NASA Warns Iceberg Twice The Size Of New York City About To Break Off Of Antarctica

NASA announced on Sunday that an iceberg twice the size of New York City is about to break off of Antarctica’s Brunt Ice Shelf, making it the largest to break off the ice shelf in years.

“Cracks growing across Antarctica’s Brunt Ice Shelf are poised to release an iceberg with an area about twice the size of New York City,” NASA said in a statement. “It is not yet clear how the remaining ice shelf will respond following the break, posing an uncertain future for scientific infrastructure and a human presence on the shelf that was first established in 1955.”

Cracking across Antarctica’s Brunt Ice Shelf is set to release an iceberg w/ an area about 2x the size of NYC. The splitting could result in an uncertain future for the shelf’s scientific research & human presence.

    — NASA (@NASA) February 24, 2019

“The cracks are apparent by comparing these images acquired with Landsat satellites,” NASA explained. “The Thematic Mapper (TM) on Landsat 5 obtained the first image (left) on January 30, 1986. The second image (right), from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8, shows the same area on January 23, 2019.”

The crack along the top of the January 23 image—the so-called Halloween crack—first appeared in late October 2016 and continues to grow eastward from an area known as the McDonald Ice Rumples. The rumbles are due to the way ice flows over an underwater formation, where the bedrock rises high enough to reach into the underside of the ice shelf. This rocky formation impedes the flow of ice and causes pressure waves, crevasses, and rifts to form at the surface.

The more immediate concern is the rift visible in the center of the image. Previously stable for about 35 years, this crack recently started accelerating northward as fast as 4 kilometers per year.

    January 23, 2019

The detailed view shows this northward expanding rift coming within a few kilometers of the McDonald Ice Rumples and the Halloween crack. When it cuts all the way across, the area of ice lost from the shelf will likely be at least 1700 square kilometers (660 square miles). That’s not a terribly large iceberg by Antarctic standards—probably not even making the top 20 list. But it may be the largest berg to break from the Brunt Ice Shelf since observations began in 1915. Scientists are watching to see if the loss will trigger the shelf to further change and possibly become unstable or break up.

Joe MacGregor, a glaciologist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said in the statement that the “near-term future” of the ice shelf “likely depends on where the existing rifts merge relative to the McDonald Ice Rumples,” another area on the ice shelf.— NASA Earth (@NASAEarth) February 21, 2019

“If they merge upstream (south) of the McDonald Ice Rumples, then it’s possible that the ice shelf will be destabilized,” MacGregor added.

NASA announced on Sunday that an iceberg twice the size of New York City is about to break off of Antarctica’s Brunt Ice Shelf, making it the largest to break off the ice shelf in years.

A Tip: The productivity of a small garden also improves when you utilize vertical space. Using a trellis to provide support to trailing plants and vines always helps.

Best Vegetables to Grow in Pots

    1. Tomatoes

Without a doubt, tomatoes are the most productive vegetables you can grow in pots. Tomatoes need ample sun (five to six hours minimum). The pot size depends on the type of tomatoes you are growing. In containers, growing dwarf varieties of determinate type are better. You should also try cherry tomatoes for higher yield. Click here to learn about the best tomato varieties for containers.

    2. Beans

You can grow them on a trellis near a wall, and within weeks, you will get a green wall of beans running across the trellis. For growing beans, you need a sunny spot, and a pot that is minimum 12 inches deep (the bigger, the better) and a strong trellis-like structure for support. Since beans fix the nitrogen most of the vegetables that require more nitrogen are good to grow underneath them. If you’re growing beans in a very large pot, combine summer savory, kale, or celery with them.

    3. Lettuce

Lettuce grows up quickly, and you will have the opportunity to harvest this leafy green multiple times throughout the growing season. As lettuce is a cool season crop, you’ll have to decide what is the right time for its growth according to your climate. Usually, seeds are started in spring. But if you live in a warm climate, grow lettuce in winter.

For growing lettuce, choose a wide planter rather than deep (six inches deep is fine). When planting, make sure to leave space of at least four inches between each plant. Remember, leaf lettuces can be grown more closely than head lettuces. Use well draining soil and do shallow and frequent watering to keep the soil slightly moist always. Must check out our lettuce growing guide to learn more.

    4. Peppers and Chillies

Peppers and chilies are super productive and excellent candidates for growing in containers. They look great in pots and need a sunny and warm place to thrive. If you keep the pot in a sunny spot and provide right soil and fertilize the plant time to time, it will fruit heavily. A large pot that is at least 12 inches deep is optimum.

