Bookstore Removes Jordan Peterson Book Over Mosque Shooting, Continues Selling ‘Mein Kampf’

A New Zealand bookstore stopped selling Jordan Peterson’s book in light of the Christchurch mosque shootings, but continues offering “Mein Kampf.”

Management at Whitcoulls, one of the largest bookstores in New Zealand, said it would be wrong to support Peterson by selling “12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos” in light of “some extremely disturbing material being circulated prior, during and after the Christchurch attack,” according to an apparent customer service email, likely referencing a photograph in which Peterson embraced a fan wearing an “I’m A Proud Islamaphobe” T-shirt.

The store, however, continues to offer Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” and Albert Cooper’s “Why Islamic Society Is Not Compatible With American Society,” according to its website.

Peterson, a clinical psychologist, and professor of psychology at the University of Toronto advocates self-improvement and has not promoted bigotry in his writings or lectures. The book in question only makes one reference to Muslims, which is not derogatory.

ACT Party leader David Seymour criticized Whitcoull’s decision to remove Peterson’s book, saying restricting books was an ineffective way to combat neo-Nazism.

“You don’t fight neo-Nazism by suppressing reading and books. Anyone who knows any history knows that’s the opposite of how you fight these kinds of ideas,” Seymour told Newshub.

“A self-help book is an incredibly strange thing to suppress. I think Whitcoulls have made the wrong decision, but I respect they’re a private company, it’s their right.”

Whitcoulls did not respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment by the time of publication.

  • Judge to be assigned to Jussie Smollett’s case at hearing

Judge to be assigned to Jussie Smollett’s case at hearing

     – “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett is expected to plead not guilty Thursday to charges accusing him of lying to the police about being the victim of a racist and homophobic attack in downtown Chicago a few weeks ago.

The hearing in Cook County Circuit Court began with Judge Steven Watkins being assigned to oversee the case, including the trial if it reaches that point.

Prosecutors allege that Smollett, who is black and gay and plays the gay character Jamal Lyon on the hit Fox TV show, hired two friends to help him stage the attack on him in downtown Chicago early on the morning of Jan. 29. They say Smollett was unhappy about his salary and wanted to drum up publicity to help his career.

Smollett has denied that he staged the attack and maintains he is innocent. His attorneys have called the charges against him “prosecutorial overkill.”

There were several supporters outside the courthouse doors as Smollett arrived for the hearing, including some who waved signs. Activist Wisdom Cole led a few chants in support of the actor, the black community and the LGBT community.

“Jussie has been a person of high caliber and character. He comes from an activist family. He has a consistent track record and history of supporting marginalized people … and so his track record is not on par with the idea of a hoax,” she said.

  • TV stars and coaches charged in college bribery scheme

TV stars and coaches charged in college bribery scheme

BOSTON (AP) — Fifty people, including Hollywood stars Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, were charged Tuesday in a scheme in which wealthy parents allegedly bribed college coaches and other insiders to get their children into some of the nation’s most elite schools.

Federal authorities called it the biggest college admissions scam ever prosecuted by the U.S. Justice Department, with the parents accused of paying an estimated $25 million in bribes.

“These parents are a catalog of wealth and privilege,” U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling said in announcing the results of an investigation code-named Operation Varsity Blues.

The scandal is certain to inflame longstanding complaints that children of the wealthy and well-connected have the inside track in college admissions — sometimes through big, timely donations from their parents — and that privilege begets privilege.

At least nine athletic coaches and 33 parents, many of them prominent in law, finance or business, were among those charged. Dozens, including Huffman, were arrested by midday.

The coaches worked at such schools as Yale, Stanford, Georgetown, Wake Forest, the University of Texas, the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles. A former Yale soccer coach pleaded guilty and helped build the case against others.

Prosecutors said parents paid an admissions consultant from 2011 through last month to bribe coaches and administrators to falsely make their children look like star athletes to boost their chances of getting into college. The consultant also hired ringers to take college entrance exams for students, and paid off insiders at testing centers to alter students’ scores.

Parents spent anywhere from $200,000 to $6.5 million to guarantee their children’s admission, officials said.

“For every student admitted through fraud, an honest and genuinely talented student was rejected,” Lelling said.

Several defendants, including Huffman, were charged with conspiracy to commit fraud, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Lelling said the investigation is continuing and authorities believe other parents were involved. The schools themselves are not targets of the investigation, he said.

