  • List of Tax Hikes in Sanders “Medicare for All” Plan

List of Tax Hikes in Sanders “Medicare for All” Plan

Self-avowed socialist and Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has released his proposal for a government takeover of the American healthcare system. The proposal, which Sanders calls “Medicare for All,” replaces private insurance with government as the single payer.

Rather than including financing mechanisms in the legislation, Sanders released a set of tax hike “options” that would be paired with the proposal.

These tax hikes would hit American families at every income level and businesses large and small. The proposal increases taxes by $16.2 trillion over the next decade, according to an estimate of Americans for Tax Reform.

This would pay for roughly half of the cost of single payer healthcare, which costs between $32 trillion and $36 trillion according to estimates.

The list of proposed tax hikes are below:

A New, 4 Percent Employee Payroll Tax

Sanders would impose another 4 percent payroll tax which on employees which he calls an “income-based premium paid by employees.”

According to Sen. Sanders’ estimates, this increases taxes on American families and individuals by $3.9 trillion.

A New, 7 Percent Employer Payroll Tax

Sanders would impose another 7 percent payroll tax which on employees which he calls an “income-based premium paid by employers.”

This is a $3.5 trillion tax increase over ten years.

    Eliminating Health Tax “Expenditures”

The proposal would ban employer-provided insurance and repeal the deduction for health care, increasing taxes on businesses by over $3 trillion over a decade.

This proposal would also repeal Health Savings Accounts, which are utilized by an estimated 25 million American families. These tax advantaged savings accounts largely benefit the middle class – roughly half of all HSAs are owned by families earning between $60,000 and $200,000.

The deduction for cafeteria plans and the medical expense deduction is also eliminated.

In all, Sanders estimates this will increase taxes on families and businesses by $4.2 trillion.

70 percent Top Tax Bracket for Ordinary Income and Capital Gains Income
This would give America the highest income tax rate in the world.

According to the Tax Foundation, a top 70 percent rate for ordinary income and capital gains income above $10 million will raise $51.4 billion over a decade. After accounting for macroeconomic effects, the proposal would actually cost the government $63.5 billion because of the proposal suppresses investment and economic growth.

    77 Percent Death Tax

Sanders proposes raising the death tax rate to 77 percent for inheritances. Under the proposal, the death tax would kick in at $3.5 million with a rate of 45 percent.

Currently, the death tax applies to estates over $11 million and applies a 40 percent rate.

This proposal will increase taxes by $2.2 trillion over ten years.

    Wealth Tax
Sanders proposes an annual wealth tax of 1 percent kicking in above $21 million in assets. Sanders estimates the proposal will increase taxes by $1.3 trillion over ten years.

    Bank Tax
Sanders proposes a tax on financial institutions totaling $800 billion over ten years.

    Broaden the Self Employment Tax
Sanders would require business owners to report more of their business income as salary, increasing the amount of self-employment tax owed. This would increase taxes by $247 billion over ten years.

Julian Assange faces DECADES in US jail

    • Wikileaks founder dragged from Ecuadorian Embassy in handcuffs by large group of police officers yesterday
    • He has not left embassy since 2012, when he was offered refuge from allegations of sexual assault in Sweden
    • Arrest was for skipping bail that year and also for a US extradition request over computer hacking charges
    • Ecuador said decision came after he behaved badly and interfered with its affairs during his seven-year stay
    • Appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court where he was found guilty of breaching bail conditions in 2012
    • He faces a further court hearing in May relating to his possible extradition to the US on the hacking charges
    • But the US is reportedly set to file further charges in the coming days that could see him in jail for decades
    • Corbyn told Government not to extradite Assange for ‘exposing evidence of atrocities in Iraq and Afghanistan’

Julian Assange is facing decades in an American prison for espionage after he was arrested and hauled kicking and screaming out of his Ecuadorian Embassy bolthole yesterday.

In extraordinary scenes, eight policemen had to drag the bearded and dishevelled WikiLeaks founder to a waiting police van as he ranted about Donald Trump and screamed ‘the UK has no civility’.

His arrest came after the Ecuadorian government ended his asylum status, saying it was tired of his ‘discourteous’ behaviour and poor personal hygiene, which reportedly included smearing faeces on the walls of the country’s London embassy.

As well as the prospect of a year in a UK jail for breaching bail, Assange faces extradition to the United States and a renewed rape investigation in Sweden. Following his arrest, the 47-year-old was charged by the American government with hacking 750,000 classified documents, which carries a five-year sentence.

