    “Beaches and waterfront parks offer more restorative benefits to people than gyms, entertainment venues and the built urban environment,” says J. Aaron Hipp, professor of community health at North Carolina State University.
    In a survey of over 1000 California beachgoers, Hipp and his team found those who experienced the most stress in daily life found the beach the most psychologically restorative.

    Earlier studies have already proven the ability of natural environments to psychologically restore us, reduce heart rate, improve mood and concentration, and boost our sense of overall well-being and quality of life, but Hipp’s studylooked specifically at the power of the surf and sand.

    “Blue spaces” — such as riversides and the seashore — afford visitors the opportunity to recover from stress and restore the mental faculties needed to meet the demands of everyday life, says the study, published in The Journal of Environmental Psychology

    But not all “blue spaces” are the same, Ripp and his team found. The level of restorativeness of coastal parks is dependent upon environmental quality.

    “Mild temperature days and low tides offer the most restorative environments,” Hipp said.

    The odds of finding the beach psychologically restorative were 30% lower during high tide, possibly due to less sand and more crowding.

    Beachgoers were also three times less likely to find their visits rejuvenating if they perceived poor air or water quality.

    The study’s authors recommended societies maintain parks and access to natural areas as a part of “preventive mental health care.”

The captured light is transported to the contour of the panel, where it is converted to electricity with the help of thin strips of photovoltaic solar cells.”

    Since the vertical footprint is bigger than the rooftop one, especially in glass towers, these devices could make the most out of the buildings’ facades. They would not affect the architectural design but will represent a far more efficient technology.  Yet, they can also be integrated into old buildings as well.

    According to the New York Times:

    “If the cells can be made long-lasting, they could be integrated into windows relatively cheaply, as much of the cost of conventional photovoltaics is not from the solar cell itself, but the materials it is mounted on, like aluminum and glass. Coating existing structures with solar cells would eliminate some of this material cost.

    If the transparent cells ultimately prove commercially viable, the power they generate could significantly offset the energy use of large buildings, said Dr. Lunt, who will begin teaching at Michigan State University this fall.

    “We’re not saying we could power the whole building, but we are talking about a significant amount of energy, enough for things like lighting and powering everyday electronics,” he said.”

As with any other workout, disciplined, structured practice in playing music strengthens those brain functions, allowing us to apply that strength to other activities. The most obvious difference between listening to music and playing it is that the latter requires fine motor skills, which are controlled in both hemispheres of the brain.

    It also combines the linguistic and mathematical precision, in which the left hemisphere is more involved, with the novel and creative content that the right excels in. For these reasons, playing music has been found to increase the volume and activity in the brain’s corpus callosum, the bridge between the two hemispheres, allowing messages to get across the brain faster and through more diverse routes. This may allow musicians to solve problems more effectively and creatively, in both academic and social settings. Because making music also involves crafting and understanding its emotional content and message, musicians often have higher levels of executive function, a category of interlinked tasks that includes planning, strategizing, and attention to detail and requires simultaneous analysis of both cognitive and emotional aspects.

    How do we know that all these benefits are unique to music, as opposed to, say, sports or painting? Or could it be that people who go into music were already smarter to begin with? Neuroscientists have explored these issues, but so far, they have found that the artistic and aesthetic aspects of learning to play a musical instrument are different from any other activity studied, including other arts. And several randomized studies of participants, who showed the same levels of cognitive function and neural processing at the start, found that those who were exposed to a period of music learning showed enhancement in multiple brain areas, compared to the others. This recent research about the mental benefits of playing music has advanced our understanding of mental function, revealing the inner rhythms and complex interplay that make up the amazing orchestra of our brain.

    A Child’s Brain Establishes Faster with Direct Exposure to Music Education

    A two-year study by researchers at the Brain and Imagination Institute (BCI) at the University of Southern California reveals that direct exposure to music and music instruction accelerates the brain development of young kids in the areas accountable for language development, sound, checking out ability and speech understanding.

    The research study of 6-7-year-old children began in 2012, when neuroscientists started keeping track of a group of 37 kids from an impoverished area of Los Angeles. Thirteen of them received music direction through the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles Program where they practiced up to seven hours each week.

    Eleven children were registered in a community-based soccer program, and another 13 children were not included in any training program at all.

    The scientists compared the 3 groups by tracking the electrical activity in the brains, conducting behavioral screening and kept an eye on changes using brain scans.

    The results revealed that the auditory systems of the kids in the music program had accelerated much faster than the other kids not taken part in music. Dr. Assal Habibi, the lead author of the research study and a senior research associate at the BCI, explained that the auditory system is stimulated by music and the system is also taken part in general noise processing. This is vital to checking out skills, language advancement and successful communication.

    Did you know that cranial bones move?!!

    Following on from the work of Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (1828 – 1917) in developing early Osteopathy, Dr. William Sutherland (1873-1954) discovered that there were micro-movements between the cranial bones.

    Contrary to the earlier Victorian beliefs that cranial bones fused in adulthood, he found the cranial bones to be separate and observed the presence of groove marks along the edges where they were in contact with other cranial bones. Within his research, looking at the temporal bone (the cranial bone at the side of the head, underneath the ear), he saw that the contact edge was “beveled like the gills of a fish, indicating respiratory motion for an articular mechanism.”

    In essence, there was a sliding motion occurring between the temporal bone and the parietal bone above. The groove marks not only indicated the presence of movement, but also the direction.

    He found that by using light touch on another persons head, he could feel these small movements as they occurred.

    What he then wanted to know was what would happen if there was compression in the system restricting these movements. It led him to conduct a number of experiments on himself where he bound parts of his head to restrict different directions of movement. What he discovered was that the different compression patterns caused dysfunction in a variety of body systems – one direction affected his digestive system, another his sleep cycles, another his anxiety. In one instance his wife even came into discover him passed out on his office floor. It was at this point she put an end to his self-experiments for putting at risk his own health.

    He had found that compression in the cranium not only affects the head but the function of systems within the whole body.
