ABC News gets exclusive first look inside the fire-ravaged cathedral

The cathedral’s 19th century spire collapsed into the church’s nave, irreparably piercing through the 850-year-old building, a landmark of Gothic architecture sitting in the heart of France’s capital.

It took several hours for hundreds of firefighters to quell the flames, which ignited during an evening mass on April 15 at the start of Holy Week, the busiest and most important period of the liturgical year. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, though Paris prosecutor Remy Heitz has told reporters it was “likely accidental.”

“Like all of our countrymen, I am sad tonight to see part of us burning,” French President Emmanuel Macron said on the day of the fire.

As millions mourned and wondered about what could be saved from the cathedral, “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir was the first television journalist allowed inside since the devastating fire, going inside the church with retired French Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin, who has been chosen by Macron to lead the restoration of the storied church.

  • Another rate cut soon? Lowest food inflation in 27 years gives RBI more headroom to support growth – The Financial Express

Another rate cut soon? Lowest food inflation in 27 years gives RBI more headroom to support growth – The Financial Express

The Reserve Bank of India may keep its focus firmly on growth, despite a moderate rise in CPI inflation in March, as the central bank draws comfort from falling core inflation in the month and soft full-year food inflation, which fell to a 27-year low. Most experts say inflation will likely remain benign while growth uncertainties surround Indian economy. A major factor keeping inflation in the economy benign is subdued food prices. According to recent government data, CPI food inflation during 2018-19 remained at 0.14 percent — which is the lowest since 1991. The low inflation, keeping well below target, has allowed the RBI to shift its focus to stimulate and support growth in the economy. “CPI inflation continues to remain comfortably below the RBI’s target of 4% and thus we continue to see room for another 25 bps of rate cut in 1HFY20. We assign a higher probability of a rate cut in August as uncertainties surrounding the outcome of the election, monsoon and budget would have partly abated by then,” said a report by Kotak Economic Research. The Central Statistics Office (CSO) recently cut its GDP growth estimate for fiscal 2019 by 20 bps to 7 per cent, indicating a slowdown from 7.2 per cent in fiscal 2018. RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee in its first bi-monthly monetary policy statement for 2019-20 cut repo rate by 25 bps to 6 per cent — the lowest repo rate in about nine years since 2010, while keeping the policy stance unchanged at ‘neutral’. Retail inflation picked up marginally in March to 2.86 percent compared with 2.57 per cent in February. The rise in CPI inflation was primarily due to an expected reversal in food inflation, which went up by 0.3 per cent said Kotak report. However, industrial output growth in February was flat at 0.1 per cent in February on account of slowdown in the manufacturing sector, show CSO data. Core inflation softened to 5.1 per cent in March compared to 5.4 per cent in February. “We expect the core inflation trajectory to gradually moderate to 4.2% in FY2020 on the back of muted growth,” said Kotak report. Other experts also expect inflation to remain benign and well under target, which will give room to Monetary Policy Committee to cut rates further. “Inflation is unlikely to pick up pace in FY20. Historical trends suggest WPI food inflation is unlikely to translate into CPI food inflation,” said SBI’s Group Chief Economic Advisor Soumya Kanti Ghosh in a Twitter post. On the other hand, even those who expect inflation to accelerate don’t consider it a big threat. Inflation is likely to pick up it is expected to remain below RBI’s target level, said CARE Ratings. CARE Ratings expects 25-50 bps rate cut during the year, the timing of which will be data driven. A benign inflation in future is also expected by Chief Economist and Executive Director of Anand Rathi Sujan Hajra. Even though he too expects a further rate cut, it may not happen in the next policy review, according to him. “Inflation, despite hardening, remains extremely benign as compared to the longer term trend. So we expect RBI to continue with neutral rate and accommodative liquidity stance. We expect 25-50 bps rate cut in 2019. However, after two successive cuts, RBI may pause in the next policy,” he said. Katie Price wails along to her and Peter Andre’s duet of Aladdin’s A Whole New World as men strip off around her

KATIE Price tortured fans with a rendition of Aladdin’s A Whole New World in front of a parade of naked men last night – before flashing her boobs to the crowd.

The 40-year-old reality star performed the song, which she released as a widely-panned duet with ex Peter Andre in 2006, at Porn Idol at London’s Heaven nightclub.

She was there to judge a weekly strip night but couldn’t resist performing the cheesy hit – without Pete, naturally.

As she finished wailing the famous tune, Porn Idol’s presenter announced: “That’s why it wasn’t a hit.”

Katie yelled back: “Shut up Jeremy” before the host told her: “Katie, Katie, it’s about the contestants.”

Pricey then turned to the line-up of naked men and resumed her judging duties, telling one bloke: “You’re beautiful – but it’s not you.”

It was perhaps her least outrageous moment of the night, with Katie having her naked breasts fondled and licked by a drag queen.

