    Find the American Voice

How important is the radio in your car, home, office or anywhere?  It was very important at one time and the evenings entertainment too.

For decades, AM radio has felt as commonplace as a utility, such a basic fact of life that it’s taken for granted. But that’s changing: Across America, AM radio stations are dwindling in number and profitability, as better-sounding FM signals become cheaper to broadcast and would-be listeners turn to the internet for entertainment.

Yet even in decline, it has a strength that politicians and media insiders who want to understand America would do well to heed. In 2019, thousands of AM stations remain on the air, many of them thriving—in part because they serve unique sets of people whose voices aren’t always heard loudly. For generations, it was considerably cheaper to buy or start an AM station than any other form of mass media, making ownership more accessible to people of color, immigrants, non-English speakers and those with political views outside the mainstream. Without the line-of-sight restrictions of FM radio, AM radio can also cover vast geographic areas, and so remains a staple of rural media. Even now, if you tune into the right frequency on a clear summer night, you can hear a broadcast from half a continent away—listening in on the kinds of conversations that shape identity and politics far outside the Beltway.

For devotees eager to preserve the format, AM has a would-be savior in Washington: Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai. Better known  as a free-market “net neutrality” deregulator, Pai launched an effort to revitalize AM several years ago, shortly after becoming an FCC commissioner. Growing up in Parsons, Kansas, in the 1970s and ’80s, Pai has said he listened to AM radio with his parents, who had come to the United States from India with “little more than $10 in their pockets and a radio.” But purists are concerned that in his efforts to save AM radio, Pai might be inadvertently killing off what makes it unique, potentially curtailing long-distance AM broadcasters and moving more of its broadcasts to FM.

Over the past few months, Politico Magazine has drawn on radio ratings and conversations with broadcasting experts to identify some of the most distinct voices on the AM dial. They include a sheep farmer who reports on the agricultural industry for a vast rural audience; an icon of inner-city Baltimore who inspired a character on “The Wire”; and one of the only on-air personalities who broadcasts in the Navajo language. Some are conservative, some are liberal, some avoid politics altogether. In these photos, by Politico’s M. Scott Mahaskey, we glimpse what is being lost when AM radio stations disappear: not just call signs, but places where community is built.

  • Survival Gear Review: Hydroviv Water Filter – Survival Cache

Survival Gear Review: Hydroviv Water Filter – Survival Cache

One of the key pillars to being prepared is having a good water plan. Water is key to life and clean water is key to good health. I have a lot of experience with water filters and have been experimenting with different water filtration methods for years both at my house and in the field. I recently decided to look into a water filter made by a company best water filtercalled Hydroviv and compare it to other filters that are commercially available on the market. As many of you know, I really am not a big fan of granular activated carbon filters (GAC). I know that this is the worst way to filter water and over time, water will create pathways around the carbon no matter how tight it is packed.

Contributed by By Mark, Former Marine Reconnaissance Team Leader, Marine Infantry Officer, Cross Fit Coach, Water Expert, and Survivalist.

Activated coconut carbon filters works with a process called adsorption, this happens as water pollutant molecules attach themselves inside the pore structure of the carbon as they pass through. Typical contaminate particulate sizes that can be removed by carbon filters range from 0.5 to 50 microns. The particulate size that the filter removes will generally be used as part of the filter description. The efficacy, per NSF/ANSI Standards, of a carbon filter is also based upon the flow rate regulation. When the water is allowed to flow through the filter at a slower rate, the contaminants are exposed to the filter media for a longer amount of time. So, the longer it takes for the water to pass by the carbon, the better the level of filtration (Your 10 second Brita filter time is not removing anything, sorry to let you in on this little secret).

