  • Trump administration oversees five-year high in approved citizenship applications

Trump administration oversees five-year high in approved citizenship applications

Homeland Security reached a five-year high in approvals of citizenship applications last year, and swore in more people as naturalized citizens as well, according to the new statistical report released Friday night. Those numbers contradict the criticisms of congressional Democrats who had complained about backlogs building at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Homeland Security branch that handles legal immigration. The new report also suggests that far from a crackdown, the government is processing more asylum-seeker petitions than any of the last four years. That included a 61 percent increase from 2017 to 2018 in affirmative asylum applications — though refugee interviews are down from more than 1250,000 in 2016, the last year under President Barack Obama, to just 26,400 in fiscal year 2018 under President Trump. Still, when the whole panoply of humanitarian programs is considered — asylum, refugees, crime victim visas, Temporary Protected Status and screening for credible fear or reasonable fear of persecution — the numbers were 32 percent higher than fiscal year 2017. Credible fear and reasonable fear are first steps on the asylum track.

USCIS’s workload has become contentious in recent years, with immigrant-rights groups accusing the Trump administration of building a bureaucratic “wall” to deny people the chance to enter the U.S. legally. The accusation is a play on their disdain for Mr. Trump’s border wall intended to stop illegal immigration. Hispanic Democrats in Congress say things are so bad that they requested — and have been granted — an investigation to be done by the Government Accountability Office. Rep. Joaquin Castro, chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said the case backlog is an example of “President Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda.” Yet the backlog in citizenship applications, for example, exploded during the end of the Obama administration. The Washington Times, which tracked the explosion at the time, sought comment from immigrant-rights activists and lawmakers, including Democrats, but didn’t find many who blamed the Obama administration for the slow processing. The new numbers from USCIS also detail some of the more hidden parts of the agency’s work, such as its efforts to weed out fraud in legal immigration applications. Experts say fraud is rampant, but the agency has not released any major fraud assessments in years.Still, the Fraud Detection and National Security division reported 149,3000 investigative leads or actions year — a 14 percent increase over 2017. That included 30,400 tips of fraud, 7,600 national security matters and nearly 17,000 public safety matters.FDNS also reported screening social media in 11,700 cases.

Google Compute Engine Incident #19003 We are experiencing a multi-region issue with Google Compute Engine

Incident began at 2019-06-02 12:25 (all times are US/Pacific).

Jun 02, 20 12:25 We are investigating an issue with Google Compute Engine. We will provide more information by Sunday, 2019-06-02 12:45 US/Pacific.

One Google insider explains (via YCombinator):

I work on Google Cloud (but disclaimer, I’m on vacation and so not much use to you!).

We’re having what appears to be a serious networking outage. It’s disrupting everything, including unfortunately the tooling we usually use to communicate across the company about outages.

There are backup plans, of course, but I wanted to at least come here to say: you’re not crazy, nothing is lost (to those concerns downthread), but there is serious packet loss at the least. You’ll have to wait for someone actually involved in the incident to say more.

  • Series of small quakes felt across Inland Empire, a ‘perennial hotspot’ for temblors

Series of small quakes felt across Inland Empire, a ‘perennial hotspot’ for temblors

A magnitude 3.3 earthquake was felt in parts of Southern California on Sunday afternoon, one in a series of quakes to hit the Riverside County area.  The latest quake occurred at 4:36 p.m. and was centered on Glen Avon, south of Fontana. The seismic activity continued into Monday morning with dozens of new small quakes.  According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quakes were felt across swaths of the Inland Empire, a region that has had hundreds of small quakes over the weekend, including one that registered a magnitude of 3.1.  On Friday, seismologist Lucy Jones wrote on Twitter that small earthquakes can be felt if they’re shallow — only 1 mile underground instead of 5 miles or more. She called the area a “perennial hotspot” of small, clustered quakes and nothing out of the ordinary for California.

