  • How to Build a Spiral Herb Garden

How to Build a Spiral Herb Garden

A herb spiral is one of the most clever permaculture techniques for utilizing space and allowing plants to work together in the garden. Usually located just outside the kitchen door, a herb spiral provides a menagerie of culinary and medicinal herbs, while saving space and helping with pest management in the garden.

Easy to build and fun to work with, herb spirals allow for herbal experimentation, based on some very simple principles.

    The Benefits of Herb Spirals

Architecturally, the herb spiral is an example of excellent design and nature-forward engineering. While a long, thin garden bed provides ample space for a range of herbs, herb spirals play with multiple levels to take advantage of the sun’s path, water channels, and plant companions.

  • A Garden for Frogs, Toads, Bees, and Butterflies

A Garden for Frogs, Toads, Bees, and Butterflies

Kimberly Hennelly is sharing photos today of her garden and the various nonhuman visitors she welcomes into the space.

I wanted to share some photos of the frogs and pollinators from my backyard. I am in Zone 6 in Vernon, New Jersey. I actually plant specifically for pollinators. Bee balm (Monarda sp.), butterfly weed (Asclepiastuberosa, Zones 3–9), fennel, buddleia, echinacea, hummingbird mint (Agastache sp.), black and blue salvia (Salviaguaranitica ‘Black and Blue’, Zones 7–10 or as annual), etc. I grow lots and lots of flowers. I also have habitats for monarch larvae and hatch them.

An adorable toad (I think an American toad, Anaxyrus americanus) hanging out on a group of rose blossoms. Seeing amphibians like frogs and toads in your garden is always a good sign. Not only do they have a voracious appetite for pests like slugs, but amphibians are also very sensitive to pollutants and many insecticides because they easily absorb many chemicals through their skin. So seeing amphibians in the garden is a good sign you’ve made a safe space for many animals to thrive.

Another happy little toad, this time hanging out on some daisies. When toads first switch from tadpole to their adult form, the young toads, sometimes called toadlets, often leave the water in a large group, so you may see lots of tiny toads in the garden all at once.

A female ruby-throated hummingbird. Plants with long, tubular, red flowers are often adapted to be pollinated by hummingbirds. But hummingbirds don’t just feed on nectar; they also eat insects and spiders as a large part of their diet and an important source of protein, particularly for females preparing to lay eggs. So to keep your hummingbirds happy, provide lots of nectar, but also avoid using insecticides that will kill off the insects they, and many other birds, depend on.

    The iconic monarch butterfly

    Black swallowtail butterfly

A gray tree frog. These tiny frogs are common over a wide swath of eastern North America. Avoid insecticidal sprays to make sure they have plenty of food in your garden.

  • E-cigarette explodes in teen’s mouth, shattering jaw and teeth

E-cigarette explodes in teen’s mouth, shattering jaw and teeth

WARNING: This story features images that some readers may find disturbing

A teenager was rushed to hospital with horrific injuries after an e-cigarette exploded in his mouth shattering his jaw and dislodging his teeth.

The 17-year-old boy was treated for a circular puncture wound to the chin, extensive deep cuts in his mouth, bone damage to his lower jaw and dislodged lower teeth, according to a report in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Doctors in Utah worked to fix the jaw fracture, removed teeth and other tissue.

But the patient, who wasn’t named in the study, needed a dental plate put under his lower gums to stabilize his jawbone, Dr. Katie Russell from the University of Utah Health Care, told Live Science.

His mouth still wouldn’t close properly, so doctors wired his jaw shut for six weeks to give it time to heal, Dr. Russell, who treated the patient, said.

“The increasing prevalence of vaping among adolescents is a public health concern,” Dr. Russell wrote in the report.

“At the six-week follow-up assessment, the patient had recovered well.”

There were 32 reported cases of injuries or poisonings related to vaping products including e-cigarettes between January 2013 and August 2018 in Canada, according to government figures.

Seventy-eight per cent of the injuries reported were poisonings from ingesting vaping liquid, 92 per cent of which were among children aged four or younger.