    5. Radishes

Radishes are one of the quickest growing vegetables and suitable for container vegetable gardening as you can also grow them in small and wide pots. A planter that is just 6 inches deep is enough but if you want to grow larger varieties use 8-10 inches deep pot. Allow 3 inches of space between each plant.

    6. Asian Greens

Asian greens are great crops to grow in pots as they grow fast and don’t need a lot of sunlight. You can grow them in part shade, in a spot that receives at least 4 hours of morning sun. Providing them plenty of moisture and organic fertilizer is important so that they thrive.

    7. Spinach

Spinach is one of the best vegetables for containers. It grows well in partial shade and any kind of space. • Oscars 2019: Jennifer Lopez Wears Sexy Tom Ford Dress

Oscars 2019: Jennifer Lopez Wears Sexy Tom Ford Dress

It wouldn’t be a red carpet without a dose of Jennifer Lopez‘s head-turning style.

Just two weeks after her viral fashion moment at the Grammys on Feb. 10 (that hat!), the 49-year-old superstar made another major high-fashion statement at the 2019 Academy Awards, and her Instagram boyfriend Alex Rodriguez was right by her side to celebrate (and document) her major moment.

Lopez, who is presenting at the ceremony, always balances the skin-baring with the style-setting. And this time she didn’t disappoint in a second skin mirror mosaic long-sleeve Tom Ford gown worn with equally dazzling jewelry. The gown is so reflective it throws off sparkles on everything around her as she walks, as hairstylist Chris Appleton documented.

Rodriguez, 43, also wore Tom Ford, selecting an ivory cocktail jacket with grosgrain peak lapel. For his first Oscars, he put some of his possible outfit options to a poll on his Instagram stories, asking fans to vote on whether he should wear a white or black jacket, low top or high top shoes and one of two watches.

Lopez posted several throwback photos of her previous Oscar moments and a sexy behind-the-scenes photo of her prep for the big show.

Since Lopez and Rodriguez first began dating two years ago, the couple has become the red carpet duo to watch. And Rodriguez even admitted he loves to take behind-the-scenes photos of his leading lady’s looks.

“My job is to be the cameraman!” Rodriguez said at the Grammys.

And if his camera skills weren’t enough, Rodriguez is also a true romantic. On their two year anniversary, he took to Instagram to post a special tribute to Lopez.

  • Sick of Searching for Lids for Your Plastic Containers? These Containers Zip Shut

Sick of Searching for Lids for Your Plastic Containers? These Containers Zip Shut

Half the battle of cleaning up after dinner is trying to find a plastic container and the right lid to hold your leftovers. Like a modern-day Goldilocks dilemma, it seems that the lid is always too big—or too small—for the container you want to use. Houseware and handbag brand Finell may have found a solution, though. The company’s Zip Top containers combine the best features of a plastic container and zippable plastic baggie while eliminating the hassles associated with both.

Zip Top containers stand upright like a typical plastic container, but they’re a lot more malleable, letting you squeeze them into tight spots in your fridge. And unlike other storage containers, they have a zippable top, so you’ll never have to tear apart your kitchen looking for another lid. (Another helpful feature: The container’s pointed “pour corners,” so you won’t make a mess trying to transfer soup or sauce to a bowl.)

Another selling point is its versatility, they’re safe for the dishwasher, microwave, oven, and freezer. You can even use them as sous vide, with some modifications. “Zip Top containers are thicker than most commercial sous vide bags, so you may need to increase the temperature slightly to compensate,” the company notes.

They’re also said to be “virtually indestructible,” so you can use them as many times as you’d like—all while helping the environment. By some estimates, traditional plastic bags may take 500 years to break down in a landfill. According to Finell, one Zip Top can save 5000 plastic bags.

  • 9 Inspirational Stories of Famous People Who Will Encourage You to Never Give Up

9 Inspirational Stories of Famous People Who Will Encourage You to Never Give Up

“Never give up.” It’s probably one of the most cliché phrases you’ll hear as you’re building your career. But there’s a reason these sayings are clichés—you never know when success really does lie around the next corner.

We know believing that is easier said than done, so we collected the following stories of famous celebrities who definitely never gave up, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Stephen King, and J.K. Rowling, for starters.

All these folks are now household names, but they didn’t become one easily. Some lived in their car, others suffered family abuse, and almost all encountered rejection after rejection professionally and personally—before finally landing a foot in the door. Read on and get inspired!