Pricey – who returned from Turkey after a series of operations on her face and body last month – also hugged a naked man.

Our photos show her dressed in a neon yellow jumper and matching trainers as she inspected a parade of naked performers.

Later, she was seen showing her surgery-scarred boobs to the crowd.

  • Why we need to stop eating fish | TreeHugger

Why we need to stop eating fish | TreeHugger

The recent UN biodiversity report states that overfishing is a bigger threat to the world’s ocean than plastic or acidification.

Few images have filled me with as much dread as the one in George Monbiot’s most recent column. It depicts a grim reaper below the sea, the blade of its scythe a ship floating on the surface. “Stop eating fish. It’s the only way to save the life in our seas,” reads the title.

Monbiot proceeds to describe the horrific situation that’s playing out underwater. There, according to the latest UN report on biodiversity, life is collapsing faster than on land, and the cause is “not pollution, not climate breakdown, not even the acidification of the ocean. It is fishing.”

The way in which the oceans are fished is destroying them completely. This is due in part to technology that allows fishers to remove far more than can ever be replenished and that ruins whole ecosystems in the process, though processes like dredging; it’s also caused by lax regulations and non-existent or toothless oversight.

Our “bucolic fantasy” of what fishing is must be revised. Monbiot writes that 29 percent of the UK’s fishing quota is owned by five families, and a single Dutch company with a vast fleet owns another 24 percent. Small boats “comprise 79 percent of the fleet, but are entitled to catch just 2 percent of the fish.” He goes on:

“The same applies worldwide: huge ships from rich nations mop up the fish surrounding poor nations, depriving hundreds of millions of their major source of protein, while wiping out sharks, tuna, turtles, albatrosses, dolphins and much of the rest of the life of the seas. Coastal fish farming has even greater impacts, as fish and prawns are often fed on entire marine ecosystems: indiscriminate trawlers dredge up everything and mash it into fishmeal.”

seafood in Portugal© Lloyd Alter – Seafood at a market in Portugal

Claims that the waters are safeguarded are bogus. Monbiot calls marine protected areas “a total farce: their only purpose is to con the public into believing that something is being done.” While fishers are legally obligated to comply with quotas, avoid no-take zones, and not overfish, there is no legal requirement for monitoring equipment to be installed on board – something that could be done across the entire UK fleet for a mere £5 million (not much, considering what it would do).

Marine oceanographer Sylvia Earle put seafood consumption into perspective in a TED article in 2014. She argues that it’s time to think of fish as more than an edible commodity. They play a crucial role in the ecosystem that outweighs their value as food.

“They’re part of the systems that make the planet function in our favor, and we should be protecting them because of their importance to the ocean. They are carbon-based units, conduits for nutrients, and critical elements in ocean food webs. If people really understood the methods being used to capture wild fish, they might think about choosing whether to eat them at all, because the methods are so destructive and wasteful.”

Earle points out the absurdity of eating apex predators like tuna and sea bass that can live up to 32 and 80 years, respectively. Bluefin tuna takes 10-14 years to mature, which is radically different from land-based mammals that are slaughtered after a few months (like chickens) or a couple years (cows). By comparison, “think of how many fish have been consumed in a 10-year period to make even a pound of one of those wild ocean carnivores.”

dried seafood in China© Lloyd Alter – Dried seafood for sale in China

Except for people living in coastal communities that have limited choices about what to consume, eating wildlife should be viewed as a luxury, not a right. Especially in North America, there’s almost always another choice. In Earle’s words, “[Eating seafood] is never, as far as I can tell, a true necessity, given our access to other food sources.”

Nor is there any truly ethical seafood. Monbiot points to recent reports of the Marine Stewardship Council’s failure to protect scallop beds and endangered sharks. Fish that we’ve told are safe to consume, like cod and mackerel, have seen their numbers plummet yet again. Aquaculture is contaminating ocean waters with its disease-ridden open pens. The message is clear; the times have changed.

“It isn’t like 10,000 years ago or 5,000 years ago or even 50 years ago. These days, our capacity to kill greatly exceeds the capacity of the natural systems to replenish.”

If you care at all about the oceans, worry less about the plastic bags and more about the fish – and keeping them off your plate.

  • CBD Guide: 12 Important Facts You Should Know Right Now

CBD Guide: 12 Important Facts You Should Know Right Now

    8 min read
Opinions expressed by Green Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

CBD has become a craze but most people know little more about it than it comes from the hemp plant and it’s believed to be very good for your health. All types of brands are racing to get involved. CVS and Walgreens both recently announced plans to sell CBD products. Coca-Cola is said to be exploring the idea of adding CBD to their beverages. Even Oreos has jumped into the mix.

