    Bentley’s car of the future is so luxurious, it’s self-chauffeured

    For Bentley Motors Ltd., the future of luxury driving combines electric motors, artificial intelligence and the scent of moss and sandalwood.

    In honor of its 100th anniversary, the maker of the official car of Queen Elizabeth II unveiled the EXP 100 GT concept, sketching a vision that fuses self-driving technology with interior comforts featuring special scents, wood from naturally fallen trees and seats made from wine-making leftovers.

    The car skips past the looming Brexit struggles for the British brand — a unit of Germany’s Volkswagen AG — to offer a glimpse of luxury driving sometime around 2035. Featuring an electric drivetrain that can go as far as 700 kilometers (435 miles) on a single charge, the fully-autonomous car can switch into driving mode on-demand.

    In an era when every car could be its own chauffeur, elite automotive brands are trying to find a new way to define luxury. In 2015, Mercedes-Benz presented a concept car with open-pore walnut wood and ice-white leather that featured front seats that can swivel to the rear to create self-driving luxury lounge. BMW AG’s Rolls-Royce presented a prototype in 2016 with dramatic styling that made the body appear to float above the road and door and roof panels that retract for elegant access.

    ‘Sense of Occasion’

    Bentley’s offering, which measures 2.4 meters (7.9 feet) across, has doors pivoting outwards and upwards “adding to the sense of occasion on arrival,” it said.

    At the EXP 100 GT debut event, held Wednesday at Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe, England, Chief Executive Officer Adrian Hallmark called the concept an embodiment of the brand’s promise to deliver “extraordinary journeys“ to customers for 100 years to come.

    “It is a grand tourer designed to enrich and enhance the journey for the lucky people who have one,” he said.

    The car incorporates now-emerging technologies such as hand-gesture controls and seats that sense the “biometric mood“ of the driver, automatically adjusting everything from drive style to interior lighting, sound levels and fragrance.

    The zero-emissions grand touring coupe has an even-more-massive-than-before silver matrix grille and Bentley’s signature round diamond-cut headlights. A three-dimensional horseshoe-shaped OLED taillight configuration blends with the precise lines of its angular sides and trunk. Fiber optics are woven into sustainable fabrics inside the interior, allowing for mood lighting throughout. The roof is a full glass canopy.

    “We are using light as a precious material,“ said Stefan Sielaff, the lead designer.

    Bentley hasn’t committed to producing the car for sale. If it did, it would be the fastest Bentley ever made, traveling 0 to 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds, with a top speed of 186 mph. A charge to 80 per cent of total battery power would take 15 minutes.

    Near-Term Challenges

    Making the journey into the new automotive era poses a challenge for Bentley. The brand, which plans to offer more hybrid variants within four years, built its reputation on catering to well-heeled customers with sporty sedans and coupes powered by combustion engines, traditionally with 12 cylinders.

    The strain to lower emissions and the uncertainty of Brexit are adding to pressures to turn around Bentley. The unit suffered technical problems that hit the changeover of its popular US$220,000 Continental GT model, triggering a loss last year. The brand swung back to a profit in the first quarter.

    To minimize the disruption of a no-deal Brexit, the company boosted stock of vital components to as many as 10 days from two days as a precautionary measure, Hallmark told Bloomberg TV in April.

    FDA Reveals Dog Food Brands Possibly Linked to Canine Heart Disease

    The Food and Drug Administration continues to investigate 16 brands of dog food that may be linked to canine heart disease.

    Dogs that have eaten certain brands of pet food may be connected with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), resulting in congestive heart failure.

    statement was released on June 27 disclosing the brand names of dog food reported to the FDA.

    “We understand the concern that pet owners have about these reports: the illnesses can be severe, even fatal, and many cases report eating “grain-free” labeled pet food. The FDA is using a range of science-based investigative tools as it strives to learn more about this emergence of DCM and its potential link to certain diets or ingredients.”

    Dry dog food containing protein like chicken and lamb were among the highest reported of cases. Grain-free products ranked at the top of the list during testing along with brands containing peas and lentils.

    The original investigation began in July 2018 when the FDA announced that breeds of dogs not genetically prone to the disease were affected by DCM.

    Champion Petfoods owns Acana and Orijen brand dog food which made the list for most frequently reported DCM cases.

