Millionaires Flee Their Homelands as Tensions Rise and Taxes Bite

About 108,000 millionaires migrated across borders last year, a 14 percent increase from the prior year, and more than double the level in 2013, according to Johannesburg-based New World Wealth. Australia, U.S. and Canada are the top destinations, according to the research firm, while China and Russia are the biggest losers. The U.K. saw around 3,000 millionaires depart last year with Brexit and taxation cited as possible reasons.  Wealth migration figures point to present conditions — such as crime, lack of business opportunities or religious tensions — but can also be a key future indicator, said Andrew Amoils, head of research at New World Wealth.  “It can be a sign of bad things to come as high-net-worth individuals are often the first people to leave — they have the means to leave unlike middle-class citizens,” he said.

    Top Destinations

Australia tops most “wish lists” for immigrants because of its perceived safety, no inheritance tax and strong business ties to China, Japan and South Korea. It also stands out for its sustained growth, having escaped the financial crisis largely unscathed and avoided recessions for the past 27 years.  The U.S. was the second most popular destination in 2018, with New York City, Los Angeles, Miami and the San Francisco Bay area the preferred options.

    China, India

China’s tightening grip on capital outflows in recent years has placed many of the country’s wealthier citizens in the crosshairs of the taxman, leading to a shift of assets and people. Some rich Asians also move to developed countries looking for more comfort or to improve their children’s education.  The outflow of high-net worth individuals from China and India isn’t particularly concerning from an economic standpoint as far more new millionaires are being created there than are leaving, New World Wealth said.  “Once the standard of living in these countries improves, we expect several wealthy people to move back,” Amoils said.

Volatile emerging markets continued to fuel movement, with Turkey losing 4,000 millionaires last year, the third straight year that many have left. About 7,000 millionaires left Russia last year as the country grappled under sanctions imposed over its annexation of Crimea.  The desire for privacy is also prompting rich individuals to reconsider their place of residence.  Under the Common Reporting Standard, launched by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development in 2017, banks and other financial institutions are disclosing data on foreign account holders to their local tax authority. Authorities automatically exchange relevant information with their counterparts overseas annually, allowing governments to zero in on tax evaders. More than 100 jurisdictions have joined CRS, setting a new precedent for the global exchange of data on offshore assets.  This trend is reflected in the growth in demand for second passports and residencies.  “Many wealthy people are looking for opportunities to reduce risks associated with spreading information about their accounts,” said Polina Kuleshova of Henley & Partners, which provides citizenship advice and publishes rankings such as the Quality of Nationality Index.

A record 26 percent of global millionaires will begin to plan for emigration this year, according to Knight Frank’s 2019 wealth report.

Trump weighs labeling Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group

“The president has consulted with his national security team and leaders in the region who share his concern and this designation is working its way through the internal process,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in an email.  Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi asked Trump to make the designation during an April 9 visit to Washington, a senior U.S. official said, confirming a report in the New York Times on Tuesday.  After the meeting, Trump praised Sisi as a “great president” while a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers raised concerns about Sisi’s human rights record, his efforts to stay in office until 2034 and Egypt’s planned Russian arms purchases.  The White House did not say on what basis it might label the group a terrorist organization and former officials questioned whether the group met the legal standard of engaging in “terrorist activity” that threatens U.S. citizens or national security.  The Brotherhood, which estimates its membership at up to 1 million people, came to power in Egypt’s first modern free election in 2012, a year after long-serving autocrat and U.S. ally Hosni Mubarak was toppled in a popular uprising.  As Egypt’s army chief in 2013, Sisi engineered the removal of elected President Mohamed Mursi, a senior Brotherhood figure, and a subsequent crackdown on its supporters as well as liberal opposition in Egypt. Sisi was then elected president in 2014.  After Mursi’s overthrow, the Brotherhood was swiftly banned in Egypt. Authorities declared it a terrorist organization and jailed thousands of followers as well as much of its leadership, including Mursi.  The Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, says it is a non-violent movement and denies any relationship to violent insurgencies waged by al Qaeda and Islamic State militants.  “We will remain … steadfast in our work in accordance with our moderate and peaceful thinking,” the Brotherhood said in a statement on its website.

  • Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day: Revisiting Islam’s Greatest Slaughter of Christians | Faith

Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day: Revisiting Islam’s Greatest Slaughter of Christians | Faith

Today, April 24, marks the “Great Crime,” that is, the genocide of Christians—mostly Armenians but also Assyrians—that took place under the Islamic Ottoman Empire throughout World War I.  Then, the Turks liquidated approximately 1.5 million Armenians and 300,000 Assyrians.  Similarly, in 1920, U.S. Senate Resolution 359 heard testimony that included evidence of “[m]utilation, violation, torture, and death [which] have left their haunting memories in a hundred beautiful Armenian valleys, and the traveler in that region is seldom free from the evidence of this most colossal crime of all the ages.”

In her memoir, Ravished ArmeniaAurora Mardiganian described being raped and thrown into a harem (consistent with Islam’s rules of war).  Unlike thousands of other Armenian girls who were discarded after being defiled, she managed to escape. In the city of Malatia, she saw 16 Christian girls crucified: “Each girl had been nailed alive upon her cross,” she wrote, “spikes through her feet and hands, only their hair blown by the wind, covered their bodies.”  Such scenes were portrayed in the 1919 documentary film Auction of Souls, some of which is based on Mardiganian’s memoirs.

Whereas the genocide is largely acknowledged in the West, one of its primary if not fundamental causes is habitually overlooked: religion.  The genocide is usually articulated through a singularly secular paradigm, one that factors only things that are intelligible from a secular, Western point of view—such as identity and gender politics, nationalism, and territorial disputes. Such an approach does little more than project modern Western perspectives onto vastly different civilizations and eras.

War, of course, is another factor that clouds the true face of the genocide.  Because these atrocities mostly occurred during World War I, so the argument goes, they are ultimately a reflection of just that—war, in all its chaos and destruction, and nothing more.  But as Winston Churchill, who described the massacres as an “administrative holocaust,” correctly observed, “The opportunity [WWI] presented itself for clearing Turkish soil of a Christian race.”  Even Adolf Hitler had pointed out that “Turkey is taking advantage of the war in order to thoroughly liquidate its internal foes, i.e., the indigenous Christians, without being thereby disturbed by foreign intervention.”

It’s worth noting that little has changed; in the context of war in Iraq, Syria, and Libya, the first to be targeted for genocide have been Christians and other minorities.  But even the most cited factor of the Armenian Genocide, “ethnic identity conflict,” while legitimate, must be understood in light of the fact that, historically, religion accounted more for a person’s identity than language or heritage.   This is daily demonstrated throughout the Islamic world today, where Muslim governments and Muslim mobs persecute Christian minorities who share the same race, ethnicity, language, and culture; minorities who are indistinguishable from the majority—except, of course, for being non-Muslims, or “infidels.”  As one Armenian studies professor asks, “If it [the Armenian Genocide] was a feud between Turks and Armenians, what explains the genocide carried out by Turkey against the Christian Assyrians at the same time?”  Indeed, according to a 2017 book, Year of the Sword: The Assyrian Christian Genocide:

To understand how the historic genocide of Armenians and Assyrians is representative of the modern-day plight of Christians under Islam, one need only read the following words written in 1918 by President Theodore Roosevelt; however, read “Armenian” as “Christian” and “Turkish” as  “Islamic,” as supplied in brackets:  Indeed, if we “fail to deal radically” with the “horror” currently being visited upon millions of Christians around the Islamic world—which in some areas reached genocidal proportions—we “condone it” and had better cease talking “mischievous nonsense” of a utopian world of peace and tolerance.  Put differently, silence is always the ally of those who would liquidate the “other.”  In 1915, Adolf Hitler rationalized his genocidal plans, which he implemented some three decades later, when he rhetorically asked: “Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?”  And who among today’s major politicians speaks—let alone does anything—about the ongoing annihilation of Christians by Muslims, most recently (but not singularly) seen in the Easter Sunday church bombings of Sri Lanka that left over 300 dead?

Note: See author’s recent book, Sword and Scimitar: Fourteen Centuries of War between Islam and the West, for more on Turks and Armenians — including how the first “genocide” of Armenians at the hands of Turks actually began one-thousand years ago, in the year 1019.

