‘We Are God-Fearing Men’: Brazil’s President a Friend to Trump and Biblical Values

WASHINGTON – Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro came to America to tell President Donald Trump he not only admires him but is also a friend of the United States.

“It is time to overcome old resistances and explore the very best potential between Brazil and the United States. After all, it is fair to say that today, Brazil does have a president who is not anti-American,” Bolsonaro said during a press conference in the Rose Garden Tuesday.

discussed how to work together to end the upheaval in Venezuela.

President Trump said Bolsonaro’s historic election win marked a new day in Brazil and a new era of friendship with the United States.

“I want to congratulate you again on your tremendous election victory last October. It was an incredible feat and really a truly incredible challenge and the end result was something the whole world was talking about,” Trump said.

By all accounts, Bolsonaro’s inauguration as Brazil’s 38th president was a significant milestone in the world’s 5th largest country.

After years of leftist rule, the 63-year-old former paratrooper-turned politician is the first conservative president in Brazil’s democratic era.

“My campaign didn’t have a lot of money; almost all the media in Brazil were against us, so it was a huge miracle that we won,” said Bolsonaro.

Just 78 days into his presidency, Bolsonaro is already shaking-up Brazil’s political establishment.

Unlike previous administrations that pursued an aggressive anti-American and anti-Israel foreign policy, Bolsonaro is pushing for stronger ties with the United States and Israel, even announcing shortly after winning the presidency that he intends to move his country’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.”

Following his meeting with President Trump, Bolsonaro sat down for an exclusive interview with CBN News at Blair House, located steps from the White House.  Blair House is used for visiting dignitaries and foreign heads of state.  Bolsonaro told CBN why moving Brazil’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is so important.

“Each country has the right to decide where its own capital is, and the capital of Israel became Jerusalem, therefore we are studying the possibility of making that decision at the right time. When Trump took over, it took him almost 9 months to make that decision, I’m now in my third month,” the president said.

Like President Trump, Bolsonaro believes the mainstream media is fiercely opposed to his presidency and agenda. Bolsonaro also regularly uses social media to connect directly with his supporters.

“To a large extent, I support what Trump does; He wants to make America great, I also want to make Brazil great. I also have concerns about the indiscriminate entrance of foreigners without any criteria. But beyond this, we are both Christians and we are God-fearing men,” he explained.  Bolsonaro’s middle name is “Messias”, Portuguese for “Messiah”.  He’s a Catholic and his wife, Michelle, is a protestant evangelical who attends a Baptist church.

An assassination attempt by a knife-wielding attacker a month before the election almost cost Bolsonaro his life. He says it is nothing short of a miracle that he’s alive today.  “Doctors who attended to me said that for every 100 stabbings of the kind I endured, only one person survives. So, I am a survivor and owe my life to God. It is was His will for me to live.”

The attack became a turning point in his campaign as the populist candidate went on to win, promising to tackle Brazil’s rampant corruption and violence. Two months into his presidency, Bolsonaro is shaking Brazil’s political world, even standing up to dictators like Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro.  Both Bolsonaro and Trump refused to say whether military plans where on the table to intervene in Venezuela.

“I discussed this matter with Trump and obviously that conversation will remain private. Trump says all possibilities are on the table, and I in large support decisions of the American government.”  Bolsonaro has surrounded himself with well-known Brazilian evangelicals, like pastor Silas Malafaia, who regularly visits and prays with Bolsonaro. Malafaia told CBN News that he believes Bolsonaro is God’s chosen man to lead Brazil.

“Even though Bolsonaro is not an evangelical, he always defends the principles that we evangelicals have defended namely: he is against abortion, he is against the privileges of the LGBTQ movement, he recognizes the greatness and importance of Israel, defends the family and wants to fight corruption and restore our economic,” said Malafaia.  On his first official day as president, Bolsonaro promised to make Judeo-Christian principles a top priority in his administration.