    “While we and the industry work to learn more about DCM, you can trust that Champion foods (ACANA and ORIJEN) are safe for your pets,” the dog food manufacturer wrote on its website. ” We make all our foods ourselves, we don’t use contract producers, so you can trust that ACANA and ORIJEN are made in strict accordance to our own recipes from high quality ingredients.”

    There are many things that one never wants to see out a plane window, and this is definitely one of them. In a video posted to Twitter by user Logan Webb, one of Delta Flight 1425’s engines can be seen with what appears to be its spinner completely detached and rattling around in the inlet, all while an extremely ominous orange glow emanates from deeper within from the still-spinning shaft.

    Flight 1425, which per ABC News was “32-year-old [McDonnell Douglas] MD-88 with the engines mounted on the fuselage near the tail,” had departed from Hartsfield-Jackson International at around 12:48 p.m. on Monday afternoon en route to Baltimore-Washington International before the incident struck about an hour into flight. Fortunately, the flight crew was able to make an emergency landing at Raleigh-Durham International at around 2:27 p.m. with all 148 passengers on board unharmed, if shaken.

    Delta told ABC News in a statement that the flight crew received “an indication of a possible issue with one of the aircraft’s engines.” That could fairly be qualified as an understatement, per ABC News:

    The number of homicides has rocketed over the past four years with more than 3,000 people slaughtered in June alone — and over 17,000 in the first six months of this year If the current trend continues 2019 will beat the previous year’s record of 33,341 murders, which was 33 per cent more than three years ago. Compare this to the total recorded last year in the UK, which has half Mexico’s population but only has 726 murder victims. Crime levels are so dire the government has called the army in. The rising death toll is the result of many cartels splintering into factions, which in turn are engaging in increasingly bloody battles over control of lucrative drug, theft, extortion and kidnapping rackets.  Security specialist Ricardo Márquez Blas told Mexico News Daily: “The last year of [the administration of] former president Enrique Peña Nieto was bad in terms of the crime rate but 2019 is on the path to being even worse. “It’s important to understand that we’re doing worse in security than the worst year on record.” The astronomical death toll comes as more and more British sunseekers flock to Mexican beaches, which are cheap and boast year round sun.  Half a million UK holidaymakers jet out there each year.  The Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean coast has the most popular resorts but as revealed by Sun Online hundreds of people are murdered here each year and tourists are increasingly being caught up in the bloodshed.     In Cancun alone there was 540 murders last year which shot up from 205 killings in 2017.  In one 36-hour spell in April last year NINE PEOPLE were murderedthere. Four months later, eight bodies were found after a cartel murder spree – with two of the victims dismembered and found in separate plastic bags. It is believed they were tortured, then burned before being chopped up into little pieces. As previously reported, security experts told The Sun that ruthless enforcers from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel – now the strongest drug gang in the area – were forging frightening new ground. Francisco Rivas, 45, who monitors cartel activity for Mexico’s National Citizen Observatory, said: “Now the new cartel members, like those from Jalisco New Generation, don’t respect the old rules. Something has changed. “They attack rivals in urban areas and murders happen in tourist areas. “They are not targeting the tourists, but they may fight a cartel rival if they see them out in the shops or eating and drinking in tourist areas. “Jalisco New Generation is not only the biggest and the strongest cartel, but it is also the most violent cartel we have in Mexico.”

    The Faith of Our Fathers: God and the American Revolution

    Many people are unaware of America’s Judeo-Christian heritage. The following are short profiles of some of America’s founding fathers, sharing their thoughts on how God’s hand could be seen in the establishment of this nation.

    John Adams

    In June of 1776, John Adams was in Philadelphia, deep in the flurry of political activity. The Continental Congress appointed him, along with Thomas Jefferson and three others, to draft a “Declaration of Independence” from England. Although Adams was later to become the second president of the United States, he is best remembered for being one of the great minds and statesmen of the American Revolution. His prolific diaries, letters, and books provide an invaluable insight into the politics of the time and to what liberty meant to the founding fathers.

    Freedom, Adams believed, did not rest solely on man. Instead, he wrote, “It is religion and morality alone, which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand … the only foundation for a free constitution is pure virtues, and if this cannot be inspired into our people, in a greater measure, than they have it now, they may change their rulers, and the forms of government, but they will not obtain a lasting liberty” (letter to cousin Zabdiel Adams, June 21, 1776).

    John Adams would face another difficult situation as the second president of the United States in 1798. He had a hard act to follow — the popular George Washington. Although he tried to avoid the trap of partisan politics, Adams soon found himself caught in its web. And if trouble at home wasn’t bad enough, diplomatic relations with France were rapidly sinking. Adams prepared the American army and navy for defensive measures against France.