Nine per cent of the remaining patients were burned from e-cigarettes exploding or catching fire.

More than 60 per cent of the patients injured were male and eight-out-of-ten of the injuries happened in the home.

  • BREAKING: Court rules Trump admin can ax Planned Parenthood funding, as much as $60 million

BREAKING: Court rules Trump admin can ax Planned Parenthood funding, as much as $60 million

June 20, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – A panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today allowed the Trump administration to deny federal funding to entities that commit abortions on site, a temporary but significant victory for the pro-life movement. The court will continue to consider lawsuits against the rule while it is in effect.

In February, the Trump administration rolled out rules requiring facilities that receive family planning grant money Title X services to be physically separate from those that commit or refer for abortions. Under the previous rules, Title X services and abortions could “co-locate” in the same center, as long as the abortions were privately funded. The facilities receiving federal money must also be financially separate from abortion centers.

This new regulation, called the Protect Life Rule, is expected to reduce Planned Parenthood’s federal subsidies by $60 million.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, the Rule also ends “referral for abortion as a method of family planning,” eliminates a “requirement that Title X providers offer abortion counseling and referral,” and requires “more complete reporting by grantees about subrecipients and more clarity about informal partnerships with referral agencies.”

“This ruling is a victory for President Trump and the majority of Americans who do not want to fund the abortion industry with their tax dollars,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List. “The Protect Life Rule simply draws a bright line between abortion and family planning, stopping abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood from treating Title X as their private slush fund without reducing funding by a dime. Similar regulations were upheld by the Supreme Court nearly three decades ago. We are encouraged by this news and confident the Trump administration will prevail.”

According to Politico, “Some states challenging the rule, including Oregon and Washington, have said they will withdraw from the Title X program if the new rules are allowed to take effect, potentially forfeiting millions of dollars.”

Yesterday, the Democrat-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed a spending package that would block the Protect Life Rule from going into effect. That bill presumably won’t make it past the U.S. Senate or President Trump.

Planned Parenthood President Leana Wen called today’s news “devastating” and the pro-life policy “unethical, illegal, and harmful to public health.”

  • Food prices to increase again: Here’s why groceries will get more expensive

Food prices to increase again: Here’s why groceries will get more expensive

    Food prices inflation groceries

If we’re not paying over the odds for our petrol, we’re being asked to fork out more for our groceries. Data shared by economist Wandile Sihlobo and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) suggests that food prices are on the rise above inflation, after a relatively quiet start to 2019.

Food prices set to increase in South Africa

The year-on-year inflation rate had reached 2.3% for the first four months of the year. But May has shown a 0.5% increase, bucking the recent trends. According to Sihlobo, this will affect the total price of a normal food shop.

“After stabilizing at 2.3% on a year-on-year basis for four months, South Africa’s food inflation edged up to 2.8% in May 2019. This increase is broad-based across the food basket, with the exception of fruits, vegetables and sugar prices which slowed somewhat from April 2019.”

    Wandile Sihlobo, agricultural economist

Groceries: Inflation over the past eight years

Although this latest increase won’t be as keenly felt as the year-on-year high of 12% felt at the start of 2017, This is likely to have a knock-on effect going forward, with supermarkets and other stores having to adjust their costs accordingly. As Sihlobo’s data shows, food prices and their inflation rates have been on a rollercoaster ride:

For perspective — this is how South Africa’s food price inflation story has been over the past couple of years. 2/ pic.twitter.com/v4FnlD4DZE

    — Wandile Sihlobo (@WandileSihlobo) June 19, 2019

Causes of a potential increase in South Africa’s food prices?

But what is behind this sudden disruption in the market? Well, much of it comes down to a poor grain harvest from the previous season. Nowhere in South Africa has been able to escape dry, arid conditions and some regions have been badly affected by the threat of drought.

According to the CPI, maize meal increased by 11.4% this year between January and May, and by 1.4% over April and May. This wild increase has had an impact on further food production, and a price hike for your groceries is inevitable based on these numbers.