It’s a promise that stands in the face of decades of leftist rule in Brazil.  “The ideology of the left has taken over the universities and also the journalists of Brazil. The impact has been the worst possible, and one of the main goals is to erode family values,” said Bolsonaro.  It was this kind of message that drove the majority of Brazil’s evangelicals to support Bolsonaro.

“The evangelicals of Brazil are equivalent to a third of the population and are growing. I had massive support from them because until recently they had no one to support who shared their values and faith.”  Bolsonaro’s motto is “Brazil above everything, God above all.” He believes it is a powerful statement about the importance of truth in politics.  “I have been a congressman for 28 years and I saw that in politics the truth almost never existed, and my feeling is that our people are thirsty to know the truth,” he explained.

His favorite Bible verse is John 8:32, “Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”

“Just like in a marriage between a man and a woman, if you don’t have the truth, the marriage ends quickly. In politics, if you don’t have the truth the government ends quickly,” said Bolsonaro.  After the interview, President Bolsonaro met with a group of prominent American evangelical leaders. Among them, the Christian Broadcasting Network’s Dr. Pat Robertson and Gordon Robertson and evangelist Reinhard Bonnke.

The American delegation prayed for Bolsonaro and promised to stand with his administration as he fights to protect Brazil’s Christian heritage and family values. They also pledged to help Brazil provide humanitarian relief for those suffering in Venezuela.

When asked why this meeting is important, Bolsonaro said, “I recognize the work evangelicals do in my country, which is no different to what they do around the world — sharing the Word of God and strengthening family values.”

  • 2 Islamic Groups Target Nigerian Christians – 300 Killed While 72 Others Supernaturally Saved from Firing Squad

2 Islamic Groups Target Nigerian Christians – 300 Killed While 72 Others Supernaturally Saved from Firing Squad

The news out of Nigeria is getting progressively worse as it is being reported that more than 300 people were killed in at least seven predominantly Christian villages across Nigeria in February and March this year, according to multiple sources that monitor persecution of Christians.

“Since February 10, there have been at least 270 people killed in Kaduna State alone,” International Christian Concern confirms. “It has been reported that at least 70 Christians have been killed during a 10-week span at the beginning of 2019 across the other Middle Belt states.”

In one early morning attack on the village of Karamai on Feb. 14, sources said 41 people died after 300 gunmen swarmed the village shouting “Allahu Akbar!” as they fired their weapons and ransacked people’s homes, according to Barnabas Fund. It was reported almost all of those killed were women and children along with a few senior residents who were unable to run away.

Witnesses reported most of the men of the village fled when the attack began.

    Fulani Terrorists

Another 71 people were killed and 28 injured in an attack on the Dogon Noma village by an Islamic group known as the Fulani militia on March 11. The 2018 Global Terrorism Index compiled by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) lists the Fulani among the top terrorist groups in the world. “In Nigeria in 2018, there has been a dramatic increase in violence involving Fulani extremists,” the report states. Those attacks are clearly not letting up in 2019.

In the recent attack on the Dogon Noma village, the terrorists were “torching houses, shooting and hacking down anything that moved,” according to eyewitnesses. Some estimated that 100 homes were destroyed in the early morning raid.

Another nine people were reportedly killed and 30 houses destroyed in the village of Nandu Gbok on March 16.

Church leaders in Nigeria have repeatedly called on President Buhari, who is a Fulani Muslim, to take action against the Fulani herdsmen who have been repeatedly attacking Christian farming villages.

    Divine Intervention

The Fulani militia isn’t the only Islamic group terrorizing Christians in Nigeria. Barnabas Fund reports that Boko Haram terrorists recently captured 76 Muslim-background believers who had turned to Christ.

But a story of tragedy reportedly turned into a supernatural rescue for 72 of those Nigerian Christians who were facing a Boko Haram firing squad.

Four leaders of the Christians were told to renounce their faith in Jesus and revert to Islam. When the men refused, they were executed in front of their families.

Then the wives of the four men were told to renounce their faith or their children would be executed. That’s when something remarkable happened.