Activated coconut carbon filters are most effective at removing chlorine, particles such as sediment, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), taste and odor from water. They are not very effective at removing trace minerals & salts, which is why you will sometimes get a high TDS reading on water that has went through a water filter system. TDS meters…you know the $1.25 ones from China that ZeroWater gives you with their water pitcher, are not a good way to determine water quality. TDS measures trace minerals & salts in the water. TDS does not measure other contaminants like fluoride, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals (lead), chemicals (chlorine), pesticides (RoundUp), herbicides, hormones, & more. That is why if you have really read ZeroWater’s marketing material, they never really say that TDS is bad or a health concern. They just say that will get it down to zero. I am much more concerned about chemicals & metals than I am about trace minerals (which I want in my water) which might cause a little bit higher TDS reading. If you really want to test your water quality, you need to send it to a lab and have it checked out. It will cost between $100 to $200, which is cheaper than cancer. Don’t rely on a chinese TDS meter, they are a joke.

So I was a little disappointed to learn the Hydroviv makes their filters by dumping loose packed carbon into their filter based on some third party tap water testing on a website dating ashydroviv water filter testing filtration lead far back as 2015. I was also a little skeptical about their independent testing…which there is none. I mean, how can you have a filter that claims to remove lead but your filters have not been independently tested based on the design of your filter and how the water flows through & interacts with the carbon media inside the system. Just because you find a filter media (activated coconut carbon or KDF media) that reduces or removes a contaminant, you still need to have an independent lab test your design and filter and prove your theory for the consumer.

If I live in a old house (which I do) and we have old pipes both in our house and in our neighborhood that are leaching lead into my water. I want to know how much lead your filter is going to remove, for how long, and is your filter certified by a 3rd party. Unfortunately Hydroviv does none of these. They offer no data on the amount of lead reduction their filters achieve, they have no capacity testing to tell you how long their filters work for, and they have not been independently reviewed or certified to NSF/ANSI standards so buyer beware when it comes to these filters. I will compare Hydroviv vs 2 other commercially available water filters just so can see the difference between a quality home filtration product and what I think are jokes.

Epic Smart Shield – Epic Water Filters is a company that I have reviewed several of their products and like other water amazon woder water filter reviewfiltration companies that I like (Berkey, MSR) they use solid carbon block filters. Everything that I have read, all of the testing that I done, all of the data that I have reviewed says that carbon blocks are superior to GAC filters. Yes, the Epic Smart Shield is a few bucks more but when you dive into the details of the products the Smart Shield is worth every penny. Also, the Epic Smart Shield is an American made carbon block filter that has been tested and certified to 3 different NSF/ANSI drinking water standards by an independent laboratory. Unfortunately, Hydroviv & Woder decided against independent third party testing leaving their customers to worry if their filters are really working properly. As you can see from this picture, I cut open both the Woder and the Epic Smart Shield and put them side by side. Think about trying to get water through that thick carbon block filter vs. the loose packed carbon sand. You can shake the Epic Smart Shield all day along and you will not hear it make any noise. 🙂 It is solid brick of carbon. Here is a quick overview of the three different under the sink water filter products.

Woder 10k-DC vs. Hydroviv vs. Epic Smart Shield

Made from solid carbon block filter?
Woder 10k-DC: NO (GAC like Brita)
    Hydroviv: NO (GAC like Brita)
    Epic Smart Shield: YES

Independently Certified to NSF/ANSI 42 Standard (Chlorine, Taste, Odor):
    Woder 10k-DC: NO
    Hydroviv: NO
    Epic Smart Shield: YES

Independently Certified to NSF/ANSI 53 Standard (Health Effects like Lead & Metals):
    Woder 10k-DC: NO
    Hydroviv: NO
    Epic Smart Shield: YES

Independently Certified to NSF/ANSI 401 Standard (Trace Pharmaceuticals & Emerging Contaminants):
    Woder 10k-DC: NO
    Hydroviv: NO
    Epic Smart Shield: YES

    Tested to Remove Bacteria?
    Woder 10k-DC: NO
    Hydroviv: NO
    Epic Smart Shield: YES

