months ago, Rick had come across a video about Bug Out Bags (BOBs) while surfing the Internet; even with no outdoor or survival experience, he decided he needed one. Planning a personal BOB seemed like an awful lot of work, so in his panic he bought the most expensive pre-made bug out kit he could find. After dropping a whopping $3,000, he felt confident he was prepared for any emergency and left the pack hidden for 2 years. Now, he would finally get the chance to use it.

What happened to force him to bug out? It could have been any number of things such a natural disaster, civil unrest, viral outbreak, or some other type of event that throws society into a freefall ; but the ‘why’ isn’t what’s important. When you need your BOB, the question ‘why’ becomes much less important than the question ‘will’: will this survival kit keep you alive for 72 hours? Using Rick as an example, I’m going to take you through the basic steps in properly packing your bug out kit so that if (or when) you need it, ‘will’ won’t be a question – it’ll be a certainty.

  • 33 Essential Foods to Stock Pile

33 Essential Foods to Stock Pile

There are many schools of thought on what should be stock piled in the event of a disaster or prolonged period of social disruption or societal collapse. It is hard to say with complete authority what “The best” foods are. This will depend on a number of factors, such as storage space, number of people to be fed, availability of water for preparation, availability of a means to cook foods or heat water, and the list goes on. There are however some standards that can guide pretty much anyone in the right direction. Just be certain that whatever you store, it provides enough calories, a dietary proper balance, vitamins, minerals, and fats. Remember, a crisis has a way of creating situations that will increase your caloric requirements, and that will tax your immune system and electrolyte balance.

When I am going through a grocery store gathering survival food, I get some strange looks from people close enough to hear me muttering under my breath as I discount items. Phrases like “not enough calories”, “needs more fat”, not enough carbs”, and the like roll off my tongue frequently. The truth of the matter is that what we consider to be a healthy diet in normal times is probably inadequate in a high stress, very active, crisis situation. There is a reason we like carbs, and fats, and sugars, and that reason is our body needs these things. The human palate developed in times when being physically active and dealing with life threatening events was the norm, and when a steady supply of food was not a guarantee. Hence the urge to get all we can when we can, which leads to rampant obesity in modern sedentary times but is adaptive to survival in harder times.

So, here is my list of indispensable foods to store in quantity for hard times. I have tried to take into account caloric as well as nutritional content, ease of storage, shelf life, and the intangible of enjoyable to eat. Let’s face it, it doesn’t have to taste good to keep you alive, but it does to keep you happy! Never underestimate the power of a good tasty meal to make things seem better, and never underestimate the power of a positive outlook to help survive in hard conditions!

    1. Bulk Dry Goods

Bulk dry goods are a great way to put in a large supply of staples. They should be stored in oxygen purged, food grade buckets with a Mylar bucket liner and O2 absorber for best storage life.

Be aware that some of these, like whole grains, require some processing in order to make the best use of them. So, if you are going to stock things that require processing, be certain to have the tools and equipment required to do the work!

Oatmeal is great stuff! Filling and nutritious, and economical! It is also pretty darn tasty, and if you have some add ons it is easy to dress up for variety.

I like to purchase it in sealed 5 gallon buckets, which yield about 222 servings per bucket. Even with 6 of us in the house each bucket provides a month’s worth of breakfasts. These buckets can be found on EBay, or you can repackage yourself.

Rice prepper foodRice. This is an old standby. It can form the base of many tasty and nutritious meals. Be aware that although it requires no processing, it does require quite a bit of water to cook. It is most economical to buy rice in 40 lb bags and repackage it into buckets yourself, a 5 gallon bucket will hold a 40lb bag. For a bit more you can find rice sold pre-sealed in buckets from a number of sources.

Beans Walmart Survival foodBeans. Another good staple, and when combined with your rice, some seasoning, and canned meats it makes a great meal! And don’t forget about a big pot of chili when you have meat from wild game or a butchered animal.

Beans can be bought in pre-sealed 5 gallon buckets as well, but it is more economical to buy in large bags and repackage it in buckets yourself. Get a variety of beans, Red, Black, pinto, kidney, according to your taste.

Pastas. Good source of carbs, and a firm foundation for a variety of meals. Even more so than with rice though, be aware of the water required to cook pastas.

They can be stored in buckets, or sealed in vacuum seal food saver bags with an O2 absorber.

    grains survival food storage

Grains. Grains are good for making flour or meal. Wheat and corn are the most common. Bear in mind that you will need a grain mill to process these, and I recommend a good hand mill in case power is an issue. By storing whole grains instead of flour or meal you drastically increase storage life. Again you can buy these in ore-sealed buckets, or repackage bulk purchases yourself to save money. If you want to increase the shelf life even more, you can turn them into flour and then into Hardtacks.

Related: Turning Flour into Hardtack Biscuits With Over 100 Year Shelf Life

dried fruits prepperDried fruits. These are a great addition to your oatmeal or other dishes or just for snacking on.

They can be purchased by the bucket, or in number 10 cans form a variety of online sources. At Costco they have the #10 cans of fruit like pears or apple slices and each of these has 25 servings. 5 of these will cost about $25 and give your family their daily dose of fruit.

Sugar. An infinite variety of uses, a good source of carbs and very cheap. Stock lots stored in 5 gallon buckets.