It has been almost five years since California experienced its last earthquake of magnitude 6 or stronger. But scientists say the calm period will end, with warnings about seismic dangers ranging from the Big One on the San Andreas fault to catastrophes that could come from lesser-known faults, such as the Hayward or Newport-Inglewood.  Researchers also recently discovered that the state has experienced 10 times more earthquakes than previously known. They documented 1.8 million earthquakes in Southern California over the last decade, the vast majority so small that they had been undetectable to computing systems. Previously, only 180,000 earthquakes were on record for the last 10 years.  Scientists are now better able to identify previously undiscovered faults, detect patterns of moving earthquake swarms — like the one in Riverside County — and identify faint clusters of foreshocks that occur before a larger earthquake

  • That major Google outage meant some Nest users couldn’t unlock doors or use the AC

That major Google outage meant some Nest users couldn’t unlock doors or use the AC

If you’re a Google user, you probably noticed some trouble last night when trying to access Google-owned services. Last night, Google reported several issues with its Cloud Platform, which made several Google sites slow or inoperable. Because of this, many of Google’s sites and services–including Gmail, G Suite, and YouTube–were slow or completely down for users in the U.S. and Europe.

But an especially annoying side effect of Google Cloud’s downtime was that Nest-branded smart home products for some users just failed to work. According to reports from Twitter, many people were unable to use their Nest thermostats, Nest smart locks, and Nest cameras during the downtime. This essentially meant that because of a cloud storage outage, people were prevented from getting inside their homes, using their AC, and monitoring their babies.

For Google’s part, the company says a “network congestion issue in eastern USA” was causing the problems and that those issues have now been resolved as of 4 p.m. PT on Sunday. Still, the downtime of their Cloud Platform goes a long way to showing what can happen in an age when smart home technology requires always being connected to the cloud.

  • Napping More Often Can Boost Heart and Brain Health, Reduce Stress and Much More

Napping More Often Can Boost Heart and Brain Health, Reduce Stress and Much More

It’s about time that naps were taken more seriously.

It’s no lie that in a modern society, many of us are sleep deprived, so much so that power naps may actually be of benefit to us all.

Napping could so effective that it may help boost our brains, improving problem solving, verbal memory, perceptual learning, object learning and statistical learning. This in turn will improve our reaction time, help with math, logical reasoning, treat fatigue and of course, improve our moods.

The benefits don’t end there – this aids to alleviate stress, assists in weight management, better heart health and lowers blood pressure.

Based on the National Sleep Foundation, naps can be put into three different categories:

    — Planned napping (also known as preparatory napping) involves taking a nap before one actually gets sleepy. This technique can be used to prevent tiredness and fatigue, or when one knows that he will be up later than the normal bed time

    — Emergency napping occurs when one suddenly feels very tired and cannot go on with the activity he was engaged in at that time. This nap type often helps to treat drowsy driving or fatigue while using heavy and dangerous machinery.

    — Habitual napping is a routine practiced when a person takes a nap at the same time each day. Young children usually fall asleep at about the same time every afternoon, or adults take a short name every day after lunch.

A Greek study found that adult men who napped 3 times a week were 37% less likely to die from heart related illness compared to others who didn’t nap.

Many countries customarily nap too. Think of the famous siesta in Spain. The USA and UK likewise are not very supportive of napping in the afternoons and both countries suffer the most heart attacks worldwide as the leading cause of death.

Not only do naps improve mental function, they also provide physiological benefits, boosting rejuvenation.

In 1995, NASA came forth with a groundbreaking study in which they evaluated the effects of 747 pilots taking naps, allowed 40 min a day. The findings revealed vigilance performance improvements from 16% in median reaction time to 34% in lapses compared to the No-Rest Group.

In 2008, studies showed that naps actually work better than caffeine when it comes to improving mental functioning.

A short nap has many benefits, the length will determine the benefits you’ll experience:

20 Minute Nap – It enhances memory, mental alertness, and motor learning skills.

20 To 30 Minute Nap – It boosts creativity and boosts memory.

30 To 60 Minute Nap – It enhances decision-making skills and memory

60 To 90 Minute Nap – It ensures REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, so it is the most beneficial nap type. It helps you reset the brain, and has a dramatic effect on the problem-solving skills.

Therefore, we could all definitely benefit from a nap during the day, unless you suffer from a sleeping disorder – you may find that napping could hinder your already trying sleeping pattern.

  • Greek boy overcomes Down Syndrome and writes book to help other kids in need   — Greek City Times

Greek boy overcomes Down Syndrome and writes book to help other kids in need   — Greek City Times

It is not often that you hear of children with Down Syndrome being able to speak four languages fluently, playing three musical instruments and wanting to become a scientist, however, Greek boy Joachim is an exception and not only is he able to do all of the above, he has also written a book, which has already helped hundreds of families dealing with Down Syndrome.

