On Saturday, a research organization released video of Muslim children calling for beheading, torture and martyrdom at a school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The video, including translation, shows Muslim children at the Muslim American Society Islamic Center singing and reading incendiary poetry at an event on April 22, 2019, MEMRI reports:

On April 22, 2019, the Muslim American Society Islamic Center in Philadelphia (MAS Philly) uploaded a video of an “Ummah Day” celebration to its Facebook page in which young children wearing Palestinian scarves sang: “Glorious steeds call us and lead us [to] the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The blood of martyrs protects us… Take us, oh ships, until we liberate our lands… until we reach our shores and crush the treacherous ones… Flow, oh rivers of martyrs!”

The video also shows a young girl reciting a poem advocating decapitation and torture:

“We will sacrifice our souls without hesitation. We will chop off their heads, and we will liberate the sorrowful and exalted Al-Aqsa Mosque. We will lead the army of Allah fulfilling His promise, and we will subject them to eternal torture.”

On Sunday, the Muslim American Society issued a statement disavowing both the video and the content of the school’s event:

Our investigation revealed that the school that organized the event on April 17, 2019 is a separate entity renting space from MAS Philadelphia. The school board has informed us that it has taken immediate actions and dismissed the person in charge of the program. In addition, they will form a local commission to aid in sensitivity training and proper supervision for future programs.

  • Choice’s four tips for stacking your dishwasher for a cleaner wash  | Daily Mail Online

Choice’s four tips for stacking your dishwasher for a cleaner wash  | Daily Mail Online

While everyone has a different technique for stacking the dishwasher, there are a few foolproof tips that guarantee sparkling dishes every time.

So to make things a little easier, consumer advocacy group Choice Australia has shared some of their best advice for stacking and achieving the best clean possible.

From what materials to wash and where to place dirty pots to how to use dishwashing tablets, these are the best tips they had to offer.

While everyone has a different technique for stacking the dishwasher, there are a few foolproof tips that guarantee sparkling dishes every time

    1. Why you should never place wood, aluminium or copper in the dishwasher

While most things are safe to stack – including everything that has ‘dishwasher safe’ written on it – there are a few exceptions.

You should never put anything made of wood in a dishwasher, namely chopping boards, rolling pins and wooden spoons because the material absorbs every odour and flavour circulating from other dirty dishes.

Good knives and fine china should also be avoided because the water pressure and corrosive detergent can blunt your knives and ruin the detailing on those previous pieces of crockery.

Anything that contains a ‘reactive metal’ – which is prone to corroding over time – is also best washed by hand.

That means anything with aluminium and copper – including non-stick pans – should be hand washed.

While most things are safe to stack inside the appliance – including everything that has the words ‘dishwasher safe’ written on it – there are a few exceptions

    2. Why you don’t need to bother pre-washing dishes

Your favourite dishwashing tablets should have enough power to remove all manner of surface stains without you having to thoroughly wash your plates beforehand, but you should scrape all food scraps in the bin before putting them in the dishwasher.

This prevents clogging the filter, which will only make it harder for your dishwasher to do its job.

Speaking of the filter, it should be cleaned once a week to stop unnecessary build-up.

    3. Why you should place the dirtiest dishes in the middle

Placement is key for getting a cleaner wash every time.

Plastics should go on the top shelf to reduce the risk of melting, as should glass to prevent it shattering.

Because the spinning fan can sometimes miss the corners of the dishwasher it’s best to place very dirty pots and pans in the middle of the stackable shelves for maximum effectiveness.

Also make sure all plates and bowls face downward to avoid dirty water sitting in it and don’t stack them right on top of each other.

Leaving a gap will ensure water and soap can get between the dishes to wash them.

When the wash is complete open the dishwasher as soon as possible and pull out the trays. The heat from the wash will dry the dishes faster.

    4. Why you shouldn’t put some dishwashing tablets in the dispenser

If you’re using anything with the name ‘3-in-1’ or ‘multi tab’ in it then it’s actually more beneficial to put them at the bottom of your machine, not in the dispenser.

They’re not designed to be placed there because they won’t be released in the same way a single brick tablet would.

The 3-in-1 tablets have a section to them that are meant for the pre-wash stage but the dispenser doesn’t open until the main wash has begun, thus rendering 1/3 of the tablet null and void.

Researchers Find Cocaine In Every Single Shrimp Tested In England’s Waterways

When two British universities embarked on a study to analyze the presence of micropollutants in aquatic wildlife, they found something they surely didn’t expect.  Researchers from King’s College London and the University of Suffolk found illicit drugs like ketamine and cocaine in the inhabitants of Britain’s waterways. Though the study’s focus did include both illicit drugs and medicines in its quest to assess how consumer products are negatively affecting rivers, freshwaters, and natural environments, finding such drugs was still a shock.  The study, published in the journal Environmental International, revealed just how polluted these waters are — to the point that every single sample of freshwater shrimp (Gammarus pulex) contained trace amounts of cocaine.  “Such regular occurrence of illicit drugs in wildlife was surprising,” Dr. Leon Barron of King’s College confessed. “We might expect to see these in urban areas such as London, but not in smaller and more rural catchments.”  To begin the study, the team collected samples from five catchment areas and 15 various sites across Suffolk County. Rivers used as sample sites included the Alde, Box, Deben, Gipping, and Waveney.  Though cocaine was the only drug found in all collected samples, the presence of ketamine, valium, Xanax, pesticides, and other pharmaceuticals were certainly widespread among the tested shrimp as well.