The potential of CBD is exciting for business owners and consumers alike. In the past few months, I’ve become involved in the space when I invested in Nature Box, a snack startup. Our line of CBD snacks have become one of the most popular snack of our subscription service. For consumers, CBD has the potential to be a great source of healing and daily wellness.

Yet for all the potential profits and healing that could come with CBD, there are still many questions about what CBD actually is, why its important and how legal it actually is. I was taken back when my team at NatureBox proposed a CBD snack. I thought CBD was a type of marijuana or something illiegal. I read everywhere online about it and got conflicting stories so I decided to set the CBD facts straight here.

Here’s a complete guide to the things you need to know about CBD right now.

    1. THC gets you high, CBD doesn’t.

Despite what many people have written, no, CBD will not make you high. While both THC and CBD are cannabinoids, THC is the psycho-active compound that creates the “high” associated with marijuana. CBD has an entirely different effect on the body.

    2. CBD oil is not the same as hemp oil

CBD oil is an oil that contains Cannabidiol. CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant and usually combined with a base oil (often olive, coconut or MCT).

Hemp oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant and should not contain CBD, or any other cannabinoids. Hemp oil is associated with its own list of health benefits.

    3. CBD is in a legal gray area

The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp and hemp-derived products on a federal level. With regard to the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency), CBD oil from hemp is no longer a Schedule 1 controlled-substance, or drug. Per section 10113 of the Farm Bill, hemp cannot contain more than 0.3 percent THC by weight.

However, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has not legalized CBD for sale as a supplement. The agency has stated it wants more information on CBD and time to consider how it might regulate production, marketing, labeling, distribution and dosage recommendations. I’ll update this as more laws are passed.

    4. The FDA is becoming more involved

The FDA recently issued a statement from commissioner Scott Gottlieb  M.D., clarifying the next steps for evaluating the regulatory pathways for CBD. They’ve also scheduled a public hearing on May 31, 2019 and have made it easier for researchers to conduct studies on CBD. It’s clear that the FDA is waiting to assess more data before approving CBD.

    5. CBD is safe and non-habit forming

While the FDA has not formally made statements for CBD’s safety, the World Health Organization (WHO) provided data, and stated a position, that pure CBD is safe for consumption.

    6. There are two main methods for extracting CBD

Most CBD is extracted from the leaves, flowers and stalks of the cannabis plant via solvent or heat extraction methods.

The first method, solvent extraction, uses solvents to separate the compounds from the plant. On the high end, CO2 (Carbon dioxide) is used as the solvent. On the low end, harsh chemicals (ethanol, butane, kerosene, etc) are used as the solvent. In the second method, steam is used to extract the oil in a gentle and effective way.

The extraction method directly impacts the quality of the oil you purchase. Steve Raack, an industry expert and CEO of Vitalibis, explains why. “Hemp is a natural, yet delicate, plant full of amazing elements,” said Raack. “When creating a premium, full spectrum oil, it’s essential to extract CBD, and other plant compounds, without causing damage during the process. If the cannabinoids or terpenes are destroyed or damaged, then the product will have less efficacy or will require added flavors to mask the taste.”

    7. CBD is finding its way to consumers in many forms

As the hype around CBD increases, consumers are finding a wide variety of ways to consume it. The most common forms of CBD products include oils, tinctures, cosmetics, topical creams, gummies, chocolate, powder and off-the-shelf beverages. You might also come across food and beverage establishments adding CBD to cocktails, coffees and shakes.

    8. The purported health benefits are remarkable

While additional research is underway, CBD is believed to help with anxiety, inflammation, headaches, head trauma, epilepsy, insomnia, arthritis, gut health, chronic and acute pain and a number of other health conditions. Athletes and performers are exploring CBD’s potential anti-inflammatory properties to aid in recovery while the medical community is even exploring the medicinal uses of CBD, including its potential as an anti-cancer solution.

While all of these potential remedies are exciting, it’s likely that additional studies need to be conducted on humans before the FDA will approve CBD as a supplement or medicine.

    9. There’s a big difference between full spectrum and CBD isolate

CBD isolate is a term that describes a crystalline powder that contains only CBD. This form of CBD endures the most amount of processing and can be sold in products that include synthetic or natural flavor additives. Initial research from Israel indicates that the efficacy of CBD isolate falls along a bell curve, limiting its effectiveness at many dosage levels.

Full spectrum describes a plant oil that includes more than just the actual CBD itself. The additional compounds include other important cannabinoids, phytonutrients, chlorophyll, terpenes and flavonoids. Current research on full spectrum oil suggests that CBD with additional compounds creates an “entourage effect” that is more effective than CBD on its own.

    10. Know what you’re buying

Since the FDA has not set standards for quality, content and marketing, it’s important that consumers research the products their buying. Yet industry experts suggest a few best practices.