Unfortunately in Greece, like many other countries around the world, there is no proper support to help children with special needs, especially those with Down syndrome.

Joachim’s mother Mrs. Katerina Frosini gave birth to her fourth child 22 years ago and was told about her son’s issue before birth and decided she would do everything in her power to raise him and care for him as best she could, along with her other three sons.

By the age of four, Joachim was able to sit down but was unable to stand up and could not speak. A doctor spoke to his parents about a program named the Glen Doman Institute in America, which is a well-known organisation that helps children with special needs.

His parents went to America and learned everything about this program, which eventually gave their young son a new life.

Now at the age of 22, Joachim may not have completed the last two grades of high school, but he’s already working in his father’s accounting office and leads a normal life, being able to communicate and having independence, which is rare for many children with Down Syndrome.

Along with the help of his mother, Joachim also wrote a book titled “I’m Joachim … Learn to Overcome Down Syndrome,” which has already helped hundreds of families to deal with the situation properly so that children with Down Syndrome can lead a better life and inspire those with special needs.

  • If You’re Too Busy for Date Night, You’re Too Busy

If You’re Too Busy for Date Night, You’re Too Busy

The plain and simple truth is date nights make relationships.

You’re probably thinking, that sounds great and in a perfect world date nights are doable, but who has the time, the money, or the childcare (if applicable) to go on dates?

As we explain in our new book, Eight Dates: Essential Conversations for a Lifetime of Love, date nights are always doable, even if it means getting a little creative in carving your time out together.

It also helps to define what a date night is and what a date night isn’t. Watching Netflix on the couch together while scrolling through your Instagram feed is not a date night.

A date night (or date afternoon or morning) is a pre-planned time where the two of you leave your work life and work-in-the-home life, and spend a set amount of time focusing on each other, and really talking and listening to each other.

Here are the most common date night obstacles and how to overcome them.

    Time
Life can feel so incredibly busy that the thought of finding time for yet one more obligation feels overwhelming. But a date night is more than an obligation—it’s a commitment to your relationship. It helps to carve out a specific and regular time each week and make this “appointment” a priority.

Unless someone is in the emergency room, make date night a “no matter what” event. Set aside time like you would for a birthday, or church, or an anniversary, or any other special event you celebrate in your life together.

Date nights should be sacred times to honor your relationship. Think of them as such, schedule them in your calendars for as much time as possible—even if it’s just for an hour, show up no matter what.

    Money
Dates don’t have to be expensive. In fact, they don’t have to cost anything at all. Pack a picnic, go for a walk, sit in a park. There are endless ways to spend time together without breaking the bank. In each of the Eight Dates, we make suggestions about where best to go on your date depending on the topic of conversation. These are only suggestions.

We used to have a cheap date by getting dressed up and going to the beautiful Hotel Sorrento in Seattle, and pretending that we were hotel guests. We would sit in the beautiful lobby in front of a fire and nurse one drink all evening. We would answer each other’s open-ended questions for hours.

    Childcare
Childcare is often the stickler for couples who want to go on date nights but have young children at home. Childcare does not have to be expensive or stressful. At times, we would trade childcare with other couples, so both couples could enjoy date nights. If that’s not possible, see if a trusted family member or close friend will help you in your quest to spend sacred time together.

Look for inexpensive babysitters in your neighborhood, or ask friends for recommendations. Some parents worry about leaving their children with other people, but if you find a safe and reliable person to watch your children, you’re helping them learn that other people, besides their parents, are trustworthy and reliable.

Children are incredibly resilient, and by showing your commitment to your relationship with your partner, you’re nurturing your children by ensuring that they will be raised by parents in a healthy and stable relationship.

Too often, especially after couples have children, date night becomes a random, freak act of nature. Don’t let it. If you’re too busy for date night, you’re too busy.

  • Occidental seeks edge over Chevron’s bid for Anadarko by sweetening its own offer with more cash | Financial Post

Occidental seeks edge over Chevron’s bid for Anadarko by sweetening its own offer with more cash | Financial Post

Occidental Petroleum Corp. moved a step closer to sealing its proposed US$38-billion acquisition of Anadarko Petroleum Corp. after it sweetened its offer and agreed to sell assets owned by the target company.

Occidental increased the cash portion of its bid to 78 per cent from 50 per cent on Sunday. It also pledged to cover the US$1-billion breakup fee Anadarko would have to pay for abandoning an already-agreed to deal with Chevron Corp., and said Occidental shareholders won’t be required to vote on the takeover.