Donald Trump Offers Aid to Rebuild Notre Dame and Flint and Puerto Rico Ask What About Us?

The glow of flames can be seen through the windows of Notre Dame as fire ravaged the centuries-old cathedral in Paris April 15, 2019. Photo: Associated Press Five years have gone by, some 1,825 days, since the people of Flint, Mich., were doomed to a life with no clean water, with no clear end in sight. ( Nestle just pledged to continue providing bottled water for the town at least through August of this year.) And it’s been more than 18 months since Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, killing nearly 3,000 people , destroying much of the infrastructure and leaving much of the island U.S. territory still without adequate power. It remains a struggle for both the people of Flint and Puerto Rico to get the federal funds needed to make full recoveries, and so it was that on Tuesday, the day after flames ravaged France’s historic Notre Dame cathedral, some found irony in the speed with which the U.S. pledged to come through with cash to support efforts to rebuild the almost-1,000-year-old edifice. They and many others ( #Flint was trending much of the day on Twitter) were reacting to news announced by Donald Trump’s administration that the U.S. would be sending aid to France to assist in the rebuilding of Notre Dame. As White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders put it, according to The Hill, the U.S. will offer “assistance in the rehabilitation of this irreplaceable symbol of Western civilization.” On the same day, word came in that Flint was receiving a remaining $77.7 million in federal funding to assist in that community now almost five-year-long battle to again have clean water flowing through its taps. But as MLive pointed out, rather than being new monies to help speed progress along: The funds are from a $120 million federal and state loan granted to Flint in March 2017 by the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act of 2016. The funds support several Flint water infrastructure projects. And as NPR reports, funding for Puerto Rico is at at standstill due to infighting among federal lawmakers on the Hill. So, it would seem that critics aren’t so much questioning whether the U.S. should put dollars into remaking Notre Dame as much as voicing that old saying: Charity, or, in this case, taxpayer-funded legislative aid, should perhaps begin at home.

Essential Oils for Cough: Top 7 Oils to Help You Find Relief – Dr. Axe

Dealing with a cough? Try these top 7 essential oils for cough to find relief rather than over-the-counter cough suppressants.

Along with the common cold, the flu and other respiratory conditions typically comes a cough that keeps you up at night and limits your ability to breathe with ease. Although so many people suffer from a cough every year, many aren’t aware of the natural remedies that are truly effective. There are several essential oils for cough that have antispasmodic, expectorant, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Like my recommended essential oils for colds, these oils serve as a safe and effective way to get rid of your cough and other symptoms of a respiratory condition for good.

According to research published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, over-the-counter (OTC) cough suppressants are of no benefit for children and shouldn’t be used by children who are under the age of 6 years old. On top of that, the benefits for adults are likely minimal. Many people turn to codeine to relieve their coughs, but did you know that codeine is a narcotic that can cause withdrawal symptoms like other opiates when it’s overused? Plus, studies show that in adults codeine and antihistamines have no effect on cough.

So many people are desperate to find a more effective remedy for their coughs. Try these essential oils for coughs that work to address the cause of your cough while simultaneously loosening mucus, relaxing your muscles and reducing cough intensity.

  • 10 Plants That Will Help Attract Bees to Your Garden in the Spring – One Green PlanetOne Green Planet

10 Plants That Will Help Attract Bees to Your Garden in the Spring – One Green PlanetOne Green Planet

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, cross-pollination from bees and other pollinators assist at least 30 percent of the world’s crops and 90 percent of wild plants. Without bees to pollinate plants, many would perish (food crops included).  If we’d like to keep berries, apples, onion, carrots, avocados, and many other foods, we need to start caring about bees. Bees are magnificent creatures, who not only pollinate food for

Bees are magnificent creatures that not only pollinate food for all but also serve as a main indicator of the state of the environment on whole. Declining populations should be a huge indication that something is unbalanced and wrong. Between humans spraying pesticides on crops to habitat loss and climate change, bees are at risk. If bees go extinct, so will humans, along with just about every other species on the planet.