No matter if white, brown or powdered, sugar it won’t spoil (sugar inhibits microbial growth) as long as it’s stored in an airtight recipient, away from humidity and sunlight.

honey stock pilleHoney. Honey is a great natural sweetener. If you store local honey it is also good to help combat allergies and boost the immune system. It also has first aid uses, it is a natural antibiotic salve.

Honey is one food that never spoils! Although the look of your product will change somewhat over time, it will never actually spoil. It will begin to look yellow and cloudy instead of golden and clear and will get thicker and grainy over time, eventually looking white and hard. But, it is still good. In this form, the honey may have started the process of crystallizing.

To decrystallize honey, place the sealed jar in a warm, non-boiling pot of water and heat the honey. The crystals will dissolve as the honey heats. Do not add water to the honey. This will raise the moisture content and the honey will ferment.

You can also find it in 5 gallon buckets on Amazon for $189, but my guess is that you’ll never need

  • Cat walkway: How to make space for your furkids

Cat walkway: How to make space for your furkids

We made a simple cat walkway out of LACK tables.

The view is meowellous from up here!

IKEA LACK tables are strong enough to support cats, even if they are mounted upside down. So to give our cats more room in our house, we mounted tables hanging from the ceiling.

    Materials:

    • Wood screws (25 – 35mm)
    • Plastic wall plugs (5 mm) and matching screws

    Materials

Want a Cat Walkway on the Ceiling? Here’s how

Firstly, I assembled the tables as intended in the IKEA instructions.

    Lack side table assembly

Then, I screwed angle brackets on the legs of the table with at least two screws per leg. The bracket and the base of the feet should be flush so it can sit properly on the ceiling.

    fastening bracket to legs

The angle brackets I used were far larger than necessary, but I had them lying around.

Repeat this step for as many LACK tables as you need for your cat walkway.

    • Fastening brackets to legs
    • Attach brackets to ceiling for cat walkway

Since our ceiling is made of concrete, I had no problems mounting the angle brackets to it with plastic wall plugs and screws.

In our case, one plastic fixing per leg was more than sufficient to secure the table to the ceiling.

    Metal braces

For get additional security, I connected adjacent tables with metal bars that I screwed to the upper (so now lower) part of the legs to distribute the load over more fixings.

After that, it was a matter of making it comfortable for my cats. We added cushions and pillows. Also some vinyl stickers on the LACK table tops to decorate them.

    Cat walkway IKEA LACK hack

To get to the cat walkway, we have a set of cat steps on the wall for them.

The cats seem to love the extra elevated space they have to roam and watch us humans from up there.

  • DIY green lawn care tips : 10 detailed tips to get you the best looking lawn in the neighborhood

DIY green lawn care tips : 10 detailed tips to get you the best looking lawn in the neighborhood

Yesterday, Mickey opened his e-mail inbox to this question… ” I saw a picture of your house on your blog.  How do you always get your yard to look nice?”    I laughed because a green lawn is his pride and joy, so that reader just made his day!

Mickey and I have lived in three houses since our marriage in 2004.  In each house, he has surprised me by taking our grass from awful to amazing.  I’m sharing a few ideas below, with affiliate links, to help you find what you are looking for.  Our latest yard does throw a few ‘stones’ into the mix, literally… our yard is filled with stones, but he is doing great with it, nonetheless.

Here are my husband’s tips for having a great yard…

1-  First, you are going to Aerate, but before you do this, you need to locate your sprinkler heads and mark them with yard flags (or use plastic hangers to mark them).

2- Aerate your yard in mid-September.   He suggests core or plugs aerating.  He doesn’t like the pull behind ones but said that you have more control with the walk-behind.    He also said that you need to do a double pass (doing each area twice), but he does three or four passes in areas that need it more.    He will go horizontal and then does the second round vertical (to your yard pattern).

2- Over-seed.  Use a good starter fertilizer.   By over-seed, he means that you put a LOT of seed down, even more in the areas that you did your extra aerating.

3-  With your starter fertilizer, you will want to go over and add fast-acting lime on top of the fertilizer (on the same night).

4- It is best to do all of this either right after it has rained when the ground is soft.

5- In the winter, you want to put down a winterizer, to help control the weed growth that will occur in the spring.

6- Keep your grass tall, about 2-3 inches.  This prevents it from burning (looking white) and it keeps the roots healthy.   Cutting it too short will kill the roots and allows weeds to grow.  (You can even get a robot lawnmower like this one from Husqvarna.)

7- In the spring, you will want to use pre-emergent fertilizers, with herbicide.  This will prevent weeds.

8- Go over the pre-emergent fertilizer with lime.

9- Water early morning, before the sun rises.  We set our irrigation timer to run at 3:00 am.   Do not do this at night, because the water will sit all night and mold can grow (mushrooms and fungus).  In the day, the sun will dry the grass.   Plus, if you use it during the day or evening when the sun is up, it will just cause the water to steam and cause damage to your grass (plus, it wastes water because it is evaporating so quickly)

10- Ensure that your grass is cut with a SHARP lawnmower blade.  You can tell that the blade is getting dull because the tips of the grass will turn white within a day of being cut (so even the best-looking yards will look dried out and not “clean-cut” all because of the blade).

    I hope this helps! 🙂