    It was during this time that Adams spoke to the first brigade of the militia of Massachusetts, and re-affirmed the foundations for the American government:

    “We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion,” Adams said. “Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

    Thomas Jefferson

    Thomas Jefferson was just 33 years old when he was given the task of writing the Declaration of Independence. His knowledge of political philosophy, his eloquence as a writer, and his belief in natural rights made him a leader among the patriots.

    But he was not without his political problems. Jefferson’s opponents often portrayed him as an infidel and an atheist. But in reality he was a staunch supporter of the freedom of religion and considered it a very personal matter — one he often pondered in his writings. The man who gave us the immortal words “when in the course of human events” also gave us these reflections on God and his role in freedom. Etched in the marble of the Jefferson Memorial in his honor are these words:

    “…God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever” (from notes on the state of Virginia).

    In the early 1780’s, Jefferson was drafting a plan for future territories of the United States. Much of this plan became incorporated into the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, which established guidelines for territories applying for statehood. Under this law, any new states added to the nation would be recognized as equals with the original 13 states and not as colonies. The ordinance’s provisions for the states included self-government, religious tolerance and the prohibition of slavery.

    Jefferson’s belief in the unquestionable relationship between good government and religious freedom is reflected in article three of the Northwest Ordinance, where he writes:

    “Religion, morality and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.”

    Noah Webster

    Noah Webster’s dictionaries, spellers, and grammars shaped the education of America in the 18th century and his legacy still lives on today. As author of the first American dictionary and a son of the American Revolution, Webster sought to give the new country a different kind of freedom — a culture of its own. Webster considered his most important project his revision of the King James Bible. He wanted to make it accessible to every American. He believed God played an important part in the education of the people and in the preservation of the American experiment.

    Here is his advice on how to choose the nation’s leaders:

    “When you become entitled to exercise the right of voting for public officers, let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers, just men who will rule in the fear of God. The preservation of a republican government depends on the faithful discharge of this duty; if the citizens neglect their duty, and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted” (“Advice to the Young” from Value of the Bible and Excellence of the Christian Religion, 1834).

    Benjamin Franklin

    Benjamin Franklin’s role in drafting the Declaration of Independence was far from his first invention. The founding father contributed to America both in politics and in science. From almanacs and kite flying, to serving as ambassador and statesman, Benjamin Franklin was truly one of the most versatile of America’s founding fathers. Franklin’s scientific mind also led to many intellectual and philosophical discussions.

    Although he was not a regular church-goer in his adult life, he expressed the importance of implementing God’s moral values in all aspects of life. His writings demonstrate an acknowledgement of God that transcended the scientific mysteries Franklin longed to answer. In 1731 he articulated a creed to live by, both personally and in public life:

    “That there is one God, Father of the universe. That He is infinitely good, powerful and wise. That He is omnipresent. That He ought to be worshipped, by adoration prayer and thanksgiving both in public and private.”

    In the summer of 1787, delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia had been in bitter debate for ten long weeks. Tempers flared over heated issues between the northern and southern states. As tensions rose, some delegates threatened to pull out of the convention altogether, leaving the fledgling nation without a strong constitution.

    When it looked like no one would ever be able to agree, the elder statesman of group took charge. 81 year-old Benjamin Franklin stood to his feet. And although he was not known to be devoutly religious, he gave this contentious gathering a stirring call for prayer.

    “I have lived, sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? … I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better, than the builders of Babel … Therefore, I beg leave to move that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations be held in this assembly every morning…”

    Benjamin Rush

    Benjamin Rush’s impact on America did not stop with his signature on the Declaration of Independence. Although he was a member of the Continental Congress, Rush was also one of the most influential physicians in early America. He served as the continental army’s Surgeon General during the American Revolution.

    Under President John Adams, Rush was Treasurer of the United States Mint. More notably, the statesman encouraged support for building more African churches in Philadelphia. Rush was convinced this would reduce high black prison populations, since many of the convicted served time for stealing food and clothing.

    Benjamin Rush’s advocacy reflected earlier writings of his beliefs in a strong religious and moral foundation for all people. In 1806 he wrote:

    “The only foundation for a useful education in a republic is to be laid in religion. Without this there can be no virtue, and without virtue there can be no liberty, and liberty is the object and life of all republican governments.”