The children in the group said the Lord Jesus appeared to them that night and told them “All would be well,” according to sources with the Barnabas Fund. They were told not to fear, that He would protect them, and that they should not renounce Him but stay strong knowing that “He is the way, the truth, and the life.”

The next morning, the terrorists lined the children against a wall and told the four mothers they could save their kids if they would only renounce Jesus Christ and return to Islam. The mothers refused.

As the soldiers prepared to fire, something happened. They dropped their rifles and started to grab at their heads, screaming and shouting “Snakes! Snakes!” Some of the soldiers ran off, and others dropped dead where they stood, according to the Barnabas Fund.

After one soldier had dropped his weapon in fear, one captive attempted to pick up the rifle in order to fire at the fleeing terrorists. He stopped when a four-year-old child told him about angels who were protecting them. “You don’t need to do that. Can you not see the men in white fighting for us?”

The lives of all 72 Christians were spared and they were relocated to a safer region of Nigeria. When the Barnabas Fund’s contact asked the group’s pastor why he thought Jesus appeared to them and not to others, he gave this answer: “He does not need to. You have over 200 versions of Scripture and many people able to explain the Bible to you… These people do not.”

Journalist Criminally Investigated for Allegedly Using the Wrong Pronoun in Tweet

A British Catholic journalist is being investigated by the police for allegedly “misgendering” someone in a tweet. Caroline Farrow was contacted by authorities after making an appearance on “Good Morning Britain,” in which she engaged in a debate with a transgender activist, Susie Green, who has a trans child. Following this appearance, which took place last September, Farrow allegedly referred to Green’s daughter, Jackie, by the wrong pronoun.

In a series of tweets, Farrow noted that the police had told her she would “need to be interviewed under caution for misgendering Susie Green’s child.”

Farrow pointed out that, since the police announce that they would be taking action against her, online trolls have been sending the mother of five horrific, expletive-laden and sexually violent messages. However, while the police are highly concerned about Farrow’s alleged misgendering, they appear unbothered by this onslaught of cyber abuse.

“I have done nothing wrong, nothing illegal and will happily do jail time for my right to say that people cannot change sex,” Farrow added. “I have pointed out to the police that I am a Catholic journalist/commentator and it is my religious belief that a person cannot change sex. That we are in the middle of a national conversation about what it means to be male and what it means to be female.”

Later on last night, Farrow updated her Twitter once again, summarizing the case against her. “I can’t sleep I am so furious,” she wrote. “According to the police I ‘misgendered’ which implies that I used the wrong pronouns/nouns and this potentially constitutes a criminal offense. Let that sink in.”

Following the announcement of a police investigation, Farrow said she has been “overwhelmed by media requests,” but needed to “concentrate on a parent consultation about how my son is getting on in pre-school (he has a speech delay) and tonight my daughter is singing the solo in a choral society production of Vivaldi’s Gloria & is a bag of nerves.”

A person who is found guilty of this offense can be subject, upon “conviction on indictment” to  “imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or a fine (or both).”

Having allegedly engaged in misgendering, Farrow says she is “not in breach” of this piece of legislation.

  • Discover the P53 Gene that Controls Cancer Development

Discover the P53 Gene that Controls Cancer Development

[Editor’s note] This post was originally published in February 2019. It has been updated and republished in March 2019.

Our beliefs behind nature vs. nurture have always been a subject for debate. For generations we were taught that the genetic traits our parents have (along with the health concerns they face) would undoubtedly be passed along and inherited by our children.

But the science of epigenetics today is shaping our understanding that our genetics are, in fact, controlled by environmental factors. This field of genetics shows that environmental stimuli have the ability to turn genes off and on and therefore cause variations or genetic adaptation. Both genetic and epigenetic expressions are important factors in our health.

The Expression of Genetics and Epigenetics

While genetic polymorphism is a change in our DNA sequence which occurs before we are born, epigenetic adaptation happens following birth. This modification is the result of the influences of the environmental factors we are exposed to. An example of genetic polymorphism is evident in the case of individuals with a third chromosome at chromosome 21 (as opposed to two chromosomes). Also known as trisomy 21, this genetic abnormality occurs during development and before birth.