Famed Photographer Sebastião Salgado Plants Two Million Trees With His Wife And 20 Years Later, Creates New Forest

Formerly barren land in Brazil is now thriving with hundreds of new flora and fauna thanks to the efforts of Sebastião Salgado and his wife Lélia.

Growing deforestation is a big issue for the sustainability of our environment. But individuals like famed photographer Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado and his wife Lélia are trying to save it. The Brazilian couple started a project to plant two million trees and now, 20 years later, the seeds have grown into a lush forest in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil.  It all started in 1994 when Salgado had just returned home from a traumatic project covering the devastations of the genocide in Rwanda. Looking to heal himself, Salgado decided to take a break by taking up the family farm which was located in the Minas Gerais area.  But what he saw there devastated him even more: what was once a rich forest had morphed into a severely damaged landscape due to rampant deforestation and disappearing wildlife.  “The land was as sick as I was — everything was destroyed,” Salgado toldThe Guardian.  The land, he said, was about only 0.5 percent covered in trees. However, the damaged environment sparked inspiration in Salgado’s wife Lélia, who came up with the idea to replant the forest.  What sounded like an impossible feat was realized in the founding of Instituto Terra, an environmental organization dedicated to the sustainable development of the area of the Valley of the River Roce just four years later.

Couple die in Mongolia of bubonic plague after eating raw marmot

A couple have died in Mongolia from bubonic plague after eating raw marmot.  The deaths of the Mongolian couple led to a quarantine that left tourists stranded for days.  The pair had eaten raw marmot meat and kidney and a six-day quarantine was imposed on May 1 following their deaths in Mongolia’s wester Bayan Olgii province bordering China and Russia.  The plague was responsible for millions of deaths in Europe and Asia in the 14th century.  Cases are very rare today but can be deadly unless sufferers are treated with antibiotics.  The couple had eaten the meat of the marmot, a type of rodent, as it was thought to be a remedy for good health, it was reported.  The quarantine has now been lifted, allowing tourists to leave the area.  Marmots are a known carrier of the plague bacteria and hunting them is illegal.  “After the quarantine not many people, even locals, were in the streets for fear of catching the disease,” Sebastian Pique, a US Peace Corps volunteer, told the AFP news agency.  The World Health Organization (WHO) said 118 people had come into contact with the couple and had to be isolated and administered antibiotics.  It was reported that dozens of tourists from Russia, Germany and the US were unable to leave the area for a period because of the quarantine.  The plague is usually transmitted from animals to humans via fleas and has a 30% to 60% fatality rate if left untreated.

  • When it comes to power in the workplace, 30 is the new 50

When it comes to power in the workplace, 30 is the new 50

We’re in the midst of two tectonic demographic shifts in the workplace that, at first glance, seem to be at odds with each other. We’re living longer and working longer–either by choice or necessity (it’s hard to finance a 30-year retirement with a 40-year career). The fastest-growing age demographic of employees in the workplace is 65 and older, which has experienced a 35% jump in numbers over the past half-decade. In fact, nearly half of the age-demographic increase in the number of people participating in the U.S. labor force between 2016 and 2026 is attributable to those 60 and older. So, many of us are surprised today to find ourselves at midlife and mid-career.

At the same time, there’s such a growing reliance on DQ (digital intelligence) that companies are desperate to hire and promote digital natives. Nearly 40% of Americans now report to a younger boss, and this will become the majority by 2025. Seven of the 10 most valuable companies in the world today are tech companies. The average employee age at giants like Facebook, Apple, and Google isn’t quite 30. And we’re seeing startup entrepreneurs in their early 20s become global disruption billionaires before they turn 30. Sixty may be the new 40 physically, but when it comes to power in the modern workplace, 30 is the new 50.

Some like to portray this as a generational war now that we have five generations in the workplace for the first time. I beg to differ. Because, based upon my experience over the past half-dozen years, I’ve seen how a symbiotic relationship between generations can be created–like an intergenerational potluck–to take companies to great heights.

Met Gala 2019: See What Celebrities Wore on the Red Carpet

It might still be taking place on the first Monday in May, but the Met Gala‘s 2019 edition might look a bit different: The biggest faux pas one can commit on the red carpet is to look chic. In the world of Camp, this year’s theme, chic is boring—and if there’s anything you should know about camp, well, it’s a refusal of boredom of all costs. As those who’ve been studying up can attest, it can be quite a difficult concept to grasp, but one that also seems guaranteed to be the gala’s most rewarding theme yet. (If you thought last year’s Catholicism theme was over-the-top, with Rihanna as the Pope and Jared Leto-turned-Jesus Christ, you might want to take a look at the campiest red carpet looks’ hall of fame.) With Gaga, leading the way, see Billy Porter, Harry Styles, Serena Williams, and more celebrities’ best efforts to “dethrone the serious,” here.