The heftier buyout proposal came just hours after French energy giant Total SA agreed to buy operations in four African nations for US$8.8 billion, contingent upon Occidental completing a takeover of Texas-based Anadarko.

The Total agreement augments billionaire Warren Buffett’s US$10-billion commitment to Occidental, which has faced investor criticism for its unsolicited April 24 offer to best Chevron’s takeover of Anadarko. While Occidental is a storied name in American oil and operates across three continents, it’s just one-fifth Chevron’s market value and its pursuit of Anadarko was seen by some as quixotic.

Occidental Chief Executive Officer Vicki Hollub, who has been pursuing Anadarko for almost two years, has grown frustrated at the company’s unwillingness to acquiesce to her advances.

“We remain perplexed at your apparent resistance to obtaining far more value for Anadarko shareholders which has been expressed clearly through our interactions over the last week,” Hollub said in a letter to Anadarko’s board dated Sunday.

    Stunning Rebuff

Anadarko said in a statement that it will review the revised offer and reaffirmed its existing recommendation to shareholders to accept the Chevron deal.

The Total agreement may ameliorate concerns that Occidental would take on too much debt and shorten the amount of time the company would be out of the market for share buybacks, said Bill Nygren, chief investment officer of Harris Associates LP, which manages US$120 billion and owns about 3 per cent of Anadarko.

An Occidental-Anadarko accord would be a stunning rebuff for Chevron CEO Mike Wirth just 15 months into his tenure at the head of the world’s third-largest oil explorer by market value. Sunday’s emergence of Total as an Occidental ally pits two of the world’s supermajor oil drillers on opposite sides of the industry’s biggest takeover battle in years.

    Gulfstream V

Hollub has pursued Anadarko amid on-and-off talks since late 2017, to no avail.

In an apparent acknowledgment that more was needed to get the deal across the line, Hollub flew to Omaha, Nebraska, on April 28 to visit Buffett. The legendary investor announced two days later he had agreed to pay US$10 billion in exchange for a slug of Occidental preferred stock and warrants, contingent on a successful takeover of Anadarko.

“With the OXY deal looking safer for APC to accept, I’d say this may force CVX to match the OXY bid or lose out on these terrific assets,” Nygren said in an email, referring to the stock tickers of the suitors and target.

    Icahn Arrives

At the heart of the tug-of-war over Anadarko is a fight for supremacy in the Permian Basin, the world’s largest oil patch. Chevron announced an ambitious, multibillion-dollar plan earlier this year to boost its fracking activities in the region, and buying Anadarko would turbo-boost its Permian growth. For Occidental, the deal is about securing its position as the dominant producer in the basin.

Buying Anadarko would be the biggest oil industry deal in four years and mark an end to an era of austerity among explorers chastened by a decline in crude prices and chastised by investors for poor returns. The pressure on Occidental and Chevron shares in the past two weeks showed investors were worried the industry was returning to the old ways, when profligate spending and bold deals were de rigueur.

Indeed, the controversy stirred up by Occidental’s bid appears to have attracted another interloper. Billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn has built a small stake in the company, people familiar with the matter said on May 3.

    What Bloomberg Intelligence Says

“Carl Icahn’s minor Occidental Petroleum stake may not be enough to reframe the debate over Anadarko, even as some shareholders remain skeptical of both the deal’s impact and the costs Berkshire extracted to help finance it. We believe Icahn is making a push to sway the outcome, as he has a stake in the Permian, Occidental’s prime motivator in pursuing Anadarko. Icahn inherited a position in Diamondback Energy, a midsized Permian E&P firm, through its purchase of Energen, a holding he initially pushed to seek alternatives. If Icahn can derail Occidental’s bid for Anadarko, the former would pursue a better-fitting, more digestible E&P target with a stronger concentration in the basin.” — Vincent G. Piazza, senior industry analyst, and Evan Lee, associate analyst

Occidental shares rose in after-market trading on Friday after the news of Icahn’s involvement, signalling that fresh doubt about the deal’s prospects was a positive catalyst for investors. On Monday, following the Total accord and the revised takeover offer, they had erased those gains and were down 1.6 per cent. Anadarko rose as much as 2.4 per cent to US$74.50. Chevron was unchanged.