In the case of epigenetic adaptation, the DNA sequence does not contain a specific genetic abnormality, however the code is translated differently with undesired consequences.

This understanding of epigenetics dramatically impacts our understanding of chronic disease. The fate of our bodies is not held captive in the DNA inherited from mom and dad. Instead, we have the ability to reduce our risk of developing health complications by choosing to maintain healthy lifestyle habits. You can improve your health today by reducing stress levels, getting adequate amounts of rest, avoiding toxins, using detoxification techniques, eating quality foods, and maintaining positive relationships.

The P53 Gene is Associated with Cancer Development

P53 is a genetic protein critical in ensuring cancerous cells do not grow. Acting similar to a bodyguard for DNA, p53 is a checkpoint. The cell cycle comes to a halt when the p53 gene senses abnormalities in the cell cycle and activates the p21 gene. P21 stops the cell cycle by inhibiting a protein which stimulates cell division.

If the DNA is capable of repair, the p53 gene allows cellular division to continue occurring, ensuring the proper genetic expression. Otherwise, the cell is signaled for apoptosis or cellular death. P53 is responsible for regulating hundreds of genes in the human body.

Oxidative Stress and the P53 Gene

P53 is influenced by environmental stressors which cause oxidative stress. Oxidative stress leads to an increase in free radicals and weakens the ability of antioxidants to act. When oxidative stressors are low, the p53 gene is capable of acting like an antioxidant, ensuring a cell’s survival. As previously mentioned, the p53 gene is also responsible for initiating cell death and as a result increases oxidative stress to create cellular destruction.

A major cause in the development of cancer is a result of chronic oxidative stress. Epigenetic mutations arise when the p53 gene becomes damaged and genes no longer have the ability to inhibit cancerous cells from dividing. In fact, epigenetic adaptations can result in the production of a mutated p53 gene. This form of p53 is shown to increase the cellular growth of invasive cancers.

Toxicity and the p53 Gene Activity

The p53 gene can become damaged by long-term periods of oxidative stress and will lose the ability to protect a cell’s DNA. Some metals, such as zinc, are critical for stimulating p53 activity. Unfortunately, an imbalance between zinc and copper can lead to the p53 gene becoming unfolded and rendered inactive.

The imbalance of a high copper concentration and low zinc concentration are not the only culprit to blame for damaging the p53 protein. Cadmium, aluminum, mercury, and lead are examples of other heavy metals which are toxic to p53 gene activity.

The risk of cancer growth from the disruption of the P53 gene can be caused by exposure to environmental factors and toxins including:

    Air Pollution or PCAH

Furthermore, dietary factors can contribute to an increased risk of cancer. Unhealthy lifestyle habits contribute to conditions of chronic oxidative stress which disable the p53 gene from properly functioning. Unhealthy lifestyle habits that introduce chemical, physical, and biological influences contributing to DNA damage include the following:

Naturally Occurring Compounds in Nature Protect p53 Activity

Antioxidants protect the body from oxidative stress. Many potent antioxidants can be found as natural compounds in healthy food sources. Protecting the p53 gene from becoming damaged is necessary to reduce your risk of developing cancer.

The following food sources contain naturally occurring compounds which help protect p53 activity:

    Liposomal P53 Gene Therapy

[Editor’s Note] Dr. Shin Akiyama graduated from Sapporo Medical University School of Medicine in 1989 and was trained as a specialist in chemotherapy. He has been treating cancer patients for 30 years. About 10 years ago, Dr. Akiyama started practicing immunotherapy. Six years ago, he started practicing cancer gene therapy.

According to Dr. Akiyama, the number one cause of cancer in Japanese men is gastric cancer, while in Japanese women, it is breast cancer.

Liposomes are spherical vesicles made up of liquid completely enclosed by a double layer of fatty membranes. Liposomes can be used to contain and administer nutrients and therapies such as liposomal P53. Dr. Akiyama and his colleagues enclose or “wrap” normal, non-mutated P53 plus amino acids into liposomes, then administer these liposomes intravenously (IV).