    1. J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling had just gotten a divorce, was on government aid, and could barely afford to feed her baby in 1994, just three years before the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, was published.
When she was shopping it out, she was so poor she couldn’t afford a computer or even the cost of photocopying the 90,000-word novel, so she manually typed out each version to send to publishers. It was rejected dozens of times until finally Bloomsbury, a small London publisher, gave it a second chance after the CEO’s eight year-old daughter fell in love with it.

    2. Stephen King

King was broke and struggling when he was first trying to write. He lived in a trailer with his wife—also a writer—and they both worked multiple jobs to support their family while pursuing their craft. They were so poor they had to borrow clothes for their wedding and had gotten rid of the telephone because it was too expensive.

King received so many rejection letters for his works that he developed a system for collecting them. In his book On Writing, he recalls: “By the time I was 14…the nail in my wall would no longer support the weight of the rejection slips impaled upon it. I replaced the nail with a spike and kept on writing.” He received 60 rejections before selling his first short story, “The Glass Floor,” for $35. Even his now best-selling book, Carrie, wasn’t a hit at first.

After dozens of rejections, he finally sold it for a meager advance to Doubleday Publishing, where the hardback sold only 13,000 copies—not great. Soon after, though, Signet Books signed on for the paperback rights for $400,000, $200,000 of which went to King. Success achieved!

    3. Jim Carrey

When Carrey was 14 years old, his father lost his job, and his family hit rough times. They moved into a VW van on a relative’s lawn, and the young aspiring comedian—who was so dedicated to his craft that he mailed his resume to The Carroll Burnett Show just a few years earlier, at age 10—took an eight-hours-per-day factory job after school to help make ends meet.

At age 15, Carrey performed his comedy routine onstage for the first time—in a suit his mom made him—and totally bombed, but he was undeterred. The next year, at 16, he quit school to focus on comedy full time. He moved to LA shortly after, where he would park on Mulholland Drive every night and visualize his success.

One of these nights he wrote himself a check for $10,000,000 for “Acting Services Rendered,” which he dated for Thanksgiving 1995. Just before that date, he hit his payday with Dumb and Dumber. He put the deteriorated check, which he’d kept in his wallet the whole time, in his father’s casket.

    4. Tyler Perry

Perry had a rough childhood. He was physically and sexually abused growing up, got kicked out of high school, and tried to commit suicide twice—once as a preteen and again at 22. At 23 he moved to Atlanta and took up odd jobs as he started working on his stage career.

In 1992 he wrote, produced, and starred in his first theater production, I Know I’ve Been Changed, somewhat informed by his difficult upbringing. Perry put all his savings into the show and it failed miserably; the run lasted just one weekend and only 30 people came to watch. He kept up with the production, working more odd jobs and often slept in his car to get by.

Six years later, Perry finally broke through when, on its seventh run, the show became a success. He’s since gone on to have an extremely successful career as a director, writer, and actor. In fact, Perry was named Forbes’ highest paid man in entertainment in 2011.

    5. Sarah Jessica Parker

Parker was born in a poor coal-mining town in rural Ohio, the youngest of four children. Her parents divorced when she was two, and her mother remarried shortly thereafter and had an additional four children. Parker’s stepfather, a truck driver, was often out of work, so the future starlet took up singing and dancing at a very young age to help supplement her mom’s teaching income and feed their 10-person family.

Despite hard times and occasionally being on welfare, Parker’s mom continued to encourage her children’s interest in the arts. The family moved to Cincinnati, where Parker was enrolled in a ballet, music, and theater school on scholarship.

When she was 11 years old, the family took a trip to New York City so Parker could audition for a Broadway play. The trip was a success—she and her brother were both cast, and the family relocated to New York. Parker continued to work hard and land roles, eventually becoming the title character of TV juggernaut Sex and the City.

    6. Colonel (Harland) Sanders

Colonel Harland Sanders was fired from a variety of jobs throughout his career before he first started cooking chicken in his roadside Shell Service Station in 1930, when he was 40 years old, during the Great Depression. His gas station didn’t actually have a restaurant, so he served diners in his attached personal living quarters.

Over the next 10 years, he perfected his “Secret Recipe” and pressure fryer cooking method for his famous fried chicken and moved onto bigger locations. His chicken was even praised in the media by food critic Duncan Hines (yes, that Duncan Hines). However, as the interstate came through the Kentucky town where the Colonel’s restaurant was located in the 1950s, it took away important road traffic, and the Colonel was forced to close his business and retire, essentially broke.