  • Gucci Relaunches Makeup Line By Embracing ‘Imperfect’ Smiles In New Campaign

Gucci Relaunches Makeup Line By Embracing ‘Imperfect’ Smiles In New Campaign

    Image via Gucci Beauty

While fashion and beauty labels are pivoting to become more diverse, Gucci is celebrating the quirks of its customers from the get-go. Last year, the luxury brand debuted a dedicated Instagram account celebrating contrasting beauty ideals across cultures and centuries, and it turns out that this set the stage for the relaunch of its inclusive makeup line.  Gucci has just reopened its beauty range, which it left off in 2014, with a striking campaign reminiscent of makeup ads from the 80s and 90s but with a twist.
Led by creative director Alessandro Michele, the Gucci Beauty relaunch campaign diverts from visuals of glamorous smiles with perfectly bleached teeth. Instead, you’ll see models with gappy grins and turned-down lips.  The graphics’ unconforming nature nods at Gucci’s new lipstick range of 58 whopping shades, available in three finishes: ‘Rouge à Lèvres Satin’ (satiny); ‘Rouge à Lèvres Voile’ (sheer); ‘Baume à Lèvres’ (in a translucent balm form).

While fans have applauded the campaign’s counter to beauty stereotypes, others are worried it might normalize unhealthy dental conditions.  “Either they need better self care or a better paying gig,” one Instagram user comments.  For the most part, however, customers are in awe of this creative direction. Fans claiming to have “imperfect” teeth resonate with the models, whereas others have pointed out that the average consumer would not have a completely aligned smile.  “I love this!” praises one customer. “As someone who is missing teeth of my own, I find it so empowering to see a luxury fashion brand embracing all smiles. To see my biggest insecurity be embraced means so much.”  “Not everyone can afford braces or fake teeth,” another chimes in. “Fortunately, I have dental coverage and never needed braces, but the average American may not have that advantage.”

  • 4 Ways to Invite Opportunity Into Your Life

4 Ways to Invite Opportunity Into Your Life

Spring is when opportunity surrounds us: Plants are blooming and coming into their fullness. Snowmelt and rains bring streams and rivers rushing through their paths. New life is everywhere. Spring is a powerful time to tune in to the nature’s abundance and invite opportunity into your life. Whether that means an unexpected twist in your work life that brings in more wealth, or a new and enlivening relationship that fills your spirit, or even a chance to travel and experience new things, we would all do well to open ourselves to the unknown pleasures the universe has in store for us.

However, we first must do the work of readying ourselves to receive these opportunities. Cultivating abundance, clearing away busy minds and schedules, focusing on gratitude, and committing to curiosity are all key to opening the window that will allow opportunity to shine in. This work is not hard, but it is intentional. Here are four ways to invite opportunity into your life during this season of growth:

    1. Cultivate an abundance mindset.

For many of us, having enough never feels like enough because we live with a scarcity mindset—the rug could come out from under us at any second, so we have to hustle and overproduce in order to stay ahead. If you live your life in constant worry that the well is about to run dry, though, you may create a self-fulfilling prophecy (and even if you don’t, you’ll certainly produce a lot of unnecessary anxiety). Instead, start each morning with a mantra that cultivates an abundance mindset. Tell yourself that you live in a world of abundance, that good things are coming your way and that you welcome opportunity with open arms.

    2. Clear your mind and your schedule.

We live in a culture that glorifies busy and productive and leaves little room for quiet exploration of self. But those moments of solitude are exactly what you need; if you are hyper-focused on staying busy, opportunities will pass you by. You must let go of the scarcity mindset that tells you constant motion is the only way to find peace and security. You need breathing room to explore what you really want, and clearing your mind and opening your schedule will allow you to make room for the opportunity you most desire into your life.

    3. Say thank you.

You might think of thank you notes as something reserved for post-party gratitude, but they can actually be a great way to foster connection. Thank people for sharing their time, their expertise and their experience with you, whether with a handwritten note or an email. Thank people who have influenced your growth. Thank people who have shown up for you during hard times in your life. The act of writing down your gratitude and literally sending it out into the world will help invite opportunity your way. Not only does it remind you to live in a state of gratitude and abundance, but showing your appreciation and interest in others will bring both giver and receiver a tremendous boost in happiness.

    4. Get curious.

Do you remember the curiosity you once had in childhood? Do you remember how much your world opened up thanks to that curiosity? A lot. So why do we stop being curious about our world and ourselves? Opportunity loves growth, so if you are doing the same things, thinking about the same things and pursuing the same things day after day, opportunity isn’t likely to come knocking. Allow yourself room to be curious about what truly interests you, and lean into learning more about yourself. It is our job as humans to grow and seek knowledge, and in doing so, we will attract opportunity into our lives.