Liposomes are positively charged, and are attracted to cancer cells because cancer cells are negatively charged. In this way the liposomes deliver intact, non-mutated P53 genes to cancer cells, which then induces apoptosis or programmed cell death, killing the cancer cells.

According to Dr. Akiyama, liposomal P53 gene therapy can be used to successfully target most of the solid cancers (not blood cancers) such as brain cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, and bladder cancer.

  • How To Grow A Single Marijuana Plant Indoors

How To Grow A Single Marijuana Plant Indoors

Growing a single marijuana plant at home has many advantages, and not only for beginner growers. Granted, the simplicity of caring for just one plant is really helpful for rookies, but that’s not all there’s to it.

First of all, finding and setting up a grow space becomes much easier. Literally anywhere could be a good spot, provided you follow some rules. Also, the fewer the plants, the better the care they receive.

But perhaps the biggest advantage of growing just a single marijuana plant is the reduced costs: Growing cannabis can be costly. However, with a single plant, there is little you need besides seeds, nutrients, soil and a solid grow light. The overall investment is minimal and will pay itself with marijuana of the highest quality.

What Can You Expect from a Single Marijuana Plant

There is something about homegrown marijuana that makes it so much better! The feeling you get when you taste the fruit of your labor is unbeatable. But how much weed can you get out of a single plant?

The answer won’t surprise you: It depends on your seed genetics!

Every cannabis seed has certain genetic predispositions that cannot be altered, no matter how much you care for it. For example, if a strain is supposed to yield up to 200 grams of cannabis, that’s the best you can hope for. When purchasing your seeds from a vendor, pay close attention to the “Indoor Yield” section of the specs.

Some seeds are much more productive than others. But then again, quantity isn’t everything! Thorough research will help you find the best seeds for your needs.

If you need help, we’ve prepared some handy lists with our favorites! Find them here and here!

Where Is Home Growing Legal (US)?

Not all states permit cannabis cultivation at home. You can find a detailed list here.

    Find the Right Grow Room

Since we are just talking about literally one pot of pot, anything will do the trick. It doesn’t even need to be a room. A spare cabinet or closet will do the trick. If you don’t worry about discretion, even your living room would be a suitable place. You’ll find that marijuana is surprisingly sturdy. Wherever you decide to put your plant, make sure it gets enough ventilation and lives in comfortable temperatures.

Inadequate ventilation in your grow room can lead to a host of problems for your plant. Especially if you live in a generally humid area, fungi and mold are a constant threat. Luckily, your mini garden doesn’t need much effort to stay healthy!

The quick and easy solution is a small fan inside the grow space. Turn it in such a way so the breeze indirectly hits the plant and make sure that there that it circulates! A fancy solution is to get an extractor. But that’s too much trouble for just a plant! In reality, you can get away with just the fan. Make sure the air that goes in, gets out!

If the humidity in your grow space is unbearable, invest in a dehumidifier. They are cheap but need regular cleaning.

As a rule of thumb, marijuana feels comfortable in temperatures that are pleasant for humans. It is highly unlikely that ambient temperature will be so high or so low as to cause you problems. However, grow lights are a source of heat and should be monitored.

As long as you use a LED grow light and a fan, the temperature shouldn’t pose a problem. These issues are much more important in larger gardens.

    Get Some Grow Lamps

As we’ve already said, the sweetest part of growing just one marijuana plant is the savings. Forget fancy lighting units and expensive setups: A simple full spectrum LED lamp will do the trick.

Even if your plant is exposed to sunlight, you should use artificial lighting. I know from bitter experience that marijuana grown on the windowsill will grow, but will never bloom! So, ensure that your plant will get at least 48W of full-spectrum light. These units are dirt cheap on Amazon and will last for years.

    Find the Perfect Seed…

We’ve discussed the importance of getting good seeds time and time again. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. Some people want taste, others believe that humongous amounts of THC are the most important factor.

