  • Refurbish orphanages for 240 children in Uganda

Refurbish orphanages for 240 children in Uganda

We aim to extend and refurbish 7 houses in a children’s village, each of which is home for up to 35 orphaned children. This totals around 240 children all of whom desperately need extra sleeping space, bunk beds, bedding and mosquito nets plus room to eat, play and study.

    Challenge

At present children live in a small 2 or 3 roomed house in cramped conditions, often sleeping 2 to a bunk, usually an older child with a younger child. The bunks rarely have space between them and do not have mosquito nets. The Mama of the house has no privacy as they sleep with the youngest children. Communal living space is very limited so children have to live outside all seasons. They have nowhere to eat or study inside. 1 or 2 seats means the children sit on the floor or their bunk beds.

    Solution

By extending and refurbishing the homes, the children will have their own bed to sleep in, personal space, protection from the risk of malaria and room to move around, sit, eat, study and play, which is much needed in the wet seasons. The Mamas will also have their own space and privacy. Extra room also offers the potential for running water to brought in to the homes in the future.

    Long-Term Impact

The improved living accommodation will enable these orphans to enjoy better health and quality of sleep, which in turn will lead to better performance at school and more positive mental health. The bigger living space will also allow older teenagers and the Mama who cares for the children, some privacy. The overall sense of improved wellbeing will encourage and boost the children in their daily struggles to cope in their challenging environment.

  • Instant Pot’s creator is merging with the company behind Pyrex

Instant Pot’s creator is merging with the company behind Pyrex

Instant Pot cookers already have a loyal following, and now they’re about have some extra clout, too. Corelle Brands, the company behind kitchen brands like CorningWare and Pyrex, has unveiled plans to merge with Instant Pot’s creators Instant Brands. The two hope to create a “world-class” housewares company that covers food prep head-to-toe, whether it’s the actual cooking or storing leftovers. Instant’s CEO, Robert Wang, also touted that this would help foster its “expanding product development pipeline.”

It’s not certain how this will affect the Instant Pot line itself, but Instant Brands will continue to operate out of its home in Ottawa, Canada. Wang will stick around as the combined firm’s Chief Innovation Officer, while Corelle’s Ken Wilkes will run the united company. Corelle expects the deal to close in the second quarter of the year.

There’s no immediate hint as to how this might change the Instant Pot line, but it could easily mean a lot for distribution and exposure — it could be easier to pick up the multi-purpose cooker. This could also give the company more freedom to take chances, such as introducing new technology to Instant Pot or exploring unfamiliar device categories.

  • Octopus And Squid Evolution Is Officially Weirder Than We Could Have Ever Imagined

Octopus And Squid Evolution Is Officially Weirder Than We Could Have Ever Imagined

Just when we thought octopuses couldn’t be any weirder, it turns out that they and their cephalopod brethren evolve differently from nearly every other organism on the planet.

In a surprising twist, in April 2017 scientists discovered that octopuses, along with some squid and cuttlefish species, routinely edit their RNA (ribonucleic acid) sequences to adapt to their environment.

This is weird because that’s really not how adaptations usually happen in multicellular animals. When an organism changes in some fundamental way, it typically starts with a genetic mutation – a change to the DNA.

Those genetic changes are then translated into action by DNA’s molecular sidekick, RNA. You can think of DNA instructions as a recipe, while RNA is the chef that orchestrates the cooking in the kitchen of each cell, producing necessary proteins that keep the whole organism going.

But RNA doesn’t just blindly execute instructions – occasionally it improvises with some of the ingredients, changing which proteins are produced in the cell in a rare process called RNA editing.

When such an edit happens, it can change how the proteins work, allowing the organism to fine-tune its genetic information without actually undergoing any genetic mutations. But most organisms don’t really bother with this method, as it’s messy and causes problems more often that solving them.

“The consensus among folks who study such things is Mother Nature gave RNA editing a try, found it wanting, and largely abandoned it,” Anna Vlasits reported for Wired.

But it looks like cephalopods didn’t get the memo.

In 2015, researchers discovered that the common squid has edited more than 60 percent of RNA in its nervous system. Those edits essentially changed its brain physiology, presumably to adapt to various temperature conditions in the ocean.

The team returned in 2017 with an even more startling finding – at least two species of octopus and one cuttlefish do the same thing on a regular basis. To draw evolutionary comparisons, they also looked at a nautilus and a gastropod slug and found their RNA-editing prowess to be lacking.

