An American tourist has died in a shark attack while snorkeling with her family in the Bahamas

An American tourist has died in a shark attack while snorkeling with her family in the Bahamas, authorities say. Royal Bahamas Police Force Deputy Commissioner Paul Rolle says 21-year-old Jordan Lindsey of Torrance, California, was attacked by three sharks near Rose Island around 2 p.m. Wednesday. The U.S. State Department confirmed to USA TODAY that a U.S. citizen died of her injuries following a shark attack on June 26. KABC-TV says Lindsey’s parents and other family members saw the sharks and yelled a warning but she didn’t hear them in time. Officials say her arms, legs and buttocks were bitten and her right arm was severed.

She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. CBSLA reported that Lindsey is expected to undergo an autopsy in Nassau.

Denver dad in critical condition on Dominican Republic vacation

A Denver dad was so sick that he was booted off his return flight from the Dominican Republic, and has spent the past three days there in critical condition — vomiting, alone and screaming in pain in a hospital bed, his relatives said.

Khalid Adkins became so ill on the trip with his daughter that he wasn’t allowed to fly home Sunday — and has been forced to stay on the embattled Caribbean island, news station KDVR reported.

“He said, ‘They pulled me off the plane and made me go to the hospital,’” his sister-in-law, Marla Strick, told the news station.

Strick said Adkins was “dripping sweat and went to the bathroom to throw up and that’s when they kicked him off the plane.”

His mystery illness comes as dozens of tourists have reported becoming sick on the island, where at least 11 Americans have died in the last year.

Adkins was brought to a hospital in Santo Domingo, where doctors told the family he was in critical condition, according to the news station. His relatives said they haven’t received an official diagnosis, but he’s experiencing kidney failure and having trouble breathing.

“His leg started to swell and that’s why he couldn’t get up. And he started sweating and vomiting,” Strick said. “He is just yelling and in pain, so he couldn’t talk to me.”

The hospital told the family they could try to get him dialysis on the island or he could take a $20,000 medevac flight home.

A GoFundMe page was launched to help try to raise funds to get him back to the US.

“We are trying anything to get him home!” the page said. “It is the most devastating thing ever!! They said we can medivac him home but it is 20,000 we are lost!! It’s a terrible nightmare!!”

Dominican Republic tourism has dropped more than 74%

Tourism to the Dominican Republic has taken a massive hit as the embattled Caribbean nation grapples with an onslaught of reports revealing American tourists are dying and falling sick there in droves.

Trips booked to the island dropped by 74.3% for the months of July and August compared to the same period last year, according to a study from ForwardKeys, which analyzes more than 17 million daily bookings.

The number of trips canceled to the country also increased by 51.2% between June 1 and June 19.

The cancellations spiked by 70% on June 10, the day that 53-year-old Leyla Cox died at a Punta Cana resort. The Staten Island mom’s family was told she died of a heart attack during a birthday trip to the island.

“My deepest sympathies go out to the families of the American tourists who have passed away,” said Olivier Ponti, VP insights of ForwardKeys. “Their recent and tragic deaths appear to have had a dramatic impact on travel to the Dominican Republic. Our analysis of leisure travel shows a striking correlation.”

How to Treat a Sprained Ankle While Hiking – Five Spot Green Living

How to Treat a Sprained Ankle While Hiking

I will admit it I am not the most coordinated and when I am out hiking I usually hurt myself in some way. Have you ever had an injury while hiking or camping? Here is some information on how to treat a sprained ankle while out in the woods.

    R.I.C.E. treatment

RICE is going to be the most common suggestion because it is what helps the most. When you are out on a hike or camping, you can’t really get to a hospital or urgent care right away. This is why RICE is so important. It helps to reduce the swelling and pain before you are able to safely get somewhere for proper medical attention.

RICE can be used for an ankle sprain, wrist sprain, strain, and other soft tissue injuries. Here is what this stands for:

Try to find help without walking around on your own if you can. Call out for help or use your phone to call someone.

  • Homemade Tick Repellent Recipe – Five Spot Green Living

Homemade Tick Repellent Recipe – Five Spot Green Living

Lately I’ve been finding teeny tiny ticks on the dog – and I almost wouldn’t have seen it but for the fact that I’ve been hyper-vigilant about checking for ticks. It looked like a piece of dirt!! But those teeny tiny ticks still bite and they still transmit lyme disease.

Last week I made this homemade tick repellent recipe using tea tree oil and a few other essential oils and low and behold – NO MORE TICKS!