No students were charged. Authorities said in many cases the teenagers were not aware of what was going on.

The investigation began when authorities received a tip about the admissions scheme from someone they were interviewing in a separate case, Lelling said. He did not elaborate.

Authorities said coaches in such sports as soccer, sailing, tennis, water polo and volleyball accepted bribes to put students on lists of recruited athletes, regardless of their ability or experience. That, in turn, improved their chances of admission.

Prosecutors said parents were also instructed to claim their children had learning disabilities so that they could take the ACT or SAT by themselves, with extended time. That made it easier to pull off the tampering, prosecutors said.

Among the parents charged were Gordon Caplan of Greenwich, Connecticut, a co-chairman of an international law firm based in New York; Jane Buckingham, CEO of a boutique marketing company in Los Angeles; Gregory Abbott of New York, founder and chairman of a packaging company; and Manuel Henriquez, CEO of a finance company based in Palo Alto, California.

Caplan was accused of paying $75,000 to get a test supervisor to correct the answers on her daughter’s ACT exam after she took it. In a conversation last June with a cooperating witness, he was told his daughter needed “to be stupid” when a psychologist evaluated her for learning disabilities in order to get more time for the exam, according to court papers.

“It’s the home run of home runs,” the witness said.

    “And it works?” Caplan asked.

“Every time,” the witness responded, prompting laughter from both.

At one point, Caplan asked if schools were “concerned with this.”

“Schools don’t know. Schools don’t know,” the witness said.

The bribes allegedly were dispensed through an admissions consulting company in Newport Beach, California. Authorities said parents paid William Singer, the founder of the Edge College & Career Network, the bribe money to get their children into college.

Prosecutors said Singer was scheduled to plead guilty in Boston Tuesday to charges including racketeering conspiracy. John Vandemoer, the former head sailing coach at Stanford, was also expected to plead guilty.

Colleges moved quickly to discipline the coaches accused. Stanford fired Vandemoer, UCLA suspended its soccer coach, and Wake Forest did the same with its volleyball coach.

Several schools, including USC and Yale, said they were victims themselves of the scam. USC also said it is reviewing its admissions process to prevent further such abuses.

In one case, a former USC women’s soccer coach and the consultant allegedly worked together in 2017 to help a client’s child get into Yale in exchange for $1.2 million from the family. A false athletic profile created for the student said she played competitive soccer and had been on China’s junior national development team.

The profile was sent to the coach of the Yale women’s soccer team and the student was accepted. Prosecutors said the Yale coach, Rudolph Meredith, received $400,000 from the consulting company after the student was accepted, even though he knew the student did not play competitive soccer.

Loughlin, who was charged along with her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, appeared in the ABC sitcom “Full House,” while Huffman starred in ABC’s “Desperate Housewives.”

Messages seeking comment from Huffman’s representative were not immediately returned. A spokeswoman for Loughlin had no comment.

Loughlin and her husband allegedly gave $500,000 to have their two daughters labeled as recruits to the USC crew team, even though neither participated in the sport. Their 19-year-old daughter Olivia Jade Giannulli, who has a popular YouTube channel, attends USC.

Court documents said Huffman paid $15,000 that she disguised as a charitable donation so that her daughter could take part in the college entrance-exam cheating scam.

Court papers said a cooperating witness met with Huffman and her husband, actor William H. Macy, at their Los Angeles home and explained to them that he “controlled” a testing center and could have somebody secretly change her daughter’s answers. The person told investigators the couple agreed to the plan.

Macy was not charged; authorities did not say why.

Macy told Parade magazine in January that the college application process for their daughter was a source of stress. The couple’s daughter, Sofia, is an aspiring actress who attends Los Angeles High School of the Arts.

“She’s going to go to college. I’m the outlier in this thing. We’re right now in the thick of college application time, which is so stressful,” Macy said.

Justin Bieber asks for fans’ prayers after revealing he’s been ‘struggling a lot’

In an emotional Instagram post, the 25-year-old pop star shared that he’s in midst of the “most human season I’ve ever been in,” adding that he plans to face his challenges “head on.”

“Just wanted to keep you guys updated a little bit hopefully what I’m going through will resonate with you guys,” Bieber captioned a picture of himself praying with manager Scooter Braun and Kanye West. “Been struggling a lot. Just feeling super disconnected and weird.”

The “Love Yourself” singer didn’t exactly detail what challenges he’s facing, but did ask his 105 million followers to “pray for me.”