    William Penn

    Little did William Penn know that his vision of establishing a society that was godly, virtuous and exemplary for all would one day birth the freedoms of a nation. After establishing Pennsylvania with land granted by King Charles the second, Penn set out to plan a city called Philadelphia. Years later William Penn’s historic city would become the first capital of the United States and out of it the nation’s foundational structure would be laid.

    Although Penn is best remembered for his vision of a democratic government and peaceful co-existence with the native Indians, in 1682, William Penn’s beliefs of government fundamentals echo those of biblical principles:

    “It is impossible, Penn wrote, that any people of government should ever prosper, where men render not unto God, that which is God’s, as well as to Caesar, that which is Caesar’s.”

    James Wilson

    One of the lesser-known patriots and founding fathers of our nation was Scottish born James Wilson. The young lawyer’s writings on the British Parliament’s authority impressed members of the continental congress so much they elected him to the body in 1775. The following year, Wilson signed the Declaration of Independence and later the United States Constitution.

    Serving as a United States Supreme Court Justice until his death, James Wilson realized there was a much higher law than man’s to consider. When questioning what the ultimate cause of moral obligation is, Wilson determined, “I give it this answer, the will of God. This is the supreme law. His just and full right of imposing laws, and our duty in obeying them, are the sources of our moral obligations.”

    George Washington

    In May of 1776, fighting was well under way in the American Revolution. For General George Washington it was a stressful time. Under his command in New York he had about 7 thousand men. The rag tag army was poorly trained. They were about to face some thirty thousand soldiers from the most highly trained and successful military force in the world. The Americans were outnumbered and outgunned. As they waited in New York for the onslaught of British military power, Washington issued orders for his troops to pray for the campaign ahead.

    On May 17, 1776, he wrote that that day was, “…to be observed as a day of fasting humiliation and prayer, humbly to supplicate the mercy of almighty God, that it would please Him to pardon all our manifold sins and transgressions, and to prosper the arms of the united colonies, and finally establish the peace and freedom of America upon a solid and lasting foundation.”

    After the Revolution, Washington was elected America’s first president. Years later, as he prepared to leave office and return to his beloved Mount Vernon, foremost in his mind was the need for the young nation to stay neutral on foreign issues until it grew stronger. George Washington chose to send this message to the nation in a farewell address — not in a speech, but in the September, 1796 Philadelphia newspapers. In it, the president advised Americans to value the newly formed republic and its constitution. But Washington cautioned that the country’s success depended not only on national strength but also on two essential factors:

    “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.”

    Here’s a “wow” statistic from the U.S. Forest Service: In 2018, wilderness rangers buried more than 400 piles of human waste found scattered throughout the Enchantments near Leavenworth, which, minus the poo, is one of the loveliest wilderness destinations in all of Washington.

    A bonus “wow”: The Enchantments camping zone, because of its immense popularity, is equipped with nine privies, all intended to make improper plopping avoidable. Nevertheless, on more than 400 occasions last year, according to a Forest Service spokesperson, visitors decided to plop with impunity and just walk away.

    What is going on?

    “It’s unbelievable how much surface pooping is going on out there,” said Craig Romano, a year-round hiker and author of 20 hiking guides for The Mountaineers Books. “I’m coming across it in places I never expected, even remote areas. I find it in the middle of a trail. And toilet paper. Streams of it! What I’m seeing is incredible. It’s absolutely disgusting.”

    More than six months after a Texas woman was banned from a Walmart by Wichita Falls police for drinking wine from a Pringles can, a second woman was reportedly banned for eating cake. According to Wichita Falls Police Department spokesman Jeff Hughes, officers received a report June 25 of a woman who had entered the Walmart, ate half of a cake and refused to pay for the other half. Hughes said the woman was banned from the store by police for the theft, the Wichita Falls Times Record News reported.  In that case, which happened at another Wichita Falls Walmart, police received a call about a woman drinking wine from the Pringles can while riding on an electric shopping cart in the parking lot. Walmart employees had requested officers ban the woman who reportedly made the parking lot ride for several hours starting around 6:30 a.m. When officers arrived, they found the woman in a nearby restaurant and notified her that she had been barred from the Walmart location. The story garnered national attention, with late night host Stephen Colbert mentioning the incident while drinking from a can of the chips and “The Late Show’s” Twitter account tweeting about it.