    What is tea tree oil?

Tea tree oil is derived from the leaves of the tree using steam distillation or a similar process. A natural tick repellent can be made for both animals and humans using tea tree oil as an active ingredient. If you are not into DIY or don’t have time, scroll down to the bottom to find a ready-made mixture you can apply easily to repel ticks naturally!

In small concentrations (.1% to 1%), tea tree oil is tolerated and safe for cats and dogs.

I love Rocky Mountain Oils because of their quality 100% pure essential oils that require no minimum purchase and always gives FREE shipping! Plus they always have specials going on!

Rocky Mountain Oils’ essential oils are verified by a third-party, independent lab. GC/MS tests verify purity and quality of the oils sold so you can look at the bottom of the bottle to find your individual batch code and then input that number into our website to pull up the GC/MS test results.

Geranium essential oil is safe to use around kids and this study showed it as very effective in repelling ticks.

This study from the National Institutes for Health found that geranium oil works comparably to DEET in repelling ticks. This is for humans and NOT dogs.

According to this study in Environmental Entomology, cedarwood oil repels fire ants and actually kills ticks! It is so toxic to ticks but safe for kids!

If you do happen to get bit by a tick, learn how to remove a tick properly.

Never apply tea tree oil directly to the skin as it could cause an allergic reaction, particularly if the oil is highly concentrated. Mix the oil in some carrier oil like sweet almond oil to dilute it a bit.

For best results, use a glass bottle. Oils such as tea tree oil react with plastic and may cause dangerous chemicals to leech into your repellent. Before each use, shake the bottle vigorously to thoroughly mix the oils. When applying to pets, rub the repellent under their fur so that it reaches their skin.

You can also use a plastic spray bottle that is labeled as safe for oils, like this one.

    Ingredients
2 ounces liquid oil such as jojoba oil (which is non-greasy), olive or almond oil.
    15 drops geranium essential oil
    15 drops tea tree oil
    15 drops cedarwood oil

    Directions

    Note
If you prefer, you could add peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, or camphor oil or lemongrass.

Alternative to making your own homemade tick repellent

Don’t have time or patience to make the Natural Tick Repellent Tea Tree Oil Recipe? Don’t have all the oils on hand? No worries, you can get

    Bug Off! Mist Spray Recipe

    75 drops Bug Off!
    4 ounces Distilled Water

Add all ingredients to a 4 ounce, fine mist spray bottle. Shake well before every use. You can apply to areas where you might be bit. (If the spray is for your pet, use 10-15 drops) You can also use a light carrier oil or witch hazel instead of water if you are spraying on the skin.

    Bug Off! Carpet Freshener Recipe

    100 drops Bug Off!
    1/2 cup Baking Soda

Mix all ingredients in a ziploc type bag. Seal and massage bag until essential oils are thoroughly mixed in. Pour into a glass jar and seal with a lid. Sprinkle over carpeting, leave for 10–15 minutes and vacuum. Use when you have a big problem with ants and other bugs.

  • Should You Bring Your Gun To Church For Protection?

Should You Bring Your Gun To Church For Protection?

A Rabbi urges his congregation to carry guns at synagogue after contemplating the Pittsburgh attack on worshipers last year.

All too often these days we hear of people shooting up places of worship, which apparently begs the question: Should you bring your gun to church or whatever your worshiping body calls the building you worship in?

News this morning brings me the story of a Rabbi who is now urging his congregation to carry in Synagogue. Rabbi Rodkin had this to say:

I know it sounds horrible, but I think it’s a very logical approach for the situation we’re in. I don’t want people to have guns. But I think to protect our families, it’s a necessity now.

I applaud his decision to ask his congregants to be armed.

I think this is a no brainer, personally, just as long as you can legally bring your gun with you. What I mean, is that not all states allow a gun owner to carry in a place of worship–though I think that is reckless and extremely stupid on any state who says you cannot carry in a place of worship.

Why? Because they cannot guarantee your safety.

South Carolina for example doesn’t allow citizens to carry in church or other designated places of worship without prior permission. I knew that, by the way, because I have our Concealed Carry App downloaded on my phone that tells me such things. If you don’t have the app, you should download it.

It is very useful, free, and loaded with knowledge. You can find it here.

    Anyway …

If you can legally carry in your place of worship and feel comfortable doing so, then you should carry in your place of worship. Period. If not, then don’t. I won’t try to make you.