    Four Days

Anadarko doesn’t just operate in the Permian, and both bidders face being saddled with unwanted assets — Chevron has also said it will sell off billions of dollars of operations post merger.

The Total deal means the French company will take on oil operations in Ghana, Algeria and South Africa, as well as a massive liquefied natural gas project in Mozambique. Total is already a major player in LNG while Occidental has no current involvement in that market and had already indicated that it was looking to sell the facility.

Investors now await a decision from the Anadarko board. Having previously rebuffed proposals from Occidental for more than a year, Anadarko agreed to start negotiations with the company even before the cash portion was lifted late Sunday. If Anadarko recommends a merger with Occidental, Chevron will have four days to make a counter offer or walk away.

  • Planned Parenthood Exec Turned Pro-Life Advocate Abby Johnson Challenges Alyssa Milano On Abortion | Daily Wire

Planned Parenthood Exec Turned Pro-Life Advocate Abby Johnson Challenges Alyssa Milano On Abortion | Daily Wire

On Friday, Planned Parenthood executive turned pro-life advocate Abby Johnson challenged actress Alyssa Milano over her efforts to expand abortion, most recently in the state of Georgia.

Johnson, who wrote the memoir which the pro-life film “Unplanned” is based on, essentially told Milano and her “tiny bun” to go see the film or shut her mouth.

“I’m hoping that Alyssa Milano will muster up the courage to go see the “Unplanned” movie,” Johnson posted on Twitter, tagging the actress.

The fiery Texan added, “If you are willing to advocate for abortion, but unwilling to actually see what you support, then you and your tiny bun really have no relevancy in this conversation.”

I’m hoping that @Alyssa_Milano will muster up the courage to go see the @UnplannedMovie. If you are willing to advocate for abortion, but unwilling to actually see what you support, then you and your tiny bun really have no relevancy in this conversation.

    — Abby Johnson (@AbbyJohnson)

To the shock of absolutely no one, Milano has yet to respond to Johnson, though the tweet has racked up close to 25,000 likes as of Saturday morning.

The former “Who’s the Boss” actress has made herself the face of a campaign to stop a pro-life bill in Georgia, H.B. 481, the Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act, dubbed the “heartbeat bill.” The legislation, which is awaiting signature from Governor Brian Kemp (R-GA), will make it a crime to murder unborn children with a detectable heartbeat, which typically happens around six weeks gestation.

In a letter penned by Milano and signed by some 50 actors, Hollywood elites are threatening to boycott the state if the heartbeat bill passes.

“We can’t imagine being elected officials who had to say to their constituents, “I enacted a law that was so evil, it chased billions of dollars out of our state’s economy.” It’s not the most effective campaign slogan, but rest assured we’ll make it yours should it come to pass,” the letter threatens. “This is the precipice on which you stand.”

I will be supporting the women of Georgia as we stand in solidarity for all women’s rights and hand deliver the below letter to Brian Kemp at 5pm EST this evening. I will broadcast live here on Twitter. #WeWontGoBack pic.twitter.com/gcZqlrW2kB

    — Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano)

Johnson actually had a more direct reply to this on Facebook last week.

“You know, these actors who keep saying they are going to boycott certain states because they are trying to ban abortion…I just don’t believe them,” posted the pro-life advocate. “I mean, I wish they would just go ahead and do it. They said they were going to leave the country after Trump was elected and they are still flipping here. Just go away already! Stop getting our hopes up! And while they are at it, stay out of Texas, too.”

As stated on her website, Johnson spent eight years at the abortion mill, quickly rising through the ranks to become the company’s youngest clinic director at the time. She began to notice that “[a]bortion was a product Planned Parenthood was selling, not an unfortunate necessity they were fighting to decrease.” In October 2009, Johnson resigned after assisting with an ultrasound-guided abortion of a 13-week-old baby.

“At that moment, she fully realized what abortion actually was and what she had dedicated her life to,” says the site. “As it washed over Abby, a dramatic transformation had occurred. Desperate and confused, Abby sought help from a local pro-life group. She swore that she would begin to advocate for life in the womb and expose abortion for what it truly is.”

“Unplanned” has exploded at the box office despite large TV networks refusing to run the film’s ads, big tech censorship, and a controversial “R” rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

Milano claims to believe women, to care about “issues plaguing humanity,” but, as of now, she has yet to listen to the other side of the abortion debate, notably from a woman who’s experienced the horrors of abortion and its industry firsthand.