    Tested to Remove PFOA/PFOS?
    Woder 10k-DC: NO
    Hydroviv: NO
    Epic Smart Shield: YES

    Tested to Remove Glysophate (RoundUp)?
    Woder 10k-DC: NO
    Hydroviv: NO
    Epic Smart Shield: YES

Comes with a dedicated faucet version?
    Woder 10k-DC: NO
    Hydroviv: NO
    Epic Smart Shield: YES

Bottomline: Do your research on a company or product before you buy a water filtration product. There is a lot of junk out there, especially all of the Chinese junk on Amazon. Dive into their data or lack of data. Look for companies that show third party testing & certifications.  Read their reviews and customer service experience.

  • What Defines A “Best Survival Gear?”

What Defines A “Best Survival Gear?”

What defines something as the “best survival gear”? What would be the criteria you would follow if you were considering choosing some of the best gear that would actually help you survive? Ever wondered about that?! Well, with the way the world is fast changing, you might want to consider it as one of your priorities in case you still don’t have a survival kit in place.

Accidents are common place; disasters are becoming an integral part of our morning cup of tea or coffee (thanks to the far-fetched reach of media)! With the growth of technology and the widespread hands of media being able to access information from all over the world, getting to know disasters that affect people in the tiniest of islands, in the farthest corners of the world, is no longer a surprise! So, how prepared are you in case nature or man decides your city or town as the target for the next disaster?!

I remember watching a movie some time back…there was this scene of utter chaos that occurred because of a hoax call of a bomb being planted in a huge residential apartment. A man and his wife were desperately trying to save all that they could, only to finally realize that their two kids were still sleeping through it all and they hadn’t even thought about them in their chaotic efforts to save their so-called “assets”!

The scene was meant to comically present human reaction to unexpected disaster situations. As much as it was funny to watch in a movie, a real situation where we actually run around trying to react to the situation could actually cost us or our dear ones our lives!! So we come back to our question of the need to being prepared and that invariably leads to the question of what would make the best survival gear to help us in similar situations!

Browsing through the internet, there is a whole list of gear that would be defined as the best for any or every situation. This is just another market place, where people are trying to sell what they deem might be your best companion during a calamity. But as a customer, what criteria would you assign to make your choice? Difficult to decide – right?! Especially, if you haven’t really been through a tough situation before; you could end up ignoring some important items or aspects. And a time of calamity is the worst time you could go hunting for things you actually need! Technology might not be readily available right when you need it; and probably this would be the best time to realize that money can’t buy everything!!

Well, instead of thinking about the worst let’s see how we can be prepared for the worst! Your everyday life is a place where your basics take a backseat, because they are part of your routine! Although, the fact is, your daily rush is basically intended to pay your bills and take care of your needs, these have become so ingrained in your day to day life; you hardly give a thought to it! It just happens and you just move on. You don’t really spend time thinking of your food, clothing or shelter; while the truth is your job and all activities still revolve around it.

A disaster changes this perspective; what was routine becomes a priority! All the running about you were doing as part of your day to day life takes a backseat and you focus on your basics as the top priority; and you do it consciously! How to manage your food till the disaster dies down, how to keep your family protected from the elements, how to safeguard your family till help arrives and how to reach out for help!

Your decisions, your needs, your priorities all take a different turn! There is more uncertainty in your life that you ever thought there would be! The ups and downs of your daily efforts could crash any stock exchange in a few milliseconds! But that is the reality of a disaster!! So what would help you in such a situation? Being prepared, of course, and having the right things in the right place and at the right time; no doubt! But what makes this list of right things?

Look at your basic needs – what do you want the most if you have to leave the secured environment of your home behind? What would you need to survive, in case your home is the only shelter you have and moving out of its secure environment is near impossible? How would you manage in case your technology dies down, your money can’t buy things, and your supermarket or grocers just disappears or drowns? How would you survive and ensure your family is not harmed?