“This shows that high levels of RNA editing is not generally a molluscan thing; it’s an invention of the coleoid cephalopods,” said co-lead researcher, Joshua Rosenthal of the US Marine Biological Laboratory.

The researchers analyzed hundreds of thousands of RNA recording sites in these animals, who belong to the coleoid subclass of cephalopods. They found that clever RNA editing was especially common in the coleoid nervous system.

“I wonder if it has to do with their extremely developed brains,” geneticist Kazuko Nishikura from the US Wistar Institute, who wasn’t involved in the study, told Ed Yong at The Atlantic.

It’s true that coleoid cephalopods are exceptionally intelligent. There are countless riveting octopus escape artist stories out there, not to mention evidence of tool use, and that one eight-armed guy at a New Zealand aquarium who learned to photograph people. (Yes, really.)

So it’s certainly a compelling hypothesis that octopus smarts might come from their unconventionally high reliance on RNA edits to keep the brain going.

“There is something fundamentally different going on in these cephalopods,” said Rosenthal.

But it’s not just that these animals are adept at fixing up their RNA as needed – the team found that this ability came with a distinct evolutionary tradeoff, which sets them apart from the rest of the animal world.

In terms of run-of-the-mill genomic evolution (the one that uses genetic mutations, as mentioned above), coleoids have been evolving really, really slowly. The researchers claimed that this has been a necessary sacrifice – if you find a mechanism that helps you survive, just keep using it.

“The conclusion here is that in order to maintain this flexibility to edit RNA, the coleoids have had to give up the ability to evolve in the surrounding regions – a lot,” said Rosenthal.

As the next step, the team will be developing genetic models of cephalopods so they can trace how and when this RNA editing kicks in.

“It could be something as simple as temperature changes or as complicated as experience, a form of memory,” said Rosenthal.

A version of this story was originally published in April 2017.

Just when we thought octopuses couldn’t be any weirder, it turns out that they and their cephalopod brethren evolve differently from nearly every other organism on the planet.

  • Multi-Billionaire Hugo Salinas Price Just Warned The World’s Paper Money System Is Going To Collapse

Multi-Billionaire Hugo Salinas Price Just Warned The World’s Paper Money System Is Going To Collapse

Multi-billionaire Hugo Salinas Price just warned that the world’s paper money system is going to collapse.

Today’s Market For Gold Has Two Individuals
March  (King World News) – Multi-billionaire Hugo Salinas Price:  The world used gold coins as money up until the first years of 1900.

Since that time, the world’s use of gold as money has ceased, and as of today, gold’s only function is as a means of saving wealth for future use.

Today, the market for gold consists of two groups of individuals or economic entities: a) those who wish to acquire gold for the purpose of saving some wealth for future use, and b) those who hope to realize a profit in terms of paper money, by speculating in the gold market.

The group “a”, of savers, is a relatively small group, and for the most part, only purchases gold and does not sell.

The group “b”, of speculators, is a large group made up of individuals or economic entities anxious to realize paper profits.

The world is extremely indebted, and a great number of individuals are hard-pressed to make a buck on their speculations, including those in gold…

    The Gold Casino
    Hugo Salinas Price continues:
The monetary authorities running the paper-money schemes of the present are anxious to forestall significant rises in the paper price of gold because such rises would diminish confidence in the lasting value of the paper money in use today.

The gold-gambling casino run by today’s monetary authorities makes Las Vegas gambling look like child’s play. The poor wretches who want to make a buck by speculating in gold are regularly taken to the cleaners by the legal manipulation carried out by the monetary authorities of the West.

There is only one policy which makes sense for those who are anticipating the collapse of all paper money in this world: buy and hold gold. Most people simply cannot afford to do that.

Nobody knows when the world’s paper money is going to collapse; it may happen tomorrow, or it may happen years from today. We don’t know when, but the collapse will happen at some date. That is engraved in granite.

In the meantime, if you want to lose money, speculating in gold is a good way to do it.

If you are one of those who is strong enough, buy and save gold; if not yourself, your children or grand-children will be thankful you did so.

  • How the humble marigold outsmarts a devastating tomato pest

How the humble marigold outsmarts a devastating tomato pest

Scientists have revealed for the first time the natural weapon used by marigolds to protect tomato plants against destructive whiteflies.