Worried about how he was going to survive off his meager $105 monthly pension check, he set out to find restaurants who would franchise his secret recipe—he wanted a nickel for each piece of chicken sold. He drove around, sleeping in his car, and was rejected more than 1,000 times before finally finding his first partner.

    7. Shania Twain

Twain’s career actually began more out of necessity than raw ambition. Her parents divorced when she was two, and she rarely saw her father. Her mom and stepfather, to whom she grew close, often couldn’t make enough to get by, so Twain started singing in bars to make extra money when she was just eight years old.

She recalls her mother waking her up at all hours to get up and perform. Sadly, when she was 21, her mother and stepfather were killed in a head-on car accident with a logging truck on the highway. Twain put her career on hold to step in and take care of her three younger siblings (who were in their teens at the time).

She sang in resorts and put off going after big-time stardom until her sister and brothers were old enough to care for themselves. Only once her youngest brother graduated high school did she feel OK heading down to Nashville to pursue her career.

    8. Emily Blunt

Before Blunt was getting nominated for Golden Globes and landing leading roles on the stage and big screen, she could barely carry a conversation with her classmates: Between ages seven and 14, Emily had a major stutter. As she told W magazine, “I was a smart kid, and had a lot to say, but I just couldn’t say it. It would just haunt me. I never thought I’d be able to sit and talk to someone like I’m talking to you right now.”

But that all changed when one of her junior high teachers encouraged her to try out for the school play—a totally unappealing feat given the fact that she had such a hard time communicating. But the teacher kept gently pressing and suggested she try accents and character voices to help get the words out—and it worked. By the end of her teens, Blunt had overcome her stutter and went on to achieve the successful career she has now.

    9. Oprah Winfrey

Oprah’s dealt with a lot throughout her public life—criticism about her weight, racism, intrusive questions about her sexuality, just to name a few—but she never let it get in the way of her ambition and drive. When you look at her childhood, her personal triumphs are cast in an even more remarkable light.

Growing up, Oprah was reportedly a victim of sexual abuse and was repeatedly molested by her cousin, an uncle, and a family friend. Later, she became pregnant and gave birth to a child at age 14, who passed away just two weeks later.

But Oprah persevered, going on to finish high school as an honors student, earning a full scholarship to college, and working her way up through the ranks of television, from a local network anchor in Nashville to an international superstar and creator of her OWN network (we couldn’t help ourselves).

  • 11-Year-Old Genius Out to Prove Stephen Hawking Wrong After His Death: “God Does Exist”

11-Year-Old Genius Out to Prove Stephen Hawking Wrong After His Death: “God Does Exist”

William Maillis is not your typical 11-year-old.

At an age when most kids are focused on beating the next level in a video game, or working toward actually hitting the ball in their baseball game on Saturday, William is consumed with becoming an astrophysicist.

Most kids dream of becoming a firefighter, a doctor, maybe an astronaut or a teacher, but William isn’t just dreaming of becoming an astrophysicist, he’s already becoming one.

The boy from Pennsylvania, graduated high school in May of 2016, at the age of 9. After attending community college classes, he enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University last fall.

According to his father, Peter Maillis, William began speaking in full sentences at just seven months old. He was doing addition at 21 months, and multiplication by the age of two — a time when he was also reading children’s books, and writing his own nine-page book, “Happy Cat.” At four years old, he was learning algebra, sign language and how to read Greek, and when he was five, he read an entire 209-page geometry textbook in one night and woke up solving circumference problems the next morning.

This kid is literally a GENIUS and has been declared one by Ohio State University psychologist, Joanne Ruthsatz.

William’s desire to become an astrophysicist is rooted in his strong faith beliefs. He disagrees with some of Einstein and Hawking’s theories on black holes and has his own ideas to prove the existence of the universe.

The son of a Greek Orthodox Priest, William wants to prove that an outside force is the only thing capable of creating the universe, which means that “God does exist.”

Stephen Hawking, however, who passed away today at the age of 76, held a much different assertion. “Before we understood science, it was natural to believe that God created the universe, but now science offers a more convincing explanation,” once said the renowned physicist. “What I meant by ‘we would know the mind of God’ is we would know everything that God would know if there was a God, but there isn’t. I’m an atheist.”

William’s parents say they have never pushed him toward his studies or this God-proving endeavor, but rather that he’s a pretty “normal” 11-year-old.