But if you do decide to carry in church, I do urge you to get trained up a bit more on the use of your gun to make sure you are as ready as possible.

I’d even go one step further and try to put together some sort of team who train more regularly that is made up of people who are always carrying. I’ve visited churches in Pennsylvania with armed security, and appreciated the fact that they were there.

But, here’s the thing, it doesn’t matter how many active shooter drills you do or even how many security guards you have in your place of worship — chances are good that nothing will go according to plan and the security guard may get taken out.

Training for as many different scenarios as you can is a good idea, and make sure you’re comfortable shooting your gun.

As someone who is a practicing Christian, meaning that I go to church on a regular basis, I believe it is important to protect my family. That is something I’ve been charged with and I take it seriously. I carry when I’m at church and refuse to let any other person take on the role of protecting my children and wife.

Should you carry a gun to church, synagogue, or mosque? Absolutely. Why wouldn’t you?

Again, here is the link to our app. It’s totally worth the download as it has reciprocity maps built in, all the gun laws for all the states, every podcast episode for all of our shows, all of our articles, and more. It can’t hurt.

Find out more about carrying in church, here.

  • Hundreds gather in Victoria for largest-ever Indigenous languages conference

Hundreds gather in Victoria for largest-ever Indigenous languages conference

WATCH: It’s being called the biggest event of its kind. Hundreds gathered Tuesday for the international conference on Indigenous languages in Victoria.

Hundreds of delegates from more than 20 countries gathered in Victoria Tuesday for the largest-ever Indigenous languages conference.

Among those present were people with knowledge of 33 of B.C.’s Indigenous languages.

According to the First Peoples’ Cultural Council, three per cent of First Nations people in B.C. consider themselves fluent in their ancestral language.

The conference is taking place during a special year. Earlier this year, the United Nations declared 2019 the year of Indigenous languages.

Earlier this month, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls released its final report. One of the calls for justice was for Indigenous languages to become officials languages of Canada.

“They are the languages that come from this land,” said Tracey Herbert, CEO of First Peoples’ Cultural Council. “They originate from this land and they’ve been here for 10,000 years and there’s a lot of history and heritage that are connected to the languages that come from this land.”

Giselle Marie Martin, who has been learning Tla-o-qui-aht for about ten years, was one of the attendees.

“It’s something we have to carry, it’s a lot of work,” she said. “But that’s the same as our territory. We don’t just land in the wilderness and it’s a playground. It’s our home. It’s our spiritual place and we have to take care of it the same way as we have to take care of our languages.”

Eleanor Nooski, a Dakelh learner, says a gap in Dakelh knowledge has been the result of colonization and residential schools.

She aims to become a fluent speaker within five years.

“It’s a beautiful language and all our language is land-based,” she said. “Everything is connected to the land, so if we preserve our language, it’ll protect our land.”

  • David Hogg: I’ve Been The Target Of 7 ‘Assassination Attempts’ | Daily Wire

David Hogg: I’ve Been The Target Of 7 ‘Assassination Attempts’ | Daily Wire

Gun control advocate and Parkland school shooting survivor David Hogg said in an interview published Tuesday that he has been the target of seven “assassination attempts” in the last year and warned that killing him would essentially make him a martyr, only galvanizing his cause.

“Honestly, I realize that it’s horrible that I have to live through this, and it is traumatizing,” Hogg told The Washington Post of the alleged death threats. “But you eventually become desensitized to it.”

The activist claimed that assassinating him would be “the stupidest thing they could do to try to end the movement. … Because that would make it even more successful in the end. Because it would invigorate us and create f***ing change.”

According to The Hill, after Hogg claimed he was target of a stunning seven attempts on his life, The Washington Post did “not [ask] for further details about the threats.”

On February 14, 2018, a gunman entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and killed 17 innocents, 14 of whom were students. Hogg and other classmates who survived the attack, such as Emma González and Cameron Kasky, were quickly thrown into the spotlight to be become prominent anti-gun rights activists (though Kasky has since tempered his views).

Hogg, who is arguably the most visible activist to emerge from the tragic shooting, routinely slanders the National Rifle Association and gun rights supporters.

“Honestly, it’s disgusting. [The NRA acts] like they don’t own these politicians, but they do,” Hogg told host ABC’s “This Week” host George Stephanopoulos just 11 days out from the shooting, in comments reported by HuffPost. “They’ve gotten gun legislation passed before in their favor, in favor of gun manufacturers. … The NRA is an organization that’s completely broken.”