Analyzing these questions could help you zero-in on the best survival gear for your needs. Besides the basic food, water, clothing, and shelter; you need to think of tools, equipments, accessories, and gears you would need. For instance, what if the power supply is affected? What if you need to build temporary shelters? What if you need to abandon your home and move away to safety? What if you have to go back to our ancestral ways and depend on fire for light, heat and protection?!

Batteries, chargers, communication systems like radio, temporary shelters like tents, small tools like pocket knives, mini tool sets, pocket chainsaws, fire-lighters, torches, first-aid supplies, water purification systems, and the list continues… Getting the right equipment and gear for your needs requires some amount of analysis of your situation, your location, and of course your priorities and needs.

A family with young ones and toddlers cannot be prepared the same way as a family with young adults. It is not just lesser help to get things done but also more care and more dependency on your shoulders! Taking care of sick people and aged adults can take a lot of planning and preparation. Knowing whom to call for help, where to move during trouble, and how to stay out of trouble are all important information you need to have before disasters strike!

So, let’s get started! Get all the things you need in one place. Make your survival kit and get a checklist of all the equipments you need. If after all the list has been analyzed and ticked, you are sure that you and your family would be safe; well then, your kit has the best survival gear you would need to help see you through a calamity!

Of course, there is only one way you will ever know if what you have is the best survival gear – use it during an actual disaster!

Washing Dishes Helps Decrease Your Stress Levels, According To Study

Before reading this article further, I have one question for you: Do you have loads of dirty plates and pans on the sink right now? Be honest. We won’t judge. If you answered yes, well, don’t worry because you’re not alone. I have some, too! In fact, washing dishes is totally my least favorite chore to do.

That said, a recent study is telling us that washing dishes can actually decrease a person’s stress level. As long as they do the chore “mindfully,” that is!

This is according to a group of reseachers from Florida State University who observed 51 students wash dishes.

Before they began, half of the students were asked to read “a short mindfulness dishwashing passage” while the remaining ones read “a short descriptive dishwashing passage,” reported a SouthernLiving article.

    The mindful passage partly read:

“While washing the dishes one should only be washing the dishes. This means that while washing the dishes one should be completely aware of the fact that one is washing the dishes. At first glance, that might seem a little silly. Why put so much stress on a simple thing? But that’s precisely the point. The fact that I am standing there and washing is a wondrous reality. I’m being completely myself, following my breath, conscious of my presence, and conscious of my thoughts and actions. There’s no way I can be tossed around mindlessly like a bottle slapped here and there on the waves.”

Adam Hanley, author of the study and a doctoral candidate in FSU College of Education’s Counseling/School Psychology program, commented:

“I was particularly interested in how the mundane activities in life could be used to promote a mindful state and, thus, increase overall sense of well-being.”

So yes, the researchers are telling us that people who ‘mindfully’ washed their dishes (meaning those who focused on smelling the soap, feeling the water temperature, etc) increased their feelings of inspiration by 25% and decreased their nervousness levels by 27%.

“It appears that an everyday activity approached with intentionality and awareness may enhance the state of mindfulness,” wrote the authors of the study.