The only thing we can say is that you should definitely buy a 3-pack instead of a single seed. Germination doesn’t always work and you want to have a backup option.

    …Or Clone!

Clones are a great option, provided you know other growers or have access to a trusty dispensary. Clones take a little less time to flower and if you know the mother plant, you don’t have to worry about the quality. You can even clone your own plant and preserve its genetics for future use!

    Growing on Soil

There are many ways to grow cannabis. However, if you’re growing just one plant, soil is pretty much the only option. Most hydroponic systems are too expensive and are designed for larger gardens. Therefore, in this case, the simplest solution is right on the money.

    Choosing a Pot

At the first stages of your plant’s life (after germination), you can construct a temporary home out of plastic bottles. Just make sure to cut holes in the bottom for water drainage. After sprouting, it is time to transplant the seedling to its forever home. Your local hardware or garden store should have a wide selection of pots. We recommend containers made out of organic materials that allow oxygen flow within the soil.

Whatever you choose, make sure the pot has drainage holes to discard excess water. Too much humidity will attract pests and cause mold problems.

    High-Quality Soil

Even the best quality soil costs very little. Therefore it makes no sense to cut corners here! Ask your local garden store for amended soil and mix it up with some hydroponic medium (perlite, vermiculite). That way you will minimize the need for extra nutrients and ensure proper airflow around the root system.

One of the many advantages of growing a single marijuana plant is that you don’t really need to spend much on nutrients and fertilizer. A good soil will see your plant through the vegetative and onto the flowering stage without any additions.

If you need to boost your plant while it grows, try to use organic products. They minimize salts buildup within the plant, leading to a better quality product. Better yet, prepare the fertilizer yourself! Here is a link for 15 homemade fertilizer recipes! Remember that there is such a thing as “too many nutrients”, so don’t overdo it.

    Happy Growing!

  • Russia plans massive Jesus statue on site previously reserved for Lenin

Russia plans massive Jesus statue on site previously reserved for Lenin

The plans await approval from the Russian Orthodox Church before ground can be broken.

The city of Vladivostok, the largest city in far eastern Russia, would like to erect an enormous statue of Jesus Christ atop a hill that was once set aside for a monument to the Soviet communist leader, Vladimir Lenin. Although the construction has not yet been authorized by the Russian Orthodox Church, the prospect of a large statue of Christ overlooking the Pacific Ocean has many of the Russian faithful excited.

In 1972, Soviet officials ordered the construction of a 98-ft-tall bronze statue of Lenin to be placed on the site, with the second statue of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin planned for a neighboring hill. Difficulties with the planning, however, caused the projects to be postponed repeatedly until they were ultimately scrapped around 1990. Since then the hills have been left bare.

The designs for the Christ statue — published by Russian media outlets — show that it would stand 125 feet high, which is the same height as the Christ the Redeemer monument in Rio de Janeiro. The statue would actually rise higher than its Brazilian counterpart, as it would also stand atop a 98-ft-tall pedestal, bringing the total height up to 223 feet.

In an interview with Russia’s Govorit Moskva radio station, Gennady Tsurkov, the head of the Vyatsky Posad center, said the statue had been inspired by Iliy, an influential monk who is the spiritual adviser to Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.

“He really wants to put up a statue of Jesus Christ as a protector of our Russia from the east,” Tsurkov said. “He says, ‘we need to make it higher (than the statue in Rio).’”

Turkov went on to explain that the majority of funding for the project would come from private investors, but the total cost has yet to be evaluated. Oleg Kozhemyako, regional governor who presides over Vladivostok, added that a modestly sized chapel, which could accommodate up to 30 faithful, is planned to be built within walking distance of the monument.

Religion News Service notes that online opinions of the project are overwhelmingly negative, with many people questioning whether the money would be better spent on state infrastructure. However, as the funds will come from private sources, it does not seem likely that the money would go to the state if the project were not undertaken.

The Vyatsky Posad’s website described the monument as a “symbol of the unity of the Russian people” that would “bless” ships leaving and arriving in the port city. This description was taken down quickly for reasons that remain a mystery. It is suspected that these faithful words were removed because the Orthodox Church has not yet approved of the project.