Researchers from Newcastle University’s School of Natural and Environmental Sciences carried out a study to prove what gardeners around the world have known for generations — marigolds repel tomato whiteflies.

Publishing their findings today (1 March) in the journal PLOS ONE, the experts have identified limonene — released by marigolds — as the main component responsible for keeping tomato whiteflies at bay. The insects find the smell of limonene repellent and are slowed down by the powerful chemical.

    Large-scale application

The findings of the study have the potential to pave the way to developing safer and cheaper alternatives to pesticides.

Since limonene repels the whitefly without killing them, using the chemical shouldn’t lead to resistance, and the study has shown that it doesn’t affect the quality of the produce. All it takes to deter the whiteflies is interspersing marigolds in tomato plots, or hang little pots of limonene in among the tomato plants so that the smell can disperse out into the tomato foliage.

In fact, the research team, led by Dr. Colin Tosh and Niall Conboy, has shown that may be possible in to develop a product, similar to an air freshener, containing pure limonene that can be hung in glasshouses to confuse the whiteflies by exposing them to a blast of limonene.

Newcastle University Ph.D. student Niall said: “We spoke to many gardeners who knew marigolds were effective in protecting tomatoes against whiteflies, but it has never been tested scientifically.

“We found that the chemical which was released in the highest abundance from marigolds was limonene. This is exciting because limonene is inexpensive, it’s not harmful and it’s a lot less risky to use than pesticides, particularly when you don’t apply it to the crop and it is only a weak scent in the air.

“Most pesticides are sprayed onto the crops. This doesn’t only kill the pest that is targeted, it kills absolutely everything, including the natural enemies of the pest.”

Limonene makes up around 90% of the oil in citrus peel and is commonly found in household air fresheners and mosquito repellent.

Dr. Tosh said: “There is great potential to use limonene indoors and outdoors, either by planting marigolds near tomatoes or by using pods of pure limonene. Another important benefit of using limonene is that it’s not only safe to bees, but the marigolds provide nectar for the bees which are vital for pollination.

“Any alternative methods of whitefly control that can reduce pesticide use and introduce greater plant and animal diversity into agricultural and horticultural systems should be welcomed.”

The researchers carried out two big glasshouse trials. Working with French marigolds in the first experiment, they established that the repellent effect works and that marigolds are an effective companion plant to keep whiteflies away from the tomato plants.

For the second experiment, the team used a machine that allowed them to analyze the gaseous and volatile chemicals released by the plants. Through this, they were able to pinpoint which chemical was released from the marigolds. They also determined that interspersing marigolds with other companion plants, that whiteflies don’t like, doesn’t increase or decrease the repellent effect. It means that non-host plants of the whiteflies can repel them, not just marigolds.

    A notorious pest

Whitefly adults are tiny, moth-like insects that feed on plant sap. They cause severe produce losses to an array of crops through transmission of a number of plant viruses and encouraging mold growth on the plant.

Dr. Tosh said: “Direct feeding from both adults and larvae results in honeydew secretion at a very high rate. The honeydew secretion that covers the leaves reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant and renders fruit unmarketable.”

Further studies will focus on developing a three companion plant mixture that will repel three major insect pests of tomato — whiteflies, spider mites, and thrips.

Longer term, the researchers aim to publish a guide focussing on companion plants as an alternative to pesticides, which would be suitable across a range of horticultural problems.

  • 12 plants that repel unwanted insects

12 plants that repel unwanted insects

Are you an insect magnet? If you aren’t, you probably know one. Insect magnets attract annoying insects the second they walk outdoors — or so it seems.

If this describes you, take comfort in knowing that one of the ways you can fight back against mosquitoes, gnats, flies, no-see-ums and other pesky bugs doesn’t have to involve covering yourself with a sticky spray or engaging in chemical warfare. To help you enjoy going outdoors, try strategically placing insect-repelling plants in your garden or on your patio.

Essential oils in these plants act as nature’s bug repellent. Insects tend to avoid them. You can even use some of these plants to make your own natural bug repellent.

But know that simply including insect-repelling plants in your landscape will not in itself ensure your garden is insect free.

“There’s not enough research in this area to support that,” says Dr. Bodie Pennisi, an associate professor and extension landscape specialist at the University of Georgia’s Griffin campus. “The concentration of oils is not there to offer that kind of protection.”