  • Notre Dame Cathedral Fire: All Three Rose Windows Survived

Notre Dame Cathedral Fire: All Three Rose Windows Survived

The fire that raged through Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Monday cause a massive amount of damage to the iconic building, though several of the structure’s historical features have remained intact. Some of those features include the cathedral’s three rose windows, which are massive round stained-glass windows that sit over the cathedral’s three main portals. They date back to the 13th century and are one of the building’s many focal points. There are three windows — North, South and West — with the North Rose having been built first around 1250. The largest is the South window, which measures around 60 feet high. All of the windows feature Biblical scenes from the Old and New Testaments, stories of the lives of the Twelve Apostles and the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the cathedral’s website calls them “one of the greatest masterpieces of Christianity.” (Photo: vadim kozlovsky / Shutterstock.com) Footage of the inside of the cathedral taken after the blaze shows that the windows have remained, as well as many of the church’s pews. “The large rose windows don’t appear to have suffered catastrophic damage,” Franck Riester, France’s culture minister, said in a news conference in Paris on Tuesday, via the New York Times . Firefighters this morning declared success in their battle to extinguish the flames that engulfed the building. https://t.co/vrz8KstBE1 pic.twitter.com/mv7PGg6Jsv — ABC News (@ABC) April 16, 2019 Along with the windows, the cathedral’s Great Organ, which sits in front of the West Rose, also remains intact, as does its main sanctuary, facade and twin bell towers. The largest of the cathedral’s bells dates to 1681 and has been rung at several important events in history, including the end of the two world wars. Several historical artifacts were also saved after the blaze began, including the Crown of Thorns, believed to have been worn by Jesus Christ on the cross, the Tunic of Saint Louis, which is said to have belonged to King Louis IX, and other works. The artifacts will be transferred to the Louvre Museum for safekeeping, Riester said on French radio on Tuesday. The fate of other items, including a fragment of the True Cross, the cross that Jesus was crucified on, and one of the Holy Nails, believed to be from that cross, is unclear. Riester also noted that several of the cathedral’s large paintings appear to be unaffected but may have sustained water damage and have been harmed by smoke. • 12 reasons to plant a clover lawn | TreeHugger

12 reasons to plant a clover lawn | TreeHugger

The grass lawn’s glory days are over – here’s why we love a clover lawn instead. In the etymological timeline of the word lawn , we have laune from the 1540s, meaning “glade, open space in a forest or between woods.” I can picture that; meadow-like clearings in the trees where low wild plants are growing, replete with messy little blossoms and scampering woodland creatures. Today’s lawn does not look like that. No, today’s lawn is a strange construction that is not very natural at all. It’s more of a rampant carpet that is ravenous for water, demands an array of synthetic chemicals, and requires constant taming by means of a lawnmower. How did this become the ideal? The birth of the modern lawn may have more to do with the sales of lawn-maintenance products (think herbicides) than common sense – a point we’ve been kvetching about for years here on TreeHugger. In the U.S., we have 40.5 million acres of lawn; according to NASA, all that lawn uses 60 million acre-feet (the volume of one acre of surface area with a depth of one foot) of mostly drinkable water a year. (See how to cure lawn lust in 6 minutes for more on that.) And for what? We can’t even eat it! Lat year we wrote about planting clover instead of grass (see related stories below) and since it’s getting to be lawn season, I figured it was time to fire up the clover cheerleading section again. So without further ado, why you should consider kicking grass to the curb and try planting (or mixing in) lovely clover instead. 1. It is drought-resistant Because of clover’s deep roots, it needs much less water than does grass. As the Farmer’s Almanac notes, “Clover is an extremely drought-resistant plant and will keep its cool-green color even during the hottest and driest parts of summer.” 2. It is inexpensive Clover seed is cheap; the average cost is about $4.00 per 4000 square feet. You will also spend a lot less on water, products, and maintenance. And for those who have been fighting clover all along: Stop fighting, let it grow, and it’s yours for free. 3. It requires no fertilization Clover is a legume, and as such, takes nitrogen from the air and sinks it into the ground as a useful fertilizer. If you are adding clover to a lawn, it will work to fertilize the existing lawn; on its own, it requites no additional fertilizer. 4. It blooms! Who would want a monochromatic carpet of grass when you could have one sprinkled with a starscape of flowers? 5. It attracts pollinating insects Those blooms bring bees, and heaven knows the bees need our help. Honeybees love clover (does “clover blossom honey” ring a bell?); planting clover is a nice assist. 6. But It can be bee-free too That said, if you are worried about bee stings, there are options. Even though honeybees rarely sting when unprovoked and away from the hive, you can opt for a micro clover or simply mow the clover when it’s in bloom. 7. It grows in poor soil Poor soil is no problem for clover, much due to the fact that it supplies its own nutrients with that nifty nitrogen trick. 8. It resists pet urine While grass lawns are susceptible to brown spots from pet urine, clover is not effected by it. 9. It resists blight and mildew Mildew, fungus, blights … these things hurt grass lawns. making them unsightly and in need of treatment. Clover is not subject to these troubles. 10. It doesn’t need herbicides Since clover out-competes broadleaf weeds, you won’t need to douse the soil with toxic weed-killing things, hurray! 11. It doesn’t need pesticides Clover also stands up well to insect pests, so no need to to douse the soil with toxic insect-killing things as well, hurray! 12. It rarely has to be mowed Depending on what kind of clover you plant and what look you like, clover can be mowed very infrequently – by some accounts, as little as twice a season. I mean, maybe you like spending your weekends pushing a loud, exhaust-sputtering machine around, but if not, clover has your back. (And your feet too, see photo below.)