    11. People are giving CBD to their pets

It’s not hard to find anecdotal stories of CBD having a positive impact on dogs and ailments like separation anxiety, arthritis, join pain and aging. That said, it’s important to understand the benefits and precautions when giving CBD to your dog or pet.

    12. Some cities are cracking down on CBD

Even though hemp CBD was legalized by the 2018 Farm Bill, some city governments and regulatory bodies are restricting some CBD distribution. The New York City Department of Health has cracked down on restaurants, bars, coffee shops and other food service establishments from adding CBD to food or beverages. “Restaurants in New York City are not permitted to add anything to food or drink that is not approved as safe to eat,” a department spokeswoman said.

It’s reasonable to expect that CBD will continue to flourish in 2019. The 2018 Farm Bill paved the way for businesses and consumers to get more involved. Projections for the industry, and projections from individual businesses, point to a robust industry unfolding before our eyes. Everyone will be watching the FDA to see how they proceed in regulating the market – and how states and cities will follow their guidance.

CBD might be in a legal gray area, yet there’s no question that the CBD market will be an exciting industry to watch in the next few years. These answers should help you better understand CBD from consumer, legal and entrepreneurial standpoints.

  • Law passes in Florida covering full cost of cancer treatment for firefighters

Law passes in Florida covering full cost of cancer treatment for firefighters

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Friday that will provide the full cost of cancer treatment to firefighters across the state.

The bill passed with unanimous approval in the Florida House of Representatives and Senate.

7News cameras captured Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis as he held up the legislation during a ceremony held Friday.

“Two years ago, we started this fight to help our firefighters have the benefits they truly needed to deal with cancer,” said Patronis.

Statistics show 70% of firefighter deaths are related to cancer and are 15% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than the general public.

“There are men and women every day who sign up for a job that they know is not only going to put them in danger perhaps that day but is going to put them in danger for the rest of their life,” said Florida state Sen. Anitere Flores.

Division Chief Nick Morgada said although the disease took his father’s life, he refuses to let that stop him from continuing his legacy by serving his community.

“My father first got sick with cancer back in 1981, and he beat cancer then, and then in 2005 it came back,” said Morgada. “I’m a firefighter as well, so I’m just as susceptible to the same cancers as everybody else.”

The law will also provide $25,000 of upfront support and grant disability pay and death benefits for the firefighter’s beneficiaries.

“As I look amongst the crowd, I see many of our brothers and sisters who are currently battling this dreaded disease,” said Omar Blanco, president of the Miami Dade International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1403. “I hope that today we provide you with some peace and comfort, that not only are you continuing to battle this fight with the support of your brothers and sisters, but now you also have the help of these amazing elected officials in this community that loves you and cares for you.”

  • Alternatives to Toxic Detergents- SmartKlean, Soap Nuts and Biodegradable Soaps

Alternatives to Toxic Detergents- SmartKlean, Soap Nuts and Biodegradable Soaps

I definitely get dirty A LOT, whether it’s in the garden or just constantly spilling stuff on myself, but as you might have noticed in my photos and videos I also try to keep pretty clean. At the same time, I do my best to keep clean in a way that doesn’t pollute our home.

This little thing is called a SmartKlean Laundry Ball and is a great alternative to detergents and soaps that pollute our waterway. The ball is filled with little clay balls, “active components derived from Earth minerals” and is good for 365 loads. It leaves no trace in our aquatic ecosystems like detergent does. It also reduces packaging waste and energy consumption from recycling bottles (which aren’t recycled as much as we’d like to think). Once you’re done with the ball the ceramics inside are even biodegradable.

I have used it over the last 5 years and have had a great experience with it. Honestly, I always struggle with getting my clothes clean in washing machines and I don’t feel like my clothes always get clean. But that goes for whether I used detergents or the SmartKlean. Technology like washing machines and I just don’t work that well together!

Another non-destructive alternative I use is soap nuts or soap berries. This is a berry shell that naturally contains a cleaning agent that works like detergent. They grow on the Sapindus mukorossi (Soap Berry) tree in the Himalayas. In my recent adventure to the Everglades I also found the lesser used North American species- Sapindus saponaria growing on an abandoned homestead.
These are 100% natural and biodegradable. After using them you can compost them or just throw them in your yard to biodegrade. They are amazingly soapy. I got the ones I currently have from Life Without Plastic.

You can also buy biodegradable, greywater friendly biodegradable soaps such as Dr. Bronner’s. These are made from ingredients that don’t harm plants, so the greywater can be used to water our plants. But you should not let this stuff into our waterways because it’s high in nutrients and causes problems such as algae blooms. Many health food stores have bulk sections where you can bring your own jar to fill up soap, saving the wasteful plastic bottle each time. There are also companies like Fillaree, that do mail order zero waste soap!

The alternatives are out there my friends. We can save a lot of money, reduce our detrimental impacts on the earth and live healthier lives all at the same time!