Where once was planned an enormous bronze statue of the Soviet leader may soon stand an enormous statue of Jesus, large enough to rival Christ the Redeemer, in Brazil.

  • People can sense Earth’s magnetic field, brain waves suggest

People can sense Earth’s magnetic field, brain waves suggest

A new analysis of people’s brain waves, when surrounded by different magnetic fields, suggests that people have a “sixth sense” for magnetism.

Birds, fish and some other creatures can sense Earth’s magnetic field and use it for navigation (SN: 6/14/14, p. 10). Scientists have long wondered whether humans, too, boast this kind of magnetoreception. Now, by exposing people to an Earth-strength magnetic field pointed in different directions in the lab, researchers from the United States and Japan have discovered distinct brain wave patterns that occur in response to rotating the field in a certain way.

These findings, reported in a study published online March 18 in eNeuro, offer evidence that people do subconsciously respond to Earth’s magnetic field — although it’s not yet clear exactly why or how our brains use this information.

“The first impression when I read the [study] was like, ‘Wow, I cannot believe it!’” says Can Xie, a biophysicist at Peking University in Beijing. Previous tests of human magnetoreception have yielded inconclusive results. This new evidence “is one step forward for the magnetoreception field and probably a big step for the human magnetic sense,” he says. “I do hope we can see replications and further investigations in the near future.”

During the experiment, 26 participants each sat with their eyes closed in a dark, quiet chamber lined with electrical coils. These coils manipulated the magnetic field inside the chamber such that it remained the same strength as Earth’s natural field but could be pointed in any direction. Participants wore an EEG cap that recorded the electrical activity of their brains while the surrounding magnetic field rotated in various directions.

This setup simulated the effect of someone turning in different directions in Earth’s natural, unchanging field without requiring a participant to actually move. (Complete stillness prevented motor-control thoughts from tainting brain waves due to the magnetic field.) The researchers compared these EEG readouts with those from control trials where the magnetic field inside the chamber didn’t move.

Joseph Kirschvink, a neurobiologist and geophysicist at Caltech, and colleagues studied alpha waves to determine whether the brain reacts to changes in the magnetic field direction. Alpha waves generally dominate EEG readings while a person is sitting idle but fade when someone receives sensory input, like a sound or touch.

Sure enough, changes in the magnetic field triggered changes in people’s alpha waves. Specifically, when the magnetic field pointed toward the floor in front of a participant facing north — the direction that Earth’s magnetic field points in the Northern Hemisphere — swiveling the field counterclockwise from northeast to northwest triggered an average 25 percent dip in the amplitude of alpha waves. That change was about three times as strong as natural alpha wave fluctuations seen in control trials.

Curiously, people’s brains showed no responses to a rotating magnetic field pointed toward the ceiling — the direction of Earth’s field in the Southern Hemisphere. Four participants were retested weeks or months later and showed the same responses.

“It’s kind of intriguing to think that we have a sense of which we’re not consciously aware,” says Peter Hore, a chemist at the University of Oxford who has studied birds’ internal compasses. But “extraordinary claims need extraordinary proof, and in this case, that includes being able to reproduce it in a different lab.”

    Questions raised

If these findings are replicable, they pose several questions — such as why people seem to respond to downward- but not upward-pointing fields. Kirschvink and colleagues think they have an answer: “The brain is taking [magnetic] data, pulling it out and only using it if it makes sense,” Kirschvink says.

Participants in this study, who all hailed from the Northern Hemisphere, should perceive downward-pointing magnetic fields as natural, whereas upward fields would constitute an anomaly, the researchers argue. Magnetoreceptive animals are known to shut off their internal compasses when encountering weird fields, such as those caused by lightning, which might lead the animals astray. Northern-born humans may similarly take their magnetic sense “offline” when faced with strange, upward-pointing fields.

This explanation “seems plausible,” Hore says, but would need to be tested in an experiment with participants from the Southern Hemisphere.