There may be fewer insects, but no one’s done the research into how many plants, planted how close together, would be effective in repelling insects to any great extent, says Pennisi. One of the best things people can do to hold down mosquito populations, she advises, is to eliminate any standing water, which is where mosquitoes breed.

For those who would like to give the natural route a try, we’ve described some easy-to-find herbs readily available at most nurseries that are said to repel mosquitoes and other annoying insects. The smell of fragrant herbs is the result of the distribution of tiny globules that contain oils. High temperatures, for example, can cause the globules to become volatile, evaporating the essential oils and turning them into vapors, Pennisi says. The many globules on the underside of rosemary leaves (seen at right) are one of the best examples of this.

We’ve included our take on ornamental flowers that can help keep plant-attacking insects at bay. Keeping your growing areas as insect free as possible will help your vegetable garden stay productive and your ornamental beds attractive. In addition, we’ve included a carnivorous plant that eats insects which you can also include in your eco-friendly insect barrier.

    First, the herbs

You can keep basil in pots to repel insects or make it into a repellent spray. (Photo:arifm/Flickr)

Repels house flies and mosquitoes. Plant basil in containers by your house doors and in outdoor areas where you like to relax or entertain. Basil is delicious in salads, in many pork and chicken recipes and with a variety of soups. Basil also improves the flavors of certain vegetables, include tomatoes, peppers, and asparagus. You also can use fresh basil to make an insect repellent spray. A simple recipe calls for pouring 4 ounces of boiling water into a container holding 4 to 6 ounces of clean, fresh basil leaves (stems can be attached), letting the leaves steep for several hours, removing the leaves and squeezing all of the leaves’ moisture into the mixture. Then thoroughly mix 4 ounces of (cheap!) vodka with the basil-water mixture. Store in the refrigerator and apply as a spray when going outdoors. Be sure to keep the spray away from your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Repels moths, fleas, flies, and mosquitoes. Lavender has been used for centuries to add a pleasantly sweet fragrance to homes and clothes drawers. Although people love the smell of lavender, mosquitoes, flies and other unwanted insects hate it. Place tied bouquets in your home to help keep flies outdoors. Plant it in sunny areas of the garden or near entryways to your house to help keep those areas pest free. You can also use oil extracted from the flowers as a mosquito repellent you can apply to exposed skin when going into the garden or patio. The Everything Lavender website has a guide for extracting the oil and making a lavender-infused body oil. Added benefits are that lavender oil nourishes the skin and has a calming effect that induces sleep.

Lemongrass contains citronella, a natural oil often found in insect-repelling candles. (Photo: Zulashai/Shutterstock)

Repels mosquitoes. You’ve no doubt seen citronella candles in stores during the summer and read how citronella will keep mosquitoes away. Citronella is a natural oil found in lemongrass, an ornamental that can grow up to 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide in one season. (It’s worth noting that lemongrass isn’t just the name of one plant; it’s the umbrella name for plants in the Cymbopogon family, which also includes citronella grass.) This grass with wonderful culinary uses is hardy only in South Florida (Zone 10), so almost everyone else will have to grow it as an annual. It does well in a pot or in the ground in a sunny, well-drained location. Use its fragrant, narrow leaves in chicken and pork dishes and to flavor soups and salad dressing. Many Asian recipes call for lemongrass.

Bruise the leaves on this hardy plant to repel mosquitoes. (Photo: Andrea_44/Flickr)

Lemon thymeRepels mosquitoes. This hardy herb can adapt to dry or rocky, shallow soil and will thrive in your herb garden, a rock garden or a front border as long as these are in sunny locations. The plant itself will not repel pesky mosquitoes. To release its chemicals, you must first bruise the leaves. To do this, simply cut off a few stems and rub them between your hands. Before you do that, though, it’s advisable to make sure the plant’s natural properties will not adversely affect you. Determine your tolerance by rubbing crushed leaves on a small area on your forearm for several days.

Mint spreads aggressively so it’s best grown in pots unless you want it to take over your yard. (Photo: Edsel Little/Flickr)

Repels mosquitoes. Mint is best grown in pots rather than the ground because it spreads aggressively. Once established in the garden, it can be difficult to remove. Cuttings of mint in mulch can help broccoli, cabbage, and turnips. The leaves are commonly used to flavor minty iced tea. The aromatic properties found in the leaves are also present in the stems and flowers. With a little work, the plant’s aromatic oils can be extracted and combined with apple cider vinegar and cheap vodka (or witch hazel) to make a mosquito repellent. Containers of mint strategically placed in the garden or on the patio will help keep nearby plants insect free.