  • S&P 500 stock index climbs to record high on betting Federal Reserve will cut interest rates

S&P 500 stock index climbs to record high on betting Federal Reserve will cut interest rates

The S&P 500 stock index closed at an all-time high Thursday, following the Federal Reserve’s announcement on Wednesday that it would consider cutting interest rates to keep the economy in expansion mode.

The S&P 500 added 28 points, or nearly 1%, to close at 2,954 — that topped the previous high of 2,946 on April 30. The Dow added 249 points, rising 1% to 26,753, marking its highest trading level since its Oct. 3, 2018, close of 26,828. The Nasdaq added 64 points, climbing 0.8% to 8,051. That’s just 0.7% below its May 3 all-time high of 8,164.

Stocks are rising amid signs of an economic slowdown. IHS Markit forecasts U.S. GDP growth of 1.8% for the second half of 2019 — that would be down sharply from growth of 3.1% in the first three months of the year and 2.9% for all of 2018. Declining economic activity, muted inflation and trade tensions with China could also spur the Fed to dial back rates, according to economists.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Wednesday said the central bank would hold interest rates steady but signaled it’s willing to lower them later this year if trade tensions and the global economy worsen. The Fed’s current benchmark interest rate is set at a range between 2.25% and 2.5%.

“The Fed left the funds rate unchanged but delivered a dovish message, even relative to market expectations,” Goldman Sachs analysts said in a note assessing the Fed’s policy statement on Wednesday.

With investors counting on the Fed to lower borrowing costs sooner rather than later, Morgan Stanley analysts predicted in a report on Thursday that policymakers will cut rates by a half-percentage point in July. The Fed hasn’t pared its benchmark rate since 2008.

  • A Guide to Concrete Floor Finishes

A Guide to Concrete Floor Finishes

Many people think of concrete of a material that is used outdoors on driveways and walkways. Concrete is primarily found outdoors, but it’s quickly becoming one of the most popular indoor flooring options as well.

Why? Not only is concrete an eco-friendly flooring material, it can work well in practically any room thanks to the wide selection of concrete floor finishes.

The finish can have a huge impact on the way the flooring looks, so make sure you choose wisely. Here’s an overview of your options:

    Acid-Based Stain

The chemicals in an acid-based stain will react with the concrete to create a unique, slightly transparent color on the flooring. This color will not look consistent across the flooring since it is reacting with the variations in the concrete below it. As a result, acid-based stains create a more natural and rustic look than other concrete floor finishes.

    Water-Based Stains

If you want a consistent and opaque color, choose a water-based stain. There are dozens of different colors to choose from, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding the right hue for your home. Water-based stains are less toxic than acid-based stains, too. This makes a water-based stain a perfect option for eco-conscious homeowners.

    Polished Finish

A polished finish is perfect for homeowners who love the natural look of concrete and don’t want to cover it up with a colored stain. To get this finish, you will need to hire a professional who has the proper floor polishing machinery.

A professional can then buff the floors down until the concrete is smooth and shiny. The flooring will retain its sparkle and shine forever, so you won’t need to apply any wax or polisher to it in the future.

Epoxy stain applied to concrete floors

    Metallic Epoxy

Metallic epoxy is a resin that features metallic pigments. As the finish is applied, the metallic pigments begin to separate, twist, and turn into subtle patterns on the floor.

The metallic pigments contrast beautifully with the solid color of the finish, creating a unique three-dimensional appearance. A metallic epoxy finish in silver, bronze, copper, or gold can instantly make your concrete flooring look more modern and luxurious.

    Quartz Sand Epoxy

Your concrete flooring will look like high-end quartz if you choose a quartz sand epoxy. This finish is applied with a base layer of standard epoxy paint. Then, colored sand is poured over the epoxy until it is completely covered. Loose sand is brushed away after the epoxy has dried, and the sand is sealed in place with a topcoat. The result is a smooth and shiny concrete floor that looks just like natural stone!

    Acrylic Sealer

Applying an acrylic sealer will add an extra layer of protection to your concrete floors. Most concrete sealers will provide a subtle shine, but there are some sealers that provide a more high-gloss finish as well. This is a great option for homeowners who want to protect their concrete from water damage. But, it is not nearly as durable as other finishes, so keep this in mind when choosing which one is right for your home.