But US authorities are reportedly set to file further charges in the coming days, including espionage, which can carry a 20-year sentence. As the country submitted an extradition request, a US senator yesterday boasted ‘he’s our property’.

Following his arrest, Assange was hauled to Westminster magistrates’ court yesterday afternoon where a judge branded him a ‘narcissist who cannot get beyond his own selfish interests’. He denied skipping bail in 2012 but was found guilty after the judge branded his defence ‘laughable’. Assange had tried to claim he breached his bail conditions because he couldn’t be guaranteed a fair trial in the UK.

The former hacker now faces a maximum sentence of one year in a British jail, likely to be Wandsworth prison in south London. This would see him serve six months before a fight over his extradition to the US begins. Experts say that process could take up to two years.

Meanwhile Swedish prosecutors said they would consider restarting the rape investigation which caused Assange to first seek refuge in the embassy. The alleged victim’s lawyer declared she would ‘do all we can’ to get the case reopened. A second woman, who accused Assange of sexual assault, said she was willing to appear as a witness.

Assange’s arrest came just 24 hours after Wikileaks had accused Ecuador of an ‘extensive spying operation’, adding that it assumed intelligence had been handed over to the Trump administration.

Mr Trump, who had declared ‘I love WikiLeaks’ during his 2016 campaign when the website released damaging emails concerning Hillary Clinton, said following Assange’s arrest that ‘I know nothing really about him’.

Is coffee a health drink? | Diet and Nutrition | Articles | Magazine

Some foods and drinks have been causing confusion lately about how healthy they are, and one of them is coffee. Here are some thinks people are reading or hearing about coffee. Various studies have touted coffee as being beneficial against Type 2 diabetes, liver disease, cancer, heart disease, and Parkinson’s disease. These are usually scientific studies known as retrospective studies because they examine the health of people who have consumed varying amounts of coffee and then determined if they had more or less of a given disease. Sometimes scientists think it is because coffee has antioxidants in it or some other beneficial ingredient. The exact cause and effect relationship is not usually known. Here are some things we do know about coffee. Non-organic coffee is full of pesticides. Coffee is acidic, and an acidic pH level encourages illnesses such as cancer. Coffee can inhibit the natural production of hydrochloric acid, which can impede the digestion of protein and potentially lead to illnesses such as heart disease and cancer. Caffeine and acid in coffee can irritate the stomach and the lining of the small intestines. This can cause ulcers, gastritis, Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Coffee can also relax the lower esophageal sphincter leading to acid reflux. Coffee can cause an increase in the passage of food before it is properly digested, which decreases nutrient absorption and increases intestinal inflammation. Coffee impedes the ability of the kidneys to retain calcium, zinc, magnesium, and other minerals. Magnesium is crucial to healthy bowel movements, brain function, and energy. The roasting of coffee beans produces acrylamide, which is one of the most serious cancer-causing substances in our diet. Coffee is addictive and produces excess cortisol, which is the bodies stress hormone. This can contribute to the development of high blood pressure and health disease. It can also cause a lower production of neurotransmitters, which can contribute to fluctuations in mood. Coffee overstimulates the nervous system leading to addictive tendencies and then withdrawal symptoms when the coffee is not available. Caffeine causes dehydration, which is harmful to the brain, liver, kidneys and other systems and organs. It also leads to premature aging of the skin. As with many foods and drinks, coffee may have some good points, but it also has far too many bad points to be classified as a health drink. The less coffee you drink the better. In fact, one of the only real health benefits for coffee is drinking one cup in the morning in order to get the digestive system working. This one cup of Joe can help to keep some people “regular” and at the same time lower the risk of becoming addicted. There is also good evidence to support the use of organic coffee as the way to avoid the pesticides and other chemicals found in non-organic brews. If you need a hot drink consider trying a decaffeinated tea of some kind such as white, black or green tea because you can get even more nutrients than coffee without the negative side effects mentioned earlier. And finally, coffee is usually served with sugar and cream, two more things that you do not need. Instead, try a little honey in your tea and you will have created a truly healthy drink instead of a potentially unhealthy one.

  • Chip and Joanna Gaines New Series and New Network to Launch Next Year

Chip and Joanna Gaines New Series and New Network to Launch Next Year

Chip and Joanna Gaines will return to television, but not with just one series – they will have their own cable network.