The brain’s attention to counterclockwise but not clockwise rotations “is something surprising that we don’t really have a good explanation for,” says coauthor Connie Wang, who studies magnetoperception at Caltech. Some people may respond to clockwise rotations, just like some people are left-handed rather than right-handed, or clockwise rotations generate brain activity not captured in the alpha wave signal, she says.

Even accounting for which magnetic changes the brain picks up, researchers still don’t know what our minds might use that information for, Kirschvink says. Another lingering mystery is how, exactly, our brains detect Earth’s magnetic field. According to the researchers, the brain wave patterns uncovered in this study may be explained by sensory cells containing a magnetic mineral called magnetite, which has been found in magnetoreceptive trout as well as in the human brain (SN: 8/11/12, p. 13). Future experiments could confirm or eliminate that possibility.

With this first compelling evidence that humans are subconsciously processing magnetic signals, “we can [try to] identify the brain region it originates from and try to identify the nature of the cells” responsible, says Michael Winklhofer, a magnetoreception researcher at the University of Oldenburg in Germany. “This is really the first step.”

  • Taco Bell hot sauce saves another life

Taco Bell hot sauce saves another life

A few weeks ago, we were shocked to hear that a man survived for five days stranded in the snow by eating nothing but Taco Bell hot sauce packets (resulting in his getting Taco Bell free for a year). This started us on the path to thinking that Taco Bell hot sauce was magical. And now, in light of another hot-sauce life-saving measure, we think we may be on to something.

In—happy Monday, everyone—Florida, a man was sitting down at a Taco Bell in Winter Haven when he decided to get up from his seat to procure more hot sauce. Mere seconds later, an elderly man crashed through the front of that Taco Bell with his car, hitting the table where the hot-sauce-retrieving customer had been sitting just moments before.

“Police said a customer who was in the restaurant where the car crashed into the building had just left that area to get hot sauce.” The driver of the SUV was a 77-year-old man who thought the vehicle was in reverse when he hit the accelerator and was in drive instead.

Although the building has significant damage, police say that no one was hurt, and we all know who (or what) to thank for that, don’t we?

  • U.S. town becomes ‘sanctuary city for the unborn’

U.S. town becomes ‘sanctuary city for the unborn’

ROSWELL, New Mexico, March 15, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – The City Council of Roswell, New Mexico passed a resolution Thursday declaring its jurisdiction to be in support of “fetal life,” something local pro-life activists say makes Roswell a “sanctuary city for the unborn.”

In a seven-to-one vote, with one council member abstaining, the City Council passed Resolution 19-28, which declares “that innocent human life, including fetal life, must always be protected and that Society must protect those who cannot protect themselves.”

The resolution also states that the City Council declares “its opposition to any diminution by the New Mexico Legislature of the limitations on abortion” and “honors the rights of healthcare providers to object on moral grounds to performing abortions and opposes any regulation or law seeking to violate that right.”

This week, the New Mexico Senate was considering a pro-abortion bill that would have forced doctors to commit abortions. It also would have repealed old, unenforced sections of the law criminalizing abortion – preparation for a possible overturning of Roe v. Wade. New Mexico is home to an infamous late-term abortion facilitySouthwestern Women’s Options, and has some of the loosest abortion laws in the country. Southwestern Women’s Options commits abortions throughout the third trimester of pregnancy.

In a surprise pro-life victory, though, the New Mexico Senate rejected the bill 24 to 18. Eight Democrats joined 16 Republicans in voting against it.

The Roswell resolution cites the Declaration of Independence’s listing of life as the first unalienable right. It also cites a paper from the American College of Pediatricians stating:

The predominance of human biological research confirms that human life begins at conception-fertilization. At fertilization, the human being emerges as a whole, genetically distinct, individuated zygotic living human organism, a member of the species Homo sapiens, needing only the proper environment to grow and develop. The difference between the individual in its adult state and in its zygotic state is one of form, not nature.

“The protection of human life is important to the people of the City of Roswell,” the resolution says.