Now, more than ever, it is important that we try to be as kind to bees as possible and give them an opportunity to visit our yards. Along with all of the other things you can do to help the bees, planting a garden is a great place to start. Even if you only have enough space for a container garden, you can “plant for the bees” by making it as organic as possible! Try planting these flowers and herbs this spring to not only add beauty to your home but attract our buzzing friends!

    1. Borage

Known as the “starflower” and the “bee bush,” bees love this medicinal herb! Borage is a bright blue, star-shaped flower that will bring beauty to any garden (and the bees along with it). This super plant is sure to have the bees buzzing!

In the spring, catnip grows around to be around two to four feet tall and sports white or lavender colored flowers, attracting cats and bees alike! If you grow this around your garden, it’ll be likely that you will not only attract bees but butterflies and other pollinators.

    4. Flowering Currant

These bright pink flowers draw in bees and butterflies. They are not only gorgeous, but their fragrance entices the bees to stay a while and take its pollen. This flower will bloom in early spring, which is perfect to help the bees rejuvenate after the winter months.

    shutterstock_600480731Maleo/Shutterstock

Crocuses are early bloomers which are perfect for bees that visit your yard! These purple/blue beauties, tend to come up at the end of winter when the weather is still a tad on the colder side. Bulbs for these flowers are usually planted in the fall and the flowers grace us with their presence come March, depending on where you live of course. These flowers are super easy to maintain, so this is a great flower if you don’t necessarily have the green-ist of thumbs yet!

Pussy Willows are also great for bees thanks to the fact they are early bloomers and have pollen ready for the bees at the very beginning of spring.

    7. Echinacea

These lovely flowers come in all different colors and are known as, “the cone flower,” due to their shape. These flowers are perennials and unfortunately bloom later in the season.

Sunflowers are one of the best flowers to plant for bees. They provide quality pollen and nectar for bees and seeds for birds, squirrels, and other wildlife. After the chance of frost is gone, go ahead and plant these seeds directly into the soil. You can also start the seeds indoors and wait until after the chance of frost is past to plant them outside.

    9. Lilacs

    shutterstock_402366895fotolotos/Shutterstock

Lilacs are a great treat for bees as they produce both pollen and nectar. Lilacs have bright purple flowers that grow in bunches, making it easier for bees to graze from one blossom to the next. The nectar provides the bee with much-needed energy, while the mixture with the pollen is a necessity for growing larvae back at the hive.

    10. Hyacinth

Hyacinths come in all different colors (i.e. pink, purple, white, etc.) and are especially bright colored and fragrant. These flowers provide nourishing nectar, which is why these flowers are a win for the bees.

Remember, when planting the above plants, stay away from hybrid varieties and keep your garden organic, i.e. don’t spray chemicals. Besides planting a garden, there are actually a ton of different ways to get active for bees! Try setting up a bee hotel, creating a bee bath, and planting wildflowers in your yard rather than grass lawns  to keep the bees coming back! Don’t have a yard? Simply try to buy organic and local as much as you can and spread the word about how important bees are to the planet around your community. Education and kind action can change the world, especially for bees.

Schools forced to install knife arches at the gates as stabbing epidemic grips Wild West Britain

Police have also temporarily been granted increased stop search powers in south London . Met Police officers will also have the power to stop and search on the streets — without proving reasonable grounds to suspect that person is carrying a weapon.  Knife arches are going to be used at schools across south London in a bid to tackle the growing problem of knife crime in the capital . The latest crackdown on weapon carrying has been introduced in Lambeth, Wandsworth and Merton in south London.  Scotland Yard is desperately trying to beat back the surging knife crime trend — which saw a 17-year-old boy stabbed “six times” in broad daylight over the weekend.  Knife arches will be introduced in schools across the three south London boroughs to tackle the growing amount of youth violence.

    KNIFE ARCHES IN EFFECT

Chief Superintendent and Basic Command Unit (BCU) for south west London Sally Benatar said: “Knife arches will be in place at schools over the next two weeks and officers have increased reassurance patrols around the Balham area in light of last Wednesday’s stabbing.  “We prioritise effective safeguarding, and our schools officers are working hard to protect and educate our young people in the dangers of carrying knives. “Previously cops had to prove reasonable grounds to suspect a person is carrying a weapon to stop and search them. But now officers in parts of south London will be able to stop and search people in the street for no reason at all.