“We’re normal people,” Peter explained. “And he’s a normal kid. You can’t distinguish him from other 11-year-olds. He likes sports, television shows, the computer and video games like everyone else.”

But still, distinct from other kids his age, William’s ultimate life passion is perfectly clear. When asked what his “dream” is, the child prodigy had no hesitation in his response.

“I want to be an astrophysicist so that I can prove to the scientific world that God does exist,” William said in a recent interview with Hellenic College Holy Cross.

When asked why he felt the need to prove it to scientists, his answer was even more profound:

“Well because there are these atheists that try to say that there is no God when in reality it takes more faith to believe that there’s no God than it does to believe that there is a God… Because it makes more sense that something created the universe than that the universe created itself. It takes more faith to say the universe created itself than to say something others created the universe because that is more logical.”

Well I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty pumped to see this “normal,” God-fearing boy unravel the theory of one of the most prolific scientific minds of all time — for as stated by the great scientist Matthew Maury, “The Bible is true and science is true, and therefore each, if truly read, but proves the truth of the other.”

However, Cooper probably won’t see a dime of that fortune, as his mother told him ever since he was a child. But Cooper is not bothered at all, as he makes $11 million a year at CNN.

    #8. Stella McCartney

    Photo: Courtesy of Wired UK

Stella McCartney has amassed a net worth of $75 million as a very successful fashion designer. But, even if he hadn’t, she’d still be living an extremely luxurious life as the daughter of Sir Paul McCartney.

Those $200 million, however, didn’t make a big impact on her life, since she grew up in a very wealthy family. Her great-grandfather, Leopold Louis-Dreyfus, founded the Louis-Dreyfus Group, which made the family incredibly rich.

    #5. Nicole Richie

    Photo: Courtesy of US Weekly

We all know Nicole Richie is the heiress of a big fortune because, well, that’s what made her famous. The infamous spoiled girl rose to fame along Paris Hilton, starring in The Simple Life, a show where the girls attempted to live like normal people.

Chevy Chase rose to prominence as a member of Saturday Night Live in the 1970’s and starred in several memorable comedies such as Caddyschack and Fletch. However, he could’ve enjoyed a comfortable life and lived off his inheritance.

Both of his parents came from very wealthy families. His father was a magazine writer and book editor, while his mother was not only a very accomplished Opera singer but also was adopted by Cornelius Vanderbilt Crane, the heir to the Crane Company.

    #3. Kate and Rooney Mara

Sisters Kate and Rooney Mara both became A-listers in Hollywood. Rooney had her breakout role in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, while Kate appeared in many memorable films, like Brokeback Mountain and We Are Marshall.

The sisters come from one of the most prominent families in the NFL. They’re the great-granddaughters of both Art  Rooney, founder of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Tim Mara, founder of the New York Giants, so they will most likely inherit a huge fortune.

    #2. Paris Hilton

It is no surprise that Paris Hilton made it to our list. She did make an empire on her own, through several business ventures, a singing career, modeling, and reality TV, but she stepped into the spotlight as the spoiled heiress of Hilton Hotels.

Her great-grandfather, Conrad Hilton, founded Hilton Hotels, which is worth $2.3 billion. However, her once $60 million inheritance was pledged to charity, as her grandfather, Barron Hilton, believes she sullied the family name.

    #1. Ivanka Trump

Photo: Courtesy of Faro di Roma

Ivanka Trump was in the spotlight since the day she was born as the daughter of none other than Donald Trump, who was also born rich. However, she also made a lot of money as a businesswoman,  with a net worth of $300 million.

And, she’ll be even richer in the future because she’ll receive her share from her father’s worth, which is about $3.1 billion to be split between Ivanka and her four siblings.

We all love the typical  “from rags to riches” story of celebs like Oprah Winfrey, who eventually overcame poverty, only to become filthy rich.  However, there are many celebs out there that were simply born rich, and will probably get even richer once they inherit their families’ millions.

The weekly expiry on the benchmark indices shows the market trend. The swings around the weekly expiry determine the strength and weakness of various stocks.

JSW Steel: The stock has witnessed a rise in OI from an average of 5 lakhs to 7 lakhs. The stock rose 3.72 percent to end at Rs 277.15 in futures. The overall data reveals Rs 260 –Rs 280 to be the trading range. A further rise and if stock conquers Rs 280 levels, then a fresh rally towards Rs 295 and Rs 301 cannot be ruled out. The overall data suggest long build up with an uptrend view.