Slated to launch in the summer of 2020, the Gaines’ new network is being developed by Discovery.

As CBN News reported in November, the Gaines, both devout Christians, inadvertently announced their return to television during an appearance on NBC‘s The Tonight Show.

Citing their non-disclosure agreement, Chip said, “And it said quote-unquote you can tell your mother, but that’s it. So Mom, I just wanted to make a quick announcement.  We are coming back to television. You’re going to see the kids grow up. You’ll get to see us with obviously a six-month delay like the rest of the world. We’re excited to be back.”

In an exclusive interview with USA Today published Wednesday, the “Fixer Upper” stars spoke about their new series which will be the anchor for their new network.

“The difference moving forward is Jo and I are going to be able to tell more of our life stories,” Chip told the newspaper. “And so, as opposed to it being a very narrow vein in our universe, which is obviously construction and design and the things we do for a living, for us we feel like there’s a more holistic story to be told here, and that’s what we’re going to focus on.”

Inspired by their quarterly Magnolia Journal, the couple decided they wanted to do other things on television to reach more people.

“We loved this idea of connecting with people in a different way,” Joanna says, “telling other people’s stories, curating content. It felt to us a lot like what we do love with the magazine, but on a different playing field.”

  • Ancient Bones And Teeth Found In A Philippine Cave May Rewrite Human History

Ancient Bones And Teeth Found In A Philippine Cave May Rewrite Human History

An unusual species of human apparently lived on the island of Luzon in the Philippines as recently as 50,000 years ago. Based on teeth and bones found there, scientists suspect that these early humans probably stood less than 4 feet tall and had several apelike features. Yet, the researchers say, the bones are distinctly human — from a previously undiscovered species.

The first clue was a bone that surfaced in 2007. Archaeologist Armand Salvador Mijares was digging in a cave on the island of Luzon and found a toe bone. He says it didn’t look like a modern human bone. “There’s something peculiar with this bone,” he recalls thinking. But one bone wasn’t enough to say for sure who or what it belonged to.

Mijares, who’s with the University of the Philippines, was part of a team looking for bones of early humans. They kept digging for four more years. In 2011, they hit pay dirt — more toe bones, as well as finger bones, part of a thigh bone and seven teeth. And none looked like it belonged to modern humans. “We agreed that this could probably be a new species,” Mijares says.

Discovering a new species of ancient human is a career-maker in anthropology — or career-breaker, if you’re wrong. So the team spent another eight years studying the bones and teeth. They now conclude that the skeletal fragments are from three individuals who lived sometime between 50,000 and 67,000 years ago. Writing this week in the journal Nature, the scientists call them Homo luzonensis, after the island.

And, says paleoanthropologist Shara Bailey of New York University, these three are pretty unusual.

“We tend to define species based on unique combinations of traits,” Bailey says, “and that seems to be what’s going on here.” She says it’s “super-surprising” how the teeth and bones exhibit some “very primitive traits” along with modern ones.

For example, one toe bone is more curved than modern human toe bones. In fact, it looks just like the toe of a tree-climbing, ape-like creature, Australopithecus, that lived millions of years ago — well before the first humans evolved.

Even the mouth combines an unusual mix of past and present: Some of the teeth look much like ours, while others are more like the teeth of ancestors that lived millions of years ago.

Bailey calls the find a “mosaic” species: “I think it just opens up so many new questions,” she says. “It’s exciting.”

One question is: Were these creatures related to the Hobbits (no, not the movie characters).

“Hobbit” is the widely used nickname for another tiny, primitive human species that lived on an Indonesian island from about 100,000 years ago until 50,000 years ago. More formally called Homo floresiensis, the Hobbits were discovered 15 years ago. They, too, had a surprising mix of primitive and humanlike bones and teeth.

Leyland runner ‘saved by dogs’ after hill fall

Pita Oates, 48, was left unable to stand after she fell on a three-mile run in Lancashire with her blue collies Buddy and Merlyn.  One of the dogs stayed with her as she inched down the hill, while the other ran around barking for help.  This attracted the attention of another dog walker who contacted emergency services.  Ms Oates, from Leyland, said: “They were like a tag team, Buddy never left me while Merlyn went for help.  “I would have died without a doubt, I wouldn’t have lasted the night.”