“Listen to Dana,” Hogg said of NRA spokeswomen Dana Loesch. “Is she really speaking to you guys, is she trying to fight for you guys? Or is she actually trying to fight for the gun lobby? Everything she’s saying seems like spectacle. Is it just her tone? Or is it what she’s actually saying?”

“Dana is serving the gun manufacturers,” the teen claimed. “She’s not serving the people of the NRA, because the people that are joining the NRA, 99.9 percent of them are amazing people that just want to be safe, responsible gun owners. And I fully can support that.”

In March of 2018, Hogg said we were living under a “dictatorship” of the NRA.

”These lobbyist groups like the NRA, they can buy our politicians but they can’t buy our voices as American citizens and we need to realize that because when we don’t, we don’t have a democracy, we have a dictatorship,” the teen said, as previously reported by The Daily Wire.

David Hogg says the NRA is making America a dictatorship: “These lobbyist groups like the NRA, they can buy our politicians but they can’t buy our voices as American citizens and we need to realize that because when we don’t, we don’t have a democracy, we have a dictatorship.” pic.twitter.com/nEoUZGhjSU

    — Ryan Saavedra (@RealSaavedra)

In the same sit-down interview, Hogg seemed to shift blame for the murderous Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting to Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and politicians like him.

David Hogg says it’s not a “Democrat” or “Republican” issue as he downplays the importance of how the local police, FBI, and school officials failed and claims Marco Rubio is responsible for all of them. pic.twitter.com/bBD6Um03MZ

    — Ryan Saavedra (@RealSaavedra)

After taking a year off, Hogg is heading in the fall to Harvard — which just rescinded the acceptance of Hogg’s fellow Parkland shooting survivor, outspoken conservative Kyle Kashuv.

While the North Taurid Meteor Shower isn’t the most productive meteor shower of the year, it can produce some of the year’s biggest and brightest meteors.

Also known as ‘fireballs,’ these meteors are associated with the Comet Enckeet, and often appear enormous in the night sky. In fact, Severe Weather Europe notes that the fireball-meteors appeared as big as the moon in the night sky in 2015.

The Beta Taurids Meteor Shower started on June 5 and runs through July 18 – they peak around June 28 – 29. Later this year, the North Taurid meteor shower takes place in the evenings on Nov. 11 – 12 in the northern hemisphere; the South Taurid takes place Oct. 9 – 10 in the southern hemisphere.

According to Space.com, stargazers can spot the origin of the meteors by locating the constellation of Taurus the Bull. In order to find Taurus, viewers should look for the, “constellation Orion and then peer to the northeast to find the red star Aldebaran, the star in the bull’s eye.” However, the shooting stars will appear across the night sky.

Meteor showers take place when the earth moves through debris left behind by comets and asteroids. Space.com notes that Comet Enckeet leaves crumbs in its wake as it orbits the sun. When Jupiter’s orbit brings it close to the comet’s trail, “the gas giant’s gravity nudges the comet particle stream toward Earth, so more meteors are visible to observers here. Astronomers call this an “outburst.”

What’s more, meteor experts predict that one of these productive “outbursts” will take place this year.

Stargazers should opt to travel as far away from city lights as possible in order to avoid light pollution that will obscure the clarity of heavenly bodies. While this works best in more remote places, anywhere that has a higher elevation will also provide more ideal viewing conditions.

Jordyn Woods Launches BooHoo Line, Doing Fine Without Kardashians | TMZ.com

Jordyn Woods ain’t playing the crying game after being excommunicated by the Kardashians — it’s the opposite actually … despite what her new fashion brand might suggest.

Kylie‘s former BFF launched a new clothing line Tuesday in partnership with online retailer BooHoo. Seems she’s the face of the line … at least that’s what we get after watching the video she posted of herself rockin’ some of its gear … all the while flaunting her curves for the cam.

    View this post on Instagram

A post shared by HEIR JORDYN (@jordynwoods) on

It’s interesting … the BooHoo line looks similar to stuff the Kardashians have worn and sold from their own fashion empire. Seems Jordyn’s ripped a page right out of their biz book and is keeping it going for herself … how ’bout that?!

There’s also this — Kim K suggested on the latest ‘KUWTK’ episode that Jordyn’s only been able to provide for her own family through what Kylie has “given” her with respect to jobs and other opportunities.

Whatever the case, Jordyn obviously has been doing just fine without the Kardashians … and appears to only be moving up in her own lane one new deal at a time. Good for her.