“God is faithful and our prayers really work,” he wrote, adding that he “always bounce(s) back so I’m not worried.”.

During an interview with Vogue last month, Bieber revealed a darker time in his life, sharing that he got “really depressed” on the tour for his album “Purpose” in 2017. “I haven’t talked about this, and I’m still processing so much stuff that I haven’t talked about,” he shared. “I was lonely. I needed some time.”

Bieber said he relied heavily on Xanax during that period of his life to distance himself from his reality.

“I found myself doing things that I was so ashamed of, being super-promiscuous and stuff, and I think I used Xanax because I was so ashamed,” he shared. “My mom always said to treat women with respect. For me, that was always in my head while I was doing it, so I could never enjoy it. Drugs put a screen between me and what I was doing.”

One of her most buzz-worthy looks has been the Mona Lisa, which she told South China Morning Post took 6 hours to complete.

Even with her obvious talent, the make-up artist has been unsure of how people would react to some of her attempts: “I wasn’t sure how internet users would feel about me trying to copy such a famous and beloved painting onto my face,” she told SCMP of her Mona Lisa face. “I prepared myself for criticism.” The next day she awoke to over 900,000 likes on TikTok, where she had recorded the tutorial.

Looking at the before photo of the vlogger and the after result you may question how a Chinese woman can transform her features so realistically to more Western faces with make-up alone – she says it’s all in the eyes. “The most important facial feature is the eyes, It’s key to whether the copy is successful or not,” which might make it even more surprising to learn that her most difficult look was Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng. “There is only a little room to work in when the subject puts on only light or even no make-up,” she said.“Also, Teresa Teng was from decades ago, when people’s expressions and gestures were different from now. Before starting the job, I spent quite some time researching the way she looked.”

YouTubers have been able to turn the platform into billion-dollar businesses, and beauty vloggers can rake in some serious cash charging some companies more than $60,000 to be featured. • ‘People who know my uncle are furious’ – Michael Jackson’s nephew defends star against sex abuse claims

‘People who know my uncle are furious’ – Michael Jackson’s nephew defends star against sex abuse claims

TAJ JACKSON has come to the defense of his late uncle Michael Jackson in the wake of the child abuse sex allegations made against him in new documentary Leaving Neverland.

The 45-year-old, who is the son of Michael’s older brother Tito Jackson, collaborated with the late singer during his time in the pop group 3T.

And speaking in an interview with BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat, Taj was eager to defend his uncle against accusers James Safechuck and Wade Robson, who claim in Dan Reed’s new film that the singer sexually abused them both after befriending them as children.

The 3T star believes the men, who both previously testified under oath that Michael never touched them in a sexual way during his 2005 child molestation trial, will eventually be exposed as liars. That trial ended with Jackson being acquitted on all charges.

“I think it’s temporary in terms of the stain,” Taj said.

“First of all, I believe the truth will come out. It might take some time. There have been cases when someone has been labeled something and then 10 years later you find out the truth.”

Michael’s nephew added that the accusations made in the film would have left the King of Pop “crying”.

“He would’ve said, ‘No, not Wade, please not Wade’. But it’s happened to him before, people betraying him. People that we thought were stand-up people have stolen from him, have sold stories on him.”

Taj believes James and Wade changed their stories about their relationship with the Thriller singer to get money as they both have lawsuits pending an appeal against the Michael Jackson estate.

“They can say it’s not about money but they are up for appeal and I think if they can get enough backlash or public opinion they’re in a good position,” he said.

Despite the accusations presented in the new film, Taj is confident fans will not be “swayed” by the accounts presented in the “one-sided documentary”, though he remains concerned that “casual people” could turn against the singer.

“I don’t think it’s gonna sway the fans but I think it will sway the casual people and that hurts me because they’re only seeing one side and they’re seeing a one-sided documentary,” he said.

“People who know my uncle are furious right now. I’m talking about ex-employees that got fired from my uncle. They’re still coming to his defense because they know the real Michael Jackson.

“It looks very convincing. The director did an incredible job. I’m a director I see the angles, I see the slow motion, the close-ups, the high angles to make them look vulnerable. It’s brilliant but at the same time that doesn’t mean they’re true.”

Several radio stations have already moved to ban Michael Jackson songs from their playlists but Irish state broadcaster RTE has already confirmed no ban will be implemented on any of its stations.