Home cooks love rosemary as much as insects hate it. (Photo: Alice Henneman/Flickr)

Repels mosquitoes and a variety of insects harmful to vegetable plants. Rosemary is available in various forms. Plants can be grown in containers on a patio and shaped into ornamental pyramids, grown in herb gardens or planted in landscaped beds, where some varieties can grow quite large. Rosemary’s oils are as delicious to home cooks who use herbs as they are unpleasant to many insects. The plant itself and its cuttings are effective repellents. You can make a simple repellent spray by boiling 1 quart of dried rosemary in a quart of water for 20 to 30 minutes and then straining the liquid into a container at least a half-gallon in size that contains a quart of cool water. Put a cap on the combined liquid and store it in the refrigerator. Add the repellent to small squirt bottles as needed when going outdoors. Discard the remaining repellent in the refrigerator when it no longer has a strong telltale smell of rosemary.

Snowbound Oregon man survived 5 days on taco sauce packets: ‘Taco Bell fire sauce saves lives!’

BEND, Ore. — A man whose car was stranded in central Oregon snow for five days survived by eating taco sauce packets and starting the engine periodically to warm up.

A snowmobiler found Jeremy Taylor, 36, of Sunriver, on Friday and a search and rescue team member who rode to him on a large snow tractor brought him out of the woods, said Sgt. William Bailey, the spokesman for the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.  Taylor, an avid outdoorsman who loves to go off-roading, was last seen getting gas on Feb. 24 in Sunriver.  He told his rescuers he and his dog, Ally, became stuck in deep snow on a U.S. Forest Service road later that same day.  He slept in his car and when he awoke Monday, more snow had fallen.  He attempted to hike out, but the snow was too deep, so Taylor and Ally returned to his car.

“Thank you, everyone, I’m safe my Ally dog is safe. I really appreciate all the help. Got lucky, lets (sic) never do that again. I’ll be in touch with everyone soon,” he wrote on his Facebook page late Friday.  Taylor did not reply to a message sent through Facebook on Saturday.  In response to a friend’s Facebook comment about how he ate three Taco Bell hot sauce packets during the ordeal, he joked: “Taco Bell fire sauce saves lives!  Taylor and his dog were both in good health when found, authorities said but were very hungry.Central Oregon has been hammered with snowstorms in recent weeks.  Sunriver is a well-known vacation destination about 3 ½ hours east of Portland.

This Woman Brings Smiles To Children’s Faces By Making Custom Dolls That Match The Disabilities Of Their Owners

Amy Jandrisevits, from Wisconsin, is an owner of a small business with a very beautiful mission. A doll collector since childhood, Amy has created A Doll Like Me.

The aim of this project is to create dolls that would have the same characteristics as their owners with disabilities and/or rare conditions. It was a lack of diversity in the dolls that pushed Amy to begin creating dolls like no other, in turn, making the children feel needed and included. And so, 4 years ago, having worked as a social assistant in pediatric oncology unit for years, Amy felt the urge to start creating representative toys for children.

On her personal Facebook account she says, “Even when I was a social worker, I thought it was important to have dolls available to the kids because everyone should have something to hold. Everyone should have a doll that looks like them.

Not only beautiful, the dolls created by A Doll Like Me make a difference in the lives of hundreds of children.

    More info: Facebook | Instagram | ca.gofundme.com

Jandrisevits goes beyond and above in order to make each doll resemble the child it’s intended for as closely as possible. To do so, she has learned to replicate everything from birthmarks to limb differences. Each doll is unique, yet they still have one thing in common – all dolls wear a smile.

“It’s so difficult to tell a kid ‘you’re beautiful just the way you are, but you’re never going to see a doll that looks like you.” – says a 45-year-old Amy, founder of A Doll Like Me.

A Doll Like Me has provided over 300 dolls so far which have been shipped to children all around the world. Amy’s ultimate goal is to turn her small business into an official non-profit organization where every child in need could get their one-of-the-kind doll free of charge.

And many people are responding kindly to her mission, as she has already reached $38.000 out of $50.000 goal on GoFund.me. Consequently, now many of the dolls are funded by donations!