Jubliant Foodworks: The previous three sessions witnessed a fall in OI from 29 lakhs to 27 lakhs, however; price did not predict any specific trend. A cut of approximately 4 percent with stock retracing towards previous low of Rs 1,275 indicates a weak trend. If broken then may head towards Rs 1,240 levels.

Oil India: The stock surged from Rs 170 to Rs 178 till the previous session, without a convincing rise in OI. Yesterday, the jump of 1.50 percent to Rs 180 level added 21 percent OI to 7 lakhs. A significant rise in OI with a strong price rise indicates bullish sentiment. The scenario depicts long positions build up with a positive view. 2019’s Most Sinful States in America

Red states and blue states may like to point to one another as the source of all that is wrong with the U.S., but the truth is that each of the 50 states has its own virtues and vices. For example, Missouri has the worst drug use problem. And it certainly comes as no surprise that Nevada is the most gambling-addicted.

But the cost of state sins is something we have to share as a nation. Gambling alone costs the U.S. about $5 billion per year. That’s nothing compared to the amount of money we lose from smoking, though – over $300 billion per year. Harmful behavior on the individual level can add up to staggering economic costs on a national scale.

Some states are more well-behaved than others. In order to determine the states that most give in to their desires, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 43 key indicators of immorality. Our data set ranges from violent crimes per capita to excessive drinking to share of the population with gambling disorders. Read on to see the full ranking, insight from a panel of experts, and a full description of our methodology.

With Mardi Gas approaching and Louisiana set to be the center of plenty of drinking, drug use, and sex, WalletHub has also prepared a Mardi Gras Facts – Booze, Floats, Money & More infographic to go along with this report.

  • Labor Market Crisis: Wages Not Rising With Inflation

Labor Market Crisis: Wages Not Rising With Inflation

As we reported last week, a record 7 million Americans have fallen 90 days or more behind on their auto loan payments.

That’s 1 million more than the previous peak in auto loan delinquencies in 2010. But as Wolf Street points out, there is a big difference between then and now.

“Serious auto-loan delinquencies are now on par with Q2 2009 when millions of people had lost their jobs and when the economy was in free-fall. But today unemployment is low and the economy appears to be humming. What gives? “

Currently, there is about $1.3 trillion in auto loans outstanding. Looking at auto loan delinquencies in terms of a percentage of the total outstanding, the number hit 4.5% at the end of 2018. This is the same percentage as in the second quarter of 2009 as the economy was feeling the full effect of the 2008 crash.

Wolf Richter of Wolf Street highlighted some of the reasons for the surge in auto loan delinquencies in a recent episode of the Wolf Street Report.

In the first place, a lot of Americans are struggling with their jobs.

“While the unemployment rate is at around 4% and has been as low as 3.7%, there are many pockets of weakness in the labor market. A lot of people have gig work. A lot of people are underpaid. Their wages have not gone up with inflation. People have been discouraged and they’re not participating in the labor force anymore, and so they don’t show up in unemployment figures. So, there are many weaknesses in this labor market.”

Even so, Richter said it’s still the “cleanest dirty shirt of the labor market” we’ve had in a number of years, so the labor market itself cannot completely explain the surge in auto loan delinquencies.

A second issue is the rapidly rising cost of new cars. The average price of a new vehicle is now around $36,000. This represents a significant increase in the cost of vehicles and there has not been a corresponding rise in wages. Subprime borrowers face a double whammy. They not only have to pay the higher price; they also get hit with a higher interest rate.

A third, and according to Richter probably the most significant issue, is the number of subprime lenders who have plowed into the auto business over the last 10 years. This is an extremely profitable business for the lender, but an extremely risky position for the borrower.

“These are precisely the kind of customers who can’t afford those payments, and cannot afford to make those payments based on high-interest rates, and they can’t even afford that expensive of a car.”

The auto business actually looks a lot like the subprime housing market we saw blow up in the years leading up to the 2008 crash. These companies make risky loans. They use sloppy underwriting techniques. And then they package the loans together in auto loan-backed securities and sell them.

By 2018, the air was coming out of the auto bubble. A number of these specialized subprime auto lenders had already collapsed. Richter said now we’re starting to see many of these companies curtail their lending.

Of course, it’s not just specialized companies making subprime loans. According to Richter, about 25% of the auto loans on the books of big banks are subprime. Credit unions have also gotten into the business.

The big difference between the subprime auto loan market today and the subprime housing market in the years before the crash is one of scale. A collapse in the subprime auto market will cause some pain, but it won’t likely bring down financial institutions.