    The pastor’s wife is always there. Sometimes in the background, sometimes with a welcoming smile up front, sometimes noticed and appreciated, sometimes being silently judged. Your pastor’s wife: the powerful force behind most church leaders often perceived as a mystery by the rest of the church. It doesn’t have to be that way.

    What if we just asked our pastor’s wife to candidly, honestly, even anonymously, share some of their secrets? What if we invited them to share their hearts and tell us what they wished the church knew?

    I posed a simple, open-ended question to a panel of pastors’ wives in different states, from different denominations, with various years of service: “If you could tell the church a few things about your role as a pastor’s wife, what would you say?”

    The women selected are the wives of music ministers, children’s leaders, senior pastors and youth pastors. Some of them serve in churches with large staff and even larger budgets, others in newer church plants, and even some from old and barely surviving congregations. Despite such different backgrounds, their responses were strangely similar and in several cases, almost identical.

    I’ve sat for coffee, exchanged emails and had lengthy conversations with many who freely shared their secrets with me in exchange for the promise of anonymity. What follows is a condensed collection of their words.

    1) “I wish people knew that we struggle to have family time.”

    There was one common response that I received from every single pastor’s wife. Every. Single. One. Over and over again, many pastors’ wives shared numerous occasions where planned vacations had been cut short (wouldn’t that be hard?). They told me tales of family evenings being rearranged for crises of church members, middle of the night emergencies and regular interruptions. A true day off is rare; even on scheduled days off, their husbands are essentially on call 24/7.

    2) “Almost every day, I’m afraid of screwing it all up.”

    They don’t have it all together. They battle many of the same issues every other woman battles: marriage issues, extended-family difficulties, sickness, finances, children who make poor decisions, fear and insecurities. Some seasons of life are obviously harder than others; but remember, ministry wives are not Wonder Woman with special powers. Please have a little mercy and extend grace.

    3) “Being a pastor’s wife is THE loneliest thing I’ve ever done and for so many reasons.”

    Personally, I think this is surprising to many (it was to me). Several ladies shared the difficulties of finding friendships that are safe, being looked at (or treated) differently, and even the desire to be invited for an occasional ladies night out. One woman shared, “Invite us to something just to get to know us. We like being known.” People in the church often assume that the pastor’s wife is always invited and popular. In reality, for whatever reason, many ladies fear befriending them. On Sunday mornings, pastors’ wives are often sitting solo, and those with children are essentially single parenting.

    4) “It is OK and welcomed to have conversations with me about things that do not pertain to church, or even Jesus. There I said it!”

    They have a variety of interests. Believe it or not, many pastor’s wives went to college and had full-time careers before becoming “Mrs. Pastor’s Wife.” They have hobbies, likes and dislikes, and though they often serve beside their husband, they are individuals with their own unique gifts. Do not make the mistake of assuming your pastor’s wife has the same personality as her husband. One wife shared that as newly weds when they announced their engagement, people regularly commented on how good of a singer she must be (because her husband-to-be was a music minister). When she shared that she sounded more like a dying cat than an elegant song bird, the shock on their faces was evident.

    5) “Sundays are sometimes my least favorite day. Wait—am I allowed to say that?”

    Sundays are hard. And long. And there is no rest. To a pastor’s wife, Sunday means an early morning of rushing around to have the family ready in their “Sunday Best.” Although you may not see your pastor’s wife on the platform, rest assured, Sunday is equally tiring for most (all) of them.

    Garden Grove Shoppers Frustrated By Homeless Population In Parking Lot – CBS Los Angeles

    GARDEN GROVE (CBSLA) — Shoppers at a Garden Grove Walmart say they’re being harassed by a group of homeless people in the parking lot, but police say they cannot do anything about it.

    Neighbors say a homeless camp has popped up in the parking lot leading to vandalism and harassment, and they say Walmart will not ask them to leave.

    Security guards and crews to pick up trash have been hired for area parking lots to combat some issues, but shoppers still say they feel unsafe and frustrated.

    “There’s just a lot of homeless, a lot, asking for money,” said one shopper who was there with a child. “I don’t come after it’s dark.”

    And when area cops are called out to the scene, their hands are tied.

    “Many times they sit there and say, ‘Can’t you just arrest them?” But it doesn’t work that way,” Brian Meers, a Garden Grove police officer assigned to the homelessness problem, said. “Most of the violations in the state are misdemeanor crimes now and they get out in six hours, and the reality of it is that they’re going to go right back to doing what they were doing before.”

    Walmart did not respond to a request for comment.