Spruce Up Your Home Sleek and Sophisticated Concrete Flooring

Installing a concrete floor can completely transform the inside of your home. Hire a professional to add this sleek and sophisticated material to your home so you can start enjoying the many benefits of concrete flooring!

  • North America freeze dried food Market: Market Drivers, Restraints and Opportunities-2017 to 2022

North America freeze dried food Market: Market Drivers, Restraints and Opportunities-2017 to 2022

The North-America freeze-dried food market is estimated to grow from US$XX in 2017 to US$XX in 2022, at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period. Freeze drying technically known as cryodesiccation is a dehydration procedure to preserve a perishable material or to make the material easier to transport. It works by freezing the material and then reducing the surrounding pressure to allow the frozen water in the material to sublime directly from the solid phase to the gas phase. It is achieved in four steps namely pre-treatment, freezing, primary drying and secondary drying. The final products have greatly reduced water content which inhibits the growth of microbes and hence remain unspoilt for a long time. But the nutritional value, flavour, smells also remain intact in the process. The end users are various departmental stores, trekking base camps, military camps etc.The market in the North-American region is mainly spread over the three countries USA, Canada and Mexico with USA being the major consumer followed by Canada and Mexico.

    Market Dynamics:
    Market Drivers:
The primary driving of the freeze-dried food market is the superior quality of its final product compared to other drying technologies. The final product enjoys a shelf-life(upto 25 years) without any externally added preservative. The final products are lightweight which makes it convenient for transportation.Busy life in those countries (especially the US) is encouraging them to shift to these freeze-dried food products due to their long shelf life, quick rehydration, high nutritional value and superior sensory quality. It is especially popular with the trekker and the hikers because these foods could be stored for many days and need not be cooked.

  • THE SOUND OF SECURITY | Harvest Right™ | Home Freeze Dryers | Freeze Dried Food Storage

THE SOUND OF SECURITY | Harvest Right™ | Home Freeze Dryers | Freeze Dried Food Storage

One of the most common topics amongst freeze dryer owners is whether or not the machine is “noisy”. While every person has a different tolerance for noise, it is safe to say that we live in noise saturation in today’s world. It can be eerily silent when there is a power outage, and people report not being able to sleep, or feeling very uncomfortable with the silence.

While some report that they keep their machine in the garage or basement to maintain the quiet in the home, others don’t seem to mind.

During the freeze cycle, the machine is acting as nothing more than a little freezer, and that is exactly how it sounds. There is a quiet hum. You may hear it, but it isn’t distracting.

When the vacuum pump kicks on, it settles quickly into white noise. It is noticeable, and you may turn the television up one more click, but it certainly won’t keep you from hearing your phone ring or stop your kids from hearing their music. In my mind, it reminds me of a dishwasher. You know it is there, but it won’t drive you away.

Our machine originally was to be placed in a side room off of our kitchen, but we decided to keep it in the center of the house for a while so we could monitor it and learn how it operated. Our dining room opens into the family room, and also has French doors into our master bedroom. Our sitting area and television are less than fifteen feet from the machine. We still hear the television, and we talk all evening. Our bed is literally eight feet from the machine, yet if we close the doors, we sleep like babies.

On several occasions, I have asked my husband if he would like me to move the unit into that back room, but he has told me repeatedly that he isn’t bothered at all by the noise, and he does like having it where we can hear it run.

Every load we run in our machine is another step toward food security. There is something amazing about knowing that when our machine shuts down after each batch, the end result is a shelf stable, lightweight, nutritionally intact product that will be there for us when we need it – whether that is 2 years or 25 years. We have never been concerned that the noise wasn’t worth the end result.

The freeze dyer is amazing technology. Harvest Right is continually improving their product, and someday it may be a quieter process. For most of us who own one, it really doesn’t matter. The quiet whirring of the compressor and the hum of the pump are simply the sounds of security.

If you wonder what food security sounds like, buy a freeze dryer and find out. You won’t regret it.