When help arrived Ms Oates, who had left her mobile phone in her camper van, was drifting in and out of consciousness and starting to suffer the effects of hypothermia.  She said: “It was the tail-end of Storm Gareth, it was freezing and I was soaking wet. The winds were horrendous.” “I couldn’t stand up, I was having to bum-shuffle all the way down,” she said.  Every time my leg touched the ground I was in pain so I rigged up a sling using the dog’s lead to keep my leg up.” It took her 90 minutes to get down the hill by which time it had gone dark.

“Buddy never left me and Merlyn kept barking back at him – when this man came with his dog he knew something wasn’t right,” she said.  Paramedics and members of the Bowland Mountain Rescue Team, as well as two from Bolton Mountain Rescue, arrived to help rescue Ms Oates. She spent eight days in hospital and had a titanium plate fitted but still needs another operation.

  • Lawmakers Pushing To Regulate Trampoline Parks After Spike In ER Visits

Lawmakers Pushing To Regulate Trampoline Parks After Spike In ER Visits

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Lawmakers are pushing to regulate trampoline parks following a 600% increase in emergency room visits over the past five years.  In most cases locally, if you do get injured at a trampoline park, you can forget about suing because the park can sue you back.  Jason Freewalt is facing months of rehabilitation after jumping into a foam pit at the Get Air trampoline park near Chicago.  “I can’t describe it. It was one of the most painful things I’ve ever had,” Freewalt said.  CBS News found that over the past seven years, at least six people have died at trampoline parks. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, almost 18,000 ended up in emergency rooms in 2017 alone. Yet the parks operate with no federal oversight, and in most cases, if you get injured, you can’t sue.

“Trampoline parks want to avoid justice. They want to rig the system against anyone who is injured who may assert claims against them,” said Senator Richard Blumenthal.  Blumenthal wants trampoline parks to be held liable for the injuries at their facilities. In many cases, visitors sign waivers with forced arbitration clauses, meaning they give up the right to take their cases to court.  For instance, court records show a Sacramento family tried to sue Sky-High Sports in Rancho Cordova in 2008 after their son was injured just days before his ninth birthday. But according to court records, the boy’s mom signed a waiver, so Sky-High sued her back. The complaints were eventually dismissed.

Today, that liability waiver is the first thing you see on the Sky-High Sports website, and we found similar waivers for all the top-rated trampoline parks in the area. It’s something Blumenthal says helps the industry to hide the problem.  “They’re trying to hide individual deaths, the total number, everything about these injuries that may cast them in a bad light,” Blumenthal said.  While Freewalt also signed a waiver, he is still speaking out.  “When you go to places like this, you sort of trust in the fact that things are safe,” Freewalt said.

The Hurns have decided to try and sue Jump Highway anyway, but the business has since closed and declared bankruptcy.  Sky High Sports is now under new ownership. The previous owners did not return our request for comment about suing the family of the injured boy, but the world’s largest trampoline park company, Circus Trix, said, as with any sport, there are inherent risks, but they are committed to ongoing safety evaluations and take numerous measures to reduce risk at their parks.

  • ‘Flight shame’ has Swedes rethinking air travel

‘Flight shame’ has Swedes rethinking air travel

Stockholm (AFP) – Saddled with long dark winters at home, Swedes have for decades been frequent flyers seeking out sunnier climes, but a growing number are changing their ways because of air travel’s impact on the climate.

“Flygskam”, or flight shame, has become a buzz word referring to feeling guilt over the environmental effects of flying, contributing to a trend that has more and more Swedes, mainly young, opting to travel by train to ease their conscience.

Spearheading the movement for trains-over-planes is Sweden’s own Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old climate school striker who refuses to fly, travelling by rail to the World Economic Forum in Davos and the climate summit in Katowice, Poland.

A growing number of public figures have vowed to #stayontheground, including Swedish television skiing commentator Bjorn Ferry who said last year he would only travel to competitions by train.

And 250 people working in the film industry signed a recent article in the country’s biggest daily Dagens Nyheter calling for Swedish film producers to limit shoots abroad.

An anonymous Swedish Instagram account created in December has been shaming social media profiles and influencers for promoting trips to far-flung destinations, racking up more than 60,000 followers.

“I’m certainly affected by my surroundings and (flight shame) has affected how I view flying,” Viktoria Hellstrom, a 27-year-old political science student in Stockholm, told AFP.

Last summer, she took the train to Italy, even though the friends she was meeting there went by plane, as that would have been her second flight within a few weeks.