  • ‘Captain America’ actor says he will ‘cut ties’ with Tom Brady if he’s really a Trump supporter

‘Captain America’ actor says he will ‘cut ties’ with Tom Brady if he’s really a Trump supporter

Hollywood actor Chris Evans, best known for portraying Captain America, hates President Donald Trump so much that he said he would “cut ties” with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady if he really supported the president.

Evans made the comments in an interview published Wednesday in the Hollywood Reporter. He was responding to a question about whether he would be willing to portray the iconic NFL superstar in a biopic.

    “I don’t know,” Evans responded.

“I really hope he’s not a Trump supporter,” he explained. “I’m just hoping he’s one of those guys that maybe supported him and now regrets it. Maybe he thought it was going to be different — and even that bothers me — but maybe there’s a chance now he just thinks Trump’s an absolute dumb shit, which he is.”

Brady had been rumored to be a Trump supporter since someone spotted a MAGA hat in the player’s locker.

“If he doesn’t, if he’s still on that Trump train, I might have to cut ties,” Evans concluded. “It’s really tough.”

Brady has not confirmed or denied rumors that he supports the president’s policies, and has only commented that he’s known Trump for many years and that they are friendly.

“Why is that such a big deal? I don’t understand that?” he said in an interview in 2017.

Evans is an outspoken liberal and has used his twitter account to attack the president as well as advocate for liberal causes. He says that he is “retiring” from the role of Captain America in order to pursue other roles.

“The Avengers: Endgame,” with Evans’ last portrayal of Captain America, opens in theaters on April 26.

  • Gold – In a Complex Corrective Structure, which will be its Long-term Fate?

Gold – In a Complex Corrective Structure, which will be its Long-term Fate?

In our last Silver analysis (read more), we talked about the potential rally and the corrective sequence that should finish soon. This time, we analyse Gold’s technical situation for the following weeks.

    The Big Picture

The golden metal started a bullish cycle in November 2015, when the price touched $1,045.4 and finished at $1,376.5. After its completion, GC began to develop a complex corrective structure, which still is active. The long-term vision for Gold calls for more upsides. The underlying condition for the next impulsive movement is for it to be similar in length to the first bullish leg.

    Following the Bearish Sequence

Once GC has reached the $1,349.8 level on Feb. 19, the golden metal started a corrective sequence as an A-B-C structure. The Gold’s daily chart shows that a wave C is in progress.

    Equal Legs Completion

As said in the previous analysis, the second leg completion does not imply a reversal movement. On the 4-hour chart, in the internal wave C, we observe that the second leg has reached 100% of equal waves. But this is not enough to determine what the next move could be.

    What Next?

The internal segment which topped at $1,314.7, is developing a consolidation formation, which we foresee should be a complex structure. We expect that the bullish move will be limited within the last swing zone ($1,285.6), then, starting a new bearish move. Short-term, our bearish target is $1,264.3.

Remember that the price is not compelled to move as our forecast implies. The charts released corresponds to the Elliott Wave Theory application.
